Whats Happening in Arcadia?

Arcadia, CAThe Arcadia City Council has taken action for a possible transition to a
district-based voting system to select City Council Members which will replace the current
at-large election system. Several council members were against this change and resisted the
move even when the Chinese-American Equalization Association claimed they would sue if
the council did not establish district elections. Several council members opposed the change,
resisting the move even after the Chinese-American Equalization Association said it would sue
if the council didn't allow district elections. The City received a letter from Malibu lawyer
Kevin Shenkman which stated that the current voting system was not in compliance with the
California Voting Rights Act. He threatened litigation if that demand was not met. Through
Arcadias current system, voters from the entire city choose all five City Council Members.
However, in a district-based election system, the city is divided into different geographic
districts where each one has a City Council Member who resides in that district and is chosen
by voters residing in the district.

About the Arcadia Civic Youth Council

The Arcadia Civic Youth Council, in partnership with Arcadia's Best Foundation, aspires to promote the
understanding of Arcadias extensive history in a non-partisan environment and encourage young adults to
become educated about civic virtues, hence forming virtuous leaders of the future generation. Together, we
hope to provide a positive, synergistic effect on the community.

The Arcadia Civic Youth Council sends volunteers to events hosted by the Arcadia Historical Society, other local
organizations, and the Youth Council itself. By applying civic virtues and by interacting with the community,
members foster an understanding and appreciation of Arcadias history. Additionally, we appoint
representatives of Arcadias youth to attend meetings of, but not limited to, the organizations listed: Arcadia
Historical Society, Arcadia City Council, and Arcadia Rotary.
