Double trouble
crime reduced

Fewer young people commit-
ted crimes together in 2016
compared to a decade ago,
Crime Statistics Agency re-
search shows.
The figures are proving true
in Moorabool, as well.
Two research papers exam-
ined youth crime trends in
Victoria, one detailing young
peoples co-offending pat-
terns, and the other analysing
the seriousness of offences
committed by first-time
young offenders.
The co-offending research
found that 56 per cent of
young offenders (10-17 year
olds) committed at least one
offence with another person
in 2016, down from 63 per cent
Young people were less like-
ly to commit serious assaults
and motor vehicle thefts in
company, and co-offending
for these crimes have both
decreased compared to 2007.
Further research found that
the number of first-time young
offenders committing crimes
against the person remained
stable over time, while the
number recorded for a prop-
erty and deception offence
significantly decreased.

were more likely to co-offend
compared to their adult
counterparts.
More than half (56 per cent)
of all young offenders com-
mitted at least one crime in
the company of others, com-
pared to 30 per cent of offend-
ers aged 18 to 24.
Our research shows that the
crime type most likely to be
committed in company is rob-
bery, Ms Dowsley said.
I think as soon as something
happens then people in the
community can tend to blame
young people for it but thats
not always the case, he said.
Also, the pro-active strate-
gies that Victoria Police have
put in place should take a bit
of credit for that, my own po-
sition as youth resource officer
for one benefits the commu-
nity because Im able to work
more one-on-one with young
people than being reactive, the
figures reflect that pro-active
side of policing and show that
that component does work.

A group of local residents are now
equipped to read and understand the
label on the side of their cereal box.
Important nutritional information
like this was explored by members of
the community at a workshop hosted
last week by Ballan District Health
and Care dietician, Amy Trotter.
The event was held at Ballan IGA in
order to educate people about how to
properly read food labels and in turn,
make informed decisions when gro-
cery shopping.
The small group were made to com-
pare food products and select healthy
choices based on a guide that targeted
the level of energy, saturated fat, trans
fat, sugar, fibre and salt.
The take-home guide also provides
important information on ingredi-
ents lists and nutrition symbols and
claims.
The workshop was the first of many
sessions to be held on a monthly basis.
Those involved are charged $5 each
and meet at Ballan District Health and
Cares community health reception,
164 Inglis Street.
The next workshop will be held on
Thursday September 21, with more
dates to be announced. Bookings are
essential.

with nitrous oxide, which,
when inhaled, can make
people feel euphoric and
relaxed.

Get snapping rubbish

Locals are invited to pull out their
phone cameras and become Litterati
as part of a new litter control
campaign.
The idea of the campaign, run by
Grampians Central West Recovery
Group, is for locals to take photos
of litter on the sides of roads
and walking tracks so that the
organisation can get a better idea of
where and what to target.
While we will be starting a
Western Highway litter campaign
in the next few months, I am really
hoping we can get people to collect
data all over the region - hopefully it
will tell us what the litter problems
are and where they are - not just
the highway, GCWWRRG Acting
Executive Officer La Vergne
Lehmann told the Moorabool News.
She said rather than relying on
anecdotal evidence or expensive
litter audits which can only be done
from time to time, GCWWRRG is
asking the community to use the
Litterati App to record and tag the
litter as they see it.
We can crowd source the
information that we would never be
able to get ourselves. With so many
people possessing a smartphone or
tablet these days it is not difficult to
download the app and photograph
litter, tag it and upload it on
Litterati.
Building the database, over time,
will help GCWWRRG to address
specific problems such as the
growing problem of coffee cups.
We know people care about their
local environment and want to
do what they can to help. Apart
from picking up the litter they can
also provide us with the benefit of
finding out what it is in a relatively
easy way and often while they are
doing their usual activities such as
walking their dog or getting some
exercise.

Speed is in the fine print

Internet service providers
are advertising superfast
speeds that some customers
may never actually acquire.
The Australian Competi-
tion and Consumer Com-
mission (ACCC) is cracking
down on retailers selling
inaccurate broadband plans
on the NBN network.
The NBN is a wholesaler,
not a retailer, meaning in-
ternet providers promote
their own plans and choose
which speeds to advertise,
between 7pm-11pm, rather
than the maximum speed
during off peak times, such
as between 1am and 5am.
Minister for Regional Com-
munications, Fiona Nash
said the product has to
match the label.

Notice is given of an Annual General Meeting to be held at the Navigators Community Centre,
on Tuesday 12 September 2017 commencing at 7:30pm.
The purpose of the meeting is to nominate no less than three or more than nine adult persons
as the Committee of Management for the Navigators Community Centre for a term of 3 years.
The current committees term will expire on Monday 4 September 2017. All positions will be
declared open and nominations will be accepted prior to or at the meeting.
Members of the public are most welcome to attend.

COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM WINTER 2017
The Winter 2017 Community Grants Program will open on Friday 1 September 2017 and close
Thursday 28 September 2017. Applicants will be able to apply for a community grant through
Councils website.
Council is inviting project applications from community groups and organisations under the
following grant categories:
Community Strengthening Grants:
Community programs, activities or initiatives (grants of up to $5000)
Capital improvements (grants of up to $5000)
Small projects (grants of up to $1,500)
Community Arts Grants:
Community arts activities or initiatives that link artists with local communities through
small projects, publications, exhibitions, performances or other similar activities (grants of
up to $3,000)
Community Events Grants:
Community events that showcase local talent, provide public entertainment, foster
community participation, connectedness and diversity (grants of up to $3,000)

ans Affairs (DVA) has in-
troduced measures to make
it easier for those affected
to access compensation and
to receive the mental health
support they need.
The Department has broad-
ened the acceptance of statu-
tory declarations as part
of compensation claims,
making it possible for such
declarations to constitute
sufficient evidence to estab-
lish that abuse took place.
This change will benefit
those who may not have re-
ported abuse at the time it
occurred or who have never
previously spoken about it.
A dedicated team has also
been established to manage
all new claims relating to
sexual and physical abuse.
Treatment for all mental
health conditions is now free
for anyone who has served
just one day in the full-time
ADF. The Veterans and Vet-
erans Families Counsel-
ling Service also provides
specialist free counselling
to access the support and
benefits the Department

Dear Editor,
I cant help wondering what
our war veterans would
have thought as they so gal-
lantly defended the rights
and freedoms of Australians
- and Australian values - if
they knew what was going
to happen to those values
within decades.
Would they have given
their lives for a nation that
would now condemn them?
The traditional values that
made this nation great are
under attack by those who
think they are more educat-
ed, worldly or more socially
aware.
Immigration is high in Aus-
tralia and multiculturalism
is warmly embraced, yet
there appears to be an ongo-
protagonists in this ugly,
divisive, social engineering
that is actually trashing the
freedom of speech and re-
spect they so demand others
have of them.
We are now seeing this in
Local Government. Our
deepest cultural values are
being marginalised by the
strong Socialist Left and
Green dominated Councils
of Darebin and Yarra.
Not recognising Australia
Day on January 26th - ac-
tively promoting same sex
marriage policy - and pre-
venting our new immigrants
from proper assimilation to
our values and lifestyle - are
a slow moving tidal wave
that will eventually drown
us if we dont challenge this
movement head on.
Our schools are under at-
tack with social engineering
curriculum being intro-
duced under the guise of an-
ti-bullying. It is manipulat-
ing the next generation into
a confused gender-neutral
society that demands it is
owed something.

More than 150 new train ser-
vices have been introduced to
Victorias busiest regional rail
corridors.
A new V/Line timetable began
on Sunday (August 27) following
an announcement by Minister
for Public Transport Jacinta Allan
last month.
The new timetables have added
19 new services to the Ararat
line, including an extra weekday
morning train that forms a ser-
vice to Melbourne at Ballarat, and
a weekday afternoon service from
Southern Cross to Wendouree.
The busy corridor between Ben-
digo and Ballarat will benefit
from an additional 18 weekly ser-
vices, as will Gippsland.
The new schedule will also see 69
extra services for Geelong, includ-
ing 30 new services every week-
end. The extra services will mean
trains at least every 40 minutes
between 7am and 7pm every day.
The 151 extra services will take
the total number of regional services added this year to 231 61 more than announced in the
Victorian State Budget 2016/17.
Passengers will also benefit in the future from the Victorian and Federal Governments $1.6
billion Regional Rail Revival, which will deliver more train services and better rail infra-
structure for regional Victorians.
The timings of coaches and buses that connect with trains will be adjusted to reflect the new

About 80-years ago, Wilhelmina Mina Caldwell (Adamson) left
England on a steamship with no idea of what her future would
hold for her.
She was the fourth party of migrant children who disembarked
in Melbourne on January 6, 1939, following a six-week journey.
She was just nine-years-old.
Mina was transported by private car to Lady Northcote Farm
School at Glenmore, near Bacchus Marsh, which she called home
for the next seven years.
The initial plan was to journey with her younger brother David
and older sister Elizabeth Ann, however, in the days leading up to
her departure, young David cried and cried, until it was decided
that he would stay home in England.
Mina never said goodbye to her little brother, who went off to
school unbeknown to the fact that he would not see his sister for
another 50-years.
The voyage to Australia holds wonderful memories for Mina,
despite the first three-days leaving her feeling sick as a dog.
She recalls the steamship passing the Rock of Gibraltar at night
time and eventually docking in Melbourne, where William
Angliss and G. J Coles, among other important trustees, met the
migrant children and transported them straight to Glenmore in
the Rowsley Valley.
The summer of 1939 was one of the hottest and driest summers
on record. Mina recalls there being very little water available at
Lady Northcote, so after only a few days of residence, children
were placed in trucks and transported to Ocean Grove, where
they lived for around three-weeks. The children slept in tents,
with beds made from hessian bags stuffed with straw.
The seeds would stick through and poke you in your sunburnt
skin, even at 88-years-old I can remember how uncomfortable
that was, Mina said.
Once the summer school holidays were over, Mina returned to
Lady Northcote. Upon arrival, a school was yet to be established
in the area and Mina, who commenced her education in grade-
five, took classes inside one of the dorm cottages. In a matter of
weeks, she was relocated to Glenmore State School, which was
later moved in part to the Main Street of Bacchus Marsh a site
that Mina viewed from her back veranda many years later.
Glenmore State School was located about a quarter-mile from
Lady Northcote. Students travelled back at lunch-time to enjoy a
hot lunch.
Mina recalls being a happy child, who was quiet and read a lot.
Her sister was quite the opposite a boisterous young girl who
found herself in a lot of trouble.
During their spare time, children were fairly free to do as they
wished, with plenty of activities to take part in. Mina enjoyed
going for long walks in the bush, horse riding, and netball. She
was in charge of the Lady Northcote library, which she loved, and
would often knock off at the end of the day and play tennis with
a friend.
During the summer, children would swim in a dam located on
the farm, where a wire used to transport the children halfway
across the water before dropping them in.
You either sunk or swam, Mina said.
I hated swimming, but my sister loved it.

During the drought, children also used the dam to wash. In
1939, Mina remembers the whole of Victoria being ablaze, with
children watching the bushfires, which from a distance looked
like an assortment of bright lights.
Lady Northcote Farm School was, according to Mina, very strict
and run like the military. A one-armed ex-British Grenadier
guard called Colonel Heath was a strict disciplinarian that used
a megaphone to address children. Seven days a week Mina was
woken early and made to do military style exercises before school
or duties that included maintaining the neatness of the farm and
gardens.
At the age of 12, Mina left school after just three-years. She hoped
to gain a scholarship in order to continue her education, but only
one girl was chosen among 26. Instead, she spent another year
attending classes with Mr Menzies, who created a grade nine
especially for her and formed a friendly relationship that later saw
him give Mina away at her wedding.
Following her schooling, Mina worked in the Lady Northcote
laundry seven-days a week. She later commenced work at the
White House, where principal Mr Brown lived with his wife
and children. Mina cooked for the family and looked after the
children a job she did so well that she ended up staying there
right up until she was 16-years-old.
Her following employment included work on a Myrniong
Farm, where she was expected to milk cows as well as perform
household duties. A welfare officer from Lady Northcote was in
charge of her wages, with half of her weekly earnings put away in
order to help her save until she was 21-years-old.
Mina later commenced employment in mother craft nursing
at the Presbyterian Babies Home in Camberwell, followed by a
rehabilitation centre for child polio in Hampton.
At 17, the principal of Lady Northcote rang the centre to inform
Mina that her mother had died, aged only 53.
Mina stayed at the rehabilitation centre until she was 18-years-
old. She entered general nursing and spent about two years
training at the Ballarat Base Hospital, before returning to Bacchus
Marsh, where she has called home ever since.
Married and with four children, Mina saved like mad and
returned to England in the early 1970s, where an emotional
reunion took place with the family she had long left behind.
It had been 50-years since she had seen her younger brother
David, who said he thought he would never forgive her for not
saying goodbye, but after finally being reunited, he did.
Mina has been a regular attender of Lady Northcote Farm Schools
annual reunions an event she said allowed her to reminisce and
catch up with old friends.
At the anniversary of 50 years, she was reunited with women that
were also part of the fourth party of children who disembarked in
Melbourne in 1939.
At the recent 80th anniversary, held at the farm, she was flooded
with old memories as she visited House 12, a building located on
site that was recently restored by the Old Northcote Association.
Mina says she has no regrets in life, and while she wished she
had received more of an education, she was always grateful that
her mother made sacrifices in order to give all of her children a
better life.
I never blamed my mother for sending me away. I am grateful
for the life I have.

loss of course meant we also lost hold on top spot and now go into the
finals finishing in 2nd place but still have the double chance. Next weeks
game will be against Lake Wendouree.
Reserves played a great game to close the H&A season out with a 45
point victory where they lead from the start till the finish continually
pulling away each quarter. The boys have finished in 5th position and will
play Lake Wendouree in a knock out final next week.
U18s had a tougher game where scores were equal at 1/4time, Redan
McPherson Street Ph 5367 7442 were kept scoreless in the 2nd quarter, our boys actually found themselves
behind at the last break by 7 points and in the last quarter came home to
win by 19 points whilst again keeping Redan scoreless. The boys have
also finished in 5th position and will play Lake Wendouree next week also

Womens Seniors Football It was a fantastic effort by the ladies on the
Bacchus Marsh weekend where they ran out winners by 16 points against the team that
sat on top of the ladder. They have now booked themselves straight into

The Home and Away Season has all too
quickly come to an end and now we
start a finals campaign for the Senior
and Reserves Football sides. The U18.5
footballers finished their year with
a creditable performance given their
youth and lack of experience. Our 5
Netball teams all played a fantastic
year but were not rewarded with finals
appearances.
DFNC wishes to thank all of our
wonderful sports men and women
for a terrific season of clean and vital
competition that typifies the solidarity
of our club. It has been a long, hard
season but a very enjoyable one, for

FOOTBALL
SENIORS: The mighty Devils proved
far too strong for the Panthers on Satur-
day and we settled ourselves nicely into
third spot for the finals. Stellar perfor-
mances by big men Kyle Docherty and
Darren Leonard nullified the influence
that Fevola tried to exert on the game.
Centres and on-ballers were scintillat-
ing with the likes of Luther Baker, Luke
Delahey and Heath Scotland running
the Panthers ragged. Brian Graham
starred with 4 goals despite receiv-
ing a serious knock to the head off the
play. The brilliance of Leigh Spiteri was
something to behold. Spud seemed
to have the ball on a string in his many
possessions around the ground and his
7 goals straight were the flourish to his
great game.
