SUMMARY

Introduction: Nurse plays an important part in the healthcare system so it is very crucial to be prepared to
the unknown critical scenarios that will happen to the hospital. Nurses must have at least a basic knowledge
of emergency care, the triage process, and the fundamentals of communication during a disaster or mass
casualty event. Having a leadership skills and knowledge will help to achieve a positive outcome. The aim
of the study is to describe the use of simulation as a compelling learning strategy to improve the leadership
skills and knowledge of the students by the nursing faculty.
Methods: The Boston Marathon bombing simulation is one curricular example developing leadership
competencies within a community health active learning simulation related to disaster preparedness.
Marathon bombing simulation help students apply classroom knowledge. In this simulation, students
participated in major incident triage and the application of leadership competencies to appropriately manage
victims care. Prioritising care and hospital management was also conducted whereas students were divided
in different units in the hospital which are emergency room, critical care and medical surgical unit to test
their leadership and collaboration competencies in each area. All of the students and faculty were involved
in debriefing related to leadership and management decisions made on each unit. In ambiguous situations,
students and faculty discussed the nuances that might influence how the decision making might be altered.
Conclusion: Strong leadership during simulation seen in the students that improves outcomes for casualties
and improves their experiences as a healthcare team. There is a vital need for focused development of
nursing leadership competencies in all settings (Institute of Medicine, 2010). Partnership among faculty
members when conducting simulation scenarios is a powerful approach to nursing education. Students can
use their experience in this simulation in their future nursing career.
Implication to nursing management
Nursing Practice: As a health care provider, as a future nurse it is my obligation to be equipped in
leadership skills and decision making. This research will remind the HCP team that good relationship
with each other that includes teamwork and good communication are the recipes for an successful
outcome. Furthermore, the Boston Marathon bombing simulation provides an opportunity for
development of leadership competencies for both student nurses and qualified nurses, addressing the
current needs of the nursing profession.
Nursing Education: By implementing a designed simulation that focuses on a realistic event that the
students can relate to within their own social context, the simulation enable students to feel as if the
simulation is more true to life. Collaboration among faculty members when designing simulation
scenarios is a powerful approach to nursing education.
Nursing Research: The study should also be conducted to all of the hospitals and universities around the
Philippines so that we can know the issues or the problems that nurses need to develop in their leadership
and management skills. The simulation in the article must be applied in order for us to develop the skills
and values mentioned above to provide a good relationship to our colleagues and quality care to our
patients.
