AgLEAD I Course Descriptions

AgLEAD I Opening Session

Proposed Date: 9/25/2010

Location: University of Tennessee-Agricultural Campus

Course Description: AgLEAD I’s opening session is a special one, participants have the opportunity to
become familiar with communication techniques and methods that will be utilized throughout the
program. This seminar will be a family friendly, family welcomed environment that will include light
refreshments. The AgLEAD reception will introduce participants to the program through a short series of
leadership building activities. Friends of the program will welcome the new class.

Participants and family are invited to browse the “tradeshow” style showcase of the University of
Tennessee’s Agriculture Campus, also known as Ag Day. Families have the option to prepurchase
discounted football game tickets for that evening’s game by going to:

the AgLEAD game watching party.

Agricultural Overview-Know Tennessee Agriculture

Proposed Date: 10/28/2010

Location: Madisonville Farm Bureau Office

Course Description: This course is designed to help class members engage and network with
representatives of various agricultural agencies from across Tennessee. Proposed visitors include
officials from the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program, the Tennessee Center for Profitable
Agriculture and Mike Zelnic, Director of the Tennessee Department of Homeland Security.

Following classroom activity, the class will depart to conduct the Tennessee field study/tour in and
around the Madisonville area. The topic of the study is Tennessee Switchgrass.

Out of State Study-Lexington, Kentucky

Proposed Date: 12/2/2010

Location: University of Kentucky/Various

Course Description: Transportation and lodging provided-The van will depart on Thursday evening after
common work hours (around 7 PM). Friday’s study will begin promptly and will include tours of
Lexington area farms including area Thoroughbred operations and the University of Kentucky.

Media Training/Social Media

Proposed Date: 1/19/2011

Location: Madisonville Farm Bureau Office

Course Description: As media attention on agriculture continues to grow, so does the emphasis that is
placed on agricultural leaders and their ability to clearly communicate the message of agriculture. Media
professionals will polish the skills of class members through an interactive program that will prepare
students to be reactive as well as proactive in the eyes of media.

Social media instruction including an introduction and overview of programs such as Facebook, Twitter,
Skype, etc…

Tennessee Young Leaders Conference

Proposed Date: 2/2011

Location: Pigeon Forge

Course Description: The Tennessee Council of Cooperatives Young Leaders Conference has long been a
showcase conference for agricultural leaders. YLC is a family welcomed function of AgLEAD. Tuition
includes lodging for one night of the conference.

YLC features premier speakers from around the nation and a selection of leadership breakout sessions.
The conference tradeshow and educational tours will provide excellent industry networking
opportunities.

Nashville Legislative Visits

Proposed Date: 3/2011

Location: Nashville

Course Description: Transportation and lodging provided. Evening of Arrival-The final course of the
program culminates in Nashville. Upon arrival a legislative process overview will be conducted prior to
the evening’s dinner, likely with other Tennessee agri-leadership groups. The evening’s meetings will be
conducted at the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.

Day of Return- Class members will visit the House of Representative’s Agriculture Committee meeting
followed by individual or small group meetings with legislators, these meeting will be scheduled in
advance.

Graduation Banquet

Proposed Date: 3/2011

Location: Athens SE Bank

Course Description: Class members will be recognized for a successful completion of AgLEAD I. Limited
guests, employers and program partners are welcomed to graduation. This is a time to recognize the
first AgLEAD alumni class.
