TITLE: Fly Factory: An Exploration of Biotic Platform for Species Interaction, Research and
Production as an Alternative typology towards Urban Regeneration.

REASONS/ JUSTIFICATIONS IN CHOOSING THE TOPIC:

There exist 2 reasons in choosing the topic first is the global issue which revolves around the
general problems caused by mainly human activities and second is the current situation of the site
describing the researchs urban and architectural context.
One of the main reason in choosing this topic are the changes caused mainly by human
activity, economic development, rapid urbanization, deforestation and expansion of agricultural lands
which leads to habitat loss of many endangered organisms in most cities of the country specifically on
the metro manila, the evident urban blight brought by over- exploitation, global warming, pollution
and depleting resources causes an upset in this sensitive equilibrium within our ecosystem. The stress
effect on biodiversity is starting to surface as global food crisis, excessive waste generation, water
scarcity, water pollution, electricity shortages and pest breakouts, the connections between human,
endangered species, pest species and excess waste generation within an urban context will be explored
and will be one of the main reason for this research.
Air pollution, atmospheric effects, ground water pollution, health effects soils and land
pollution, degrading property values these are just one of the drastic effects brought by every landfills
in every community, not including the Quezon City government plans to permanently close the
payatas sanitary landfill by the end of 2017because the sanitary is already near its carrying capacity
limit, 7 years after it was opened. Upon reaching the landfill limit and with current industry as
outdated and unsustainable the vision proposed by this study is to reform the site by unlocking its
potential for regenerating both the community and the ecology along the perimeters of the urban
context. Factors like degraded ecology, geology and water source (La Mesa Water Dam Reservoir).
The current conditions are not optimal for urban regeneration thus the intervention will seek to
recreate a sustainable natural and urban ecosystem within a productive landscape.
The architectural context is to energize the fixed concept of a factory, to restore production
and research as integrated process, to connect the natural and built environment. To flourish the
communitys socio economic, ecological and possibly cultural growth.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GROWTH OF KNOWLEDGE IN
ARCHITECTURE:
As architect we are very much aware of the flora which form part of this interwoven tapestry
we call environment, but tend to forget the fauna and smaller invertebrate also have a crucial role
within the ecosystem which contribute to health of the whole. This research might serve as a pilot
manual on how we can handle modern landfills and how to design to current situation, this helps
improve community and enter urban regeneration.
