Welcome to Physics Class!

Physics is the study of how natural forces influence the behavior of matter and energy. Our goal is to
understand the patterns which these forces follow, and to use reasoning and math to predict the
outcome of certain interactions.

Materials
Notebook and plenty of paper. Graph paper may also be appropriate for some topics.
Binder or folder to organize notes and/or handouts.
Pencils and sharpener or spare lead for mechanical pencils. Pens are not recommended.
Algebraic or graphing calculator. No cell phone calculators allowed.

Grading System: Summative Assessments 60%

Tests 30%
Labs/Projects 30%

Formative Assessments 40%

Quizzes 15%
Homework 15%
Class Assignments 10%

Classwork Class time may be devoted to worksheets, data analysis, or simple experiments, either
independently or in small groups. Students are expected to provide honest effort answering all
questions.

Homework May consist of textbook reading and exercises, take-home packets, and/or individual
research. Students are encouraged to try every problem, and to refer to the solutions when they are
presented. The teacher reserves the right to review homework in class or collect it at any time.

Tests and Quizzes Assessments will consist of multiple choice, short answer, and open-ended
questions using both math skills and written explanations. Questions will be based on primarily on
examples from classwork and homework and may ask students to solve for unknown information,
interpret data and diagrams, or explain certain concepts discussed in class.
Lab Reports Labs are meant to recreate and observe our lessons in the real world. We will assess
whether the results agree with our studies, and if they teach us something new about physical
science. Lab reports must be presented neatly and demonstrate all steps of the scientific method.
Grades will be based on completion, organization, and analysis and conclusion.

Projects Students will demonstrate what they understand by modeling, presenting, and/or
explaining physical science in action. Projects may include aspects of research, short essay writing, or
testing simple devices. The purpose is to thoroughly explore major topics and to allow for creative
and individualized learning.

Class Rules
Arrive to class on time. If you are late, have a pass from your previous teacher or supervisor.
Unexcused lateness or absence will not be tolerated.

Come to class ready to participate. Have your notebook, pencil, calculator, and any other
materials out and ready to use.

Have all homework and other assignments completed on time and ready to pass in.

Students will be given two days to finish work they missed for each day they are out with an
excused absence. Any work assigned prior to their absence is expected to be completed.

Listen to and follow all instructions. Not only is it polite to pay attention, but there may be
important safety procedures to follow when we begin using equipment.

Keep your electronics (phones, music players, games, etc.) in your bag or pocket, either off or
silent, unless otherwise instructed. Unauthorized use of electronics will result in confiscation;
repeat offenses may result in additional discipline.

No drinks or snacks other than water. This is both school policy as well as common sense keeping
our classroom clean of spills and crumbs, as well as protecting ourselves from contamination.
Furthermore, this prevents accidental exposure to foods which may trigger allergic reactions.

Do not be disruptive to the classroom environment. This includes interrupting the teacher or
classmates, being loud and/or abrasive, not paying attention or working on assignments, having
poor or immature behavior, and other issues. These actions will be met with disciplinary
measures.

Students are expected to be academically honest at all times. Cheating and plagiarism of any kind
will not be tolerated, and will result in zero credit as well as disciplinary action.
