Title of Project: Special Needs Cheerleading Team
Abstract of Project (175 words) -
My name is Taylor Hill and for my EDGE project I will be starting a special needs
cheerleading team. This team will take place at The Point dance studio. The people
involved will be students with special needs from CTA. These students will range in age
from 14-18 and will have all different special needs. I will be working on this project from
March 31st to May 31st. For my project I will hold practice once a week, make up
routines, arrange performances, set up for practices, and be there to help at
performances. During class time I will teach the students cheers, jumps, modified
stunts, and modified tumbling. This will help the students develop and improve social
and motor skills. I want to complete this project because I want to give students with
special needs something to be proud of and feel a part of. I also want to gain
experience working with students with special needs because I am going to be a
teacher one day and chances are I will have a student in my class with special needs.
Larger Purpose: The larger purpose for me for this project is to become a more
compassionate and understanding person. I hope that by working with people who may
need a little extra help with things will teach me patience and love for everyone. I hope
that through this experience I will see that everyone is special and important in their own
way. Each of us can contribute to the happiness of others no matter how big or small, in
our own way. I also hope to provide a place where these students can feel a sense of
belonging as well as safety. I hope to create something both the students and myself
can be proud of.
Project Goal: For my EDGE project I will plan, prepare, and teach valuable
cheerleading routines to special needs students, to perform.
1-3 Outcome(s): 1. Students will gain a sense of belonging to something and be proud
of themselves
2. Students will enhance their motor skills and be active.
3. I will become more understanding to people with special needs and be able to help
them in my future classroom.
Deliverable(s): I will provide a powerpoint detailing my involvement in the cheerleading
team. My comments will include what I did, what the students did, and what I learned
and noticed about their progress. I will also include photos and videos of my service and
the performances of my cheerleading team, along with a log of my hours served.
Differentiation: This project will help me to stand out by showing that I care for my
students and have experience teaching special needs students. When I apply for a job
my employers will want to see both of these things on my resume. This will also set me
apart because it will show that I am organized and care enough for students to provide
them with this opportunity.
