As you know, dues Notifications have been sent out, and I am very happy with the response so far. Please
keep those dues
coming in. I am currently preparing The Retention Committee Report and will soon forward it to the Reten-
tion Committee for personal follow up. Hopefully you would have already sent in your dues by then. If I
have not received your dues or have not heard from you, after that, if directed by the Retention Committee,
I will forward a Knight Alert letter to the delinquent

My Brothers and Sisters,

Is it back to School time already? Wow, where did the summer go?

I have been busy visiting your Councils and conducting all of the Installation of Officer
Ceremonies at all of the Councils in the District, and will be wrapping all of that up before
September is over. Its been great being able to install all of the Officers in the Third District. It is
the best thing about being a District Deputy. It has also been my privilege to be invited to many of
the Installations around the County, and I really enjoy being able to see all of the other DDs
perform the Ceremony as well. You get to see it from the Councils side and really get a chance to
listen to the words and appreciate them even more. We truly are Blessed in Suffolk County, and in
the Third District specifically, with some of the finest Officers that it is my Honor to know.
Our District is conducting a Formation Degree on September 7th at St. Jude in Rocky Point. If you have not been
able to get to a Formation Degree in the past year or so, please make an effort to do so. Our District has one of, if not
the best, Formation Degree Teams anywhere, and it is truly a wonderful experience. I hope to see you there to welcome
in our New Second Degree Members. Jackets and ties are required to attend. Thank you.
I would like to take a moment to congratulate all of the Outgoing Grand Knights from our District. I am very Proud
to say that every Council in our District, Patchogue, Queen of all Hearts, J.V. Kavanaugh, St. Jude and Our Lady of the
Pines all received the Columbian Award this past Columbian Year 2016-2017. The Columbian Award is given to
Councils for conducting outstanding Programs. Great work Brothers!
I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. Please remember to always carry a Form 100 Membership
Application with you and sign up some new Members. It is your Moral Obligation to ask every Catholic man you know
to become a Member.

Vivat, Jesus

District Deputy NY3
Chairman of the Board of the Suffolk County Board of District Deputies

Our August Chapter Meeting was held in Patchogue and It was a very good meeting, and a very
good turnout. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond anyones Control, the Knight of the
Year Presentation had to be postponed and moved to the November Meeting at Fr. Judge
Council. That will also be the Chapters Chaplains Appreciation Night . Chapter Chairman
Gregg Warnokowski introduced a new Program at the August Meeting. Bob Lopez, PGK of Our
Lady of the Pines Council will be giving a Fathers for Good Report at each Meeting and will
be working on putting that very worthwhile Program together. The September Chapter Meeting
will be at St. Jude Council in Rocky Point at 8pm.

The Exemplification of the Fourth Degree is scheduled for Sunday October 8th. Time is
running out for you to get your Applications filled out and handed in. The cut-off is the
September 27th Meeting at St. Isidore School, located at 515 Marcy Ave, Riverhead, NY
11901. Meeting begins at 8 pm.. The Assembly Installation of Officers will be held at
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on September 24th following the 11:30 am Mass, with a dinner
Reception to be held at Patchogue Council immediately following the Ceremony.
Tickets are $40 per person. Please contact Our Assembly Coordinator Vinny Letteri for
more information on these upcoming events, or for a Fourth Degree Application.

From our St. Francis DeSales Coordinator Pat Mulloso:

and Picnic. Mass will be at 11:00am with the Picnic to follow. St Francis is expecting 400
people. The Council will be providing, as in past years, the hotdogs, burgers, and rolls along
with the barbequing. PGK Bill Fontaine and the Council will be running a Soccer Challenger

CHAPLAINS REPORT:
THE NEW PHASE OF EVANGELIZATION AND THE K OF C

The statistics are appalling: For every one soul that enters the Catholic Church in America, 6.45
Catholic souls leave; by the age of 29, over one-half of baptized Catholic young adults have
joined the ranks of the nones,or those having no religion; and 70 percent of young adult
Catholics who leave the Church do so by the age of 23. This is the sobering context of the
recent Convocation of Catholic Leaders on the topic of: The Joy of the Gospel in America,
held in July in Orlando, Fla.
Fr. Jonathon D. Kalish,
O.P. Director of Pope Francis vision of missionary discipleship and pastoral accompaniment demands that the
entire Church devote the necessary effort to advancing along the path of a pastoral and
Chaplains and Spiritual
Development
missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are (Evangelii Gaudium,
25). How do we prevent more than six souls from leaving the sacred faith for every one soul that puts on the new
man of Christ? Who will share the Good News that it is possible to live this way when tens of thousands of young
adult Catholics are leaving the Church each year to embrace a culture of meaninglessness, scientism, relativism and
self-invention? How can the Church retain the members of the Body of Christ when secular membership in a gym
appears to offer the social interaction, self-betterment and accountability millennials crave? In 1881, a New Haven
vicar with four years of priesthood under his belt faced similar odds. His response was to rally the Civil War veteran
husbands and fathers of St. Marys parish. Together, they would combat the spiritual warfare of his day with a new
ardor, serving as missionary disciples to the many baptized Catholic immigrant men who were exiting the Church in
droves. In his vision of the Knights of Columbus, Father McGivney saw what Evangelii Gaudium calls a
spirituality which can offer healing and liberation, and fill them with life and peace, while at the same time
summoning them to fraternal communion and missionary fruitfulness (89).

As chaplains, we have no better model of what it means to be a Catholic priest with the smell of the sheep as
well as a priest with a desire to foster the leadership gifts of the laity than Father McGivney. There is no other
Catholic lay organization so ready to accompany and assist the gradual return of Catholics who have slipped to the
sidelines of the nones. Let us take seriously the challenge before the Church in our times, robustly encourage our
brother Knights to step into the breach and accompany on the road back all our brothers and sisters who have left.
Vivat Jesus!

Congratulations to our Newest Brother Knight,
Travis Drawbridge. Travis recently turned 18 and at
the first opportunity he attended an Admission Degree
at Queen of all Heart Council on August 17th and
became a member of our Council and of our Order.
Many of us have known Travis for a number of years,
and have watched him grow from a little boy into a
fine young man. We are all happy and Proud of Travis
for becoming a member, but none as proud as his
Father, Kevin (pictured behind Travis), who currently
serves as a Guard at our Council. Also pictured with
Travis (from L to R) is Brother Rich Costa, Grand
Knight John Praino, District Deputy Mike Boehm
PGK, and District Warden Kevin Hanley.

Its C & B time again!!! Our Council will be out selling C & B
books and we need your help. Contact our GK John Praino and
find out how and when you can assist. If you cannot get involved
selling books, we ask that you please purchase (or sell) the two
books that you received with your new Membership Card.
Thank you.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE
September 11th
God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world:
peace in the hearts of all men and women
and peace among the nations of the earth.
Turn to your way of love
those whose hearts and minds
are consumed with hatred,
and who justify killing in the name of religion.
God of understanding,
overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy,
we seek your light and guidance
as we confront such terrible events.
Grant that those whose lives were spared
may live so that the lives lost
may not have been lost in vain.
Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope,
and give us the wisdom and courage
to work tirelessly for a world
where true peace and love reign
among nations and in the hearts of all.
-Pope Francis Prayer Service at Ground Zero

The Fourth Degree Color Corp Regalia: Change is Good?

VS.

Do you know what these two Photos above depict? Yeah, I know, they are both dummies. But seriously, There is a big
change coming to the Fourth Degree Regalia and many members are not happy about it. Now the Regalia of the current
Fourth Degree Honor Guard is well known. You can spot it a mile away when you are watching a Parade. It lends
Dignity and Honor when you see those Brother Knights standing at the side of a fallen Fourth Degree Brother. As you
all know, Fourth Degree Knights are known as SIR KNIGHTS. Lets take a moment to look back on who the Knights
of old were, and what was their purpose. When knighthood was in flower, knights carried the sword to defend their
God, their Church, their country and their fellow man according to the code of chivalry. Today, Sir Knights wear their
Regalia and carry the sword to honor Christ and His apostles, especially on religious and civic occasions. Hence, the
primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to encourage active Catholic citizenship and foster the spirit of patriotism in
members and the community at large. The public appearance of Fourth Degree Knights as a Color Corps at religious
and civic functions is an important activity of each assembly. Their colorful capes and chapeaux add dignity and the
pride of Church and country to any event. By these public demonstrations their loyalties bring credit to themselves and
to the Knights of Columbus. But apparently, our Supreme Board of Directors feel that our current Regalia is an
impediment. They claim that it prevents members from wanting to become members of the Fourth Degree. And even
to take it a step further, they believe that our Regalia is a reason that young men do not want to join the Knights of
Columbus at all. The board of directors made this decision earlier this year after a three year period of testing and
discussion. In addition, changing the uniform/regalia was previously discussed with the vice supreme masters at the
Supreme Assembly. I wonder how many of those Brother Knights wore the Regalia themselves. How many of them
scrimped and saved and put aside a couple of dollars here and there until they had enough to buy their Regalia, so that
they were able to serve their Assemblies proudly, and to stand Vigil at their fallen Brothers Coffin? They claim that for
years, supreme officers and directors have received comments from members and prospective members that the old
regalia was a barrier to membership overall, or to membership in the Fourth Degree. Really? Some comments? That
doesnt sound like any kind of extensive study or polling of the body of our Order. I have personally recruited many
members. I have personally taken an active role in many recruitment drives in Suffolk County. I have personally asked
many members to become Fourth Degree members. I have NEVER had anyone say to me that they didnt want to join
because of our Regalia. Ive had a few ask if they became Fourth Degree would they have to wear Regalia, and when
it was explained to them that it was totally optional, they said ok. Ive also had many guys say they joined the Knights
of Columbus just because they wanted to be in the Honor Guard, like their Father was, or their Uncle was, or ever since
they were a little kid and they saw members of the Honor Guard standing at a relatives or neighbors coffin. Those
stories are innumerable. Countless. The members of the Honor Guard that I have the pleasure to know, from many
different Assemblies from all over, are some of the hardest working, most dedicated Brother Knights that it has been
my privilege to know and stand with. They wear their Regalia proudly, with Honor. And I have not heard one of them
say that they will purchase and wear this new Uniform. Not one. Including myself.

I totally understand Supremes concern with recruiting new Members. I understand we need to appeal to younger men. I
am willing to do whatever I can to help come up with new ways to do that. And I know that they did this with the
Good of the Order in Mind. But I believe that this effort is totally misguided and a misstep. This is clearly an example
of taking your core group of members for granted while trying to appeal to a new group. Every member of the Knights
of Columbus is bound to obey the Rules and Laws of the Order, and the Supreme Board of Directors, or you put your
membership in peril. This new Uniform will go into effect fully on July 1st, 2018. That may be the end of the Honor
Guard as we know it.

fun with the Pony Rides. Special thanks to Picnic Chairman
