T: A pleasant morning ladies and gentlemen, I am Jobel Fernandez

M: I am Major Wee and this is

Both: Ginlaw Goaw 2017.

T: Barangay Goaw is located in the Municipality of Liloy, a third class municipality in

the province of Zamboanga del Norte

M: It is mainly an agricultural community with an economy that relies mostly on crop production such as
corn, rice, coconuts, peanuts, and root crops. It is known as the "Peanut Capital of ZaNorte".

T: In Barangay Goaw, fifty percent (50%) or 312 out of 622 surveyed individuals were females while
fifty percent (50%) or 292 out of 622 surveyed individuals were males. The figure also shows that
the largest portion of the surveyed individuals fell on the 15 years old and below age groups.

M: For the demographics, majority of the residents are Roman Catholic in religion, Visayan in eth-
nicity, attained elementary level of education, with 46% dependency ratio, 51% employment rate.
Furthermore, the source of income is mostly agricultural with 73% of the households fall below
poverty line

T: After our survey, the 6 identified health problems in the Barangay were as follows:

M: Improper Solid Waste Management

T: High Prevalence of Malnutrition

M: High Prevalence of Hypertension

T: Improper Water Sanitation

M: Irresponsible Pet Ownership

T: And Lack of Referral and Transport System

M: Today, we will present to you 3 of the 6 health problems identified.

T: First

M: Prevalence of hypertension

Both: LAWAS IATIAM ARUN ALTA PRESYON MALIKAYAN

M: Hypertension ranked 2nd in the top 10 diseases causing morbidity in the municipality and 3rd in the baran-
gay

T: The general objective is to decrease the percentage of uncontrolled hypertensive individuals

from 98% to 15%.

M: To increase the knowledge of identified hypertensive individuals on hypertension, the following

strategies were utilized:

T: BP: Alamin at Kontrolin,a one-hour class on hypertension,

M: with Distribution of DASH diet brochures,

T: Hataw na! A 45-minute cardio exercise from AHA, and,

M: Creation of a municipal ordinance prohibiting cigarettes, tobacco products and electronic ciga-
rettes in certain places.
T: Also, to further promote awareness, anti-smoking posters acquired from DOH were also placed in
the BHS.

M: As a result, an increase in the percentage scores from 50% to 85% was noted among hypertensive
individuals.

T: To increase the knowledge and skills of BHws on hypertension, the following activities were con-
ducted:
M: lecture -demonstration on proper assessment of vitals signs in collaboration with Red Cross-
Dipolog Chapter as well as focused group discussions among BHWs and the MHO, about hyperten-
sion.

M: Finally, to increase compliance in medication regimen from 0 to 85% and to intensify case find-
ing, the group conducted a series of mass BP-taking.

T: The group also scheduled a day in a week, called the Hypertension Day for BP-monitoring
and distribution of maintenance meds in the health station

M: Lastly, Kontrol Alta Presyon Program was developed to facilitate consultation and registration
of hypertensive individuals. This subsequently entitled them to avail free antihypertensive medica-
tions at the barangay.

T: As of March 2017, 87% of the hypertensive individuals were already compliant to their medica-
tion regimen.

M: Overall, only 13% of the hypertensive individuals were uncontrolled compared to the baseline of
98%, surpassing the goal of decreasing the number of uncontrolled hypertensive individuals to 15%.

T: With the success of this scheme, our groups project was adopted in the entire municipality of Liloy.
M: Barangay Goaw has a total of 70 dogs but only 4 of them were vaccinated, none of them were
registered. In 2016 alone, there were 2 unreported dog bites. Hence, Low number of dog owners
practicing responsible dog ownership was also deemed as a problem.

Both: Bantay ko, Alaga go

T: The general objective is to increase the percentage of dog owners practicing responsible dog
ownership from 0% to 70%.

M: One of the reasons of continued burden of dog and human rabies is the lack of awareness about
the disease among the general population.
T: Hence, to increase the knowledge regarding responsible dog ownership, health education
through a 20- minute DOH film was done.

M: Pamphlets were also given to serve as reminders at home.

T: To increase the percentage of registered dogs from 0% to 70%, a committee on the registry of
dogs was formed. The Bantay Rabies sa Barangay was composed of the barangay kagawads
headed by the Barangay Captain.

M: As of April 2017, 85% of the dogs in the barangay were registered.

T: As rabies is almost always 100% fatal yet 100%-vaccine-preventable, an anti-rabies campaign,

Bantay ko, Alaga Ko mass dog registration and vaccination activity was conducted
M: The services catered were free-of-charge. One dog collar and certificate was given to each dog.
Other pets, such as cats, were also registered and vaccinated.
T: As a result, the percentage of vaccinated dogs increased to 85%, surpassing the minimum na-
tional target of 70%.

M: Overall, the percentage of dog owners practicing responsible dog ownership increased from 0%
to 75%

T: In a wider scale, the municipal ordinance supporting the advocacy of preventing rabies and pro-
motion of responsible pet ownership was approved. With this, mandatory registration and vaccina-
tion of pets will facilitate future vaccination and registration activities. This will strengthen and
sustain the program initiated by the group.

M: With trauma being the 7th leading cause of morbidity but a there exists no documentation and
referral system on emergency cases, the last health problem is the high incidence of unrecorded
referred emergency cases.

Both: AGIANAN SA PAG-ATIMAN

T: With the general objective of determining the number of referred emergency cases to a higher
level of care in Barangay Goaw

M: In the pursuit of increasing the knowledge and skills of the youth, the BHws, members of BHERT,
and youth, the following strategies were conducted:

T: FIRST AID TRAINING: Alamin at Gawin Para sa Kaligtasan Natin, training on basic first aid
management,

M: BLS TRAINING, training on basic life support in coordination with Philippine Red Cross and
LDRRMZ,

T: First Aid Drill for Kids, lecture-demonstration and return demonstration about basic splint-
ing, bandaging techniques and first aid management.

M: Vital Signs Taking: Kaalaman Para sa Kalawasan,a lecture-demonstration on proper assess-

ment of vital signs with basic interpretation of results and,

T: To increase the resources available in the barangay for health emergency management accord-
ing to DOH protocol, First Aid Kits and Medical equipment were provided for the BHS.

M: The obstacle effect of distance in rural communities is stronger when combined with lack of transport. It
was for this reason that the Emergency Tricycle (EmT) was proposed to the LGU of Liloy.

T: Designed by the municipal engineer, it features a motorcycle capable of running on rough ter-
rain with a built-in stretcher and first-aid cabinet.

M: The EmT was intended to be the primary mode of transportation for surgical, medical and ob-
stetrical emergencies.

T: To increase the knowledge and skills of the BHWs and BHERT on proper documentation and re-
ferral system, a lecture discussion about the most common cases and the need for referral, and re-
turn demonstration on proper documentation and referral of different cases, were conducted.
M: As of April 2017, twelve out of 12 members of the emergency responders (BHWs and BHERT)
were equipped with the knowledge and skills on proper documentation and referral system.

T: Overall, 48 cases were responded and referredof which, 31 were medical, 8 were obstetrics
and 9 were surgical cases. Among the referred cases, 46 or 95.83% sought consult to a higher level
of care and were attended to.
M: Intended for a municipal-wide adoption, the response and referral system in the barangay serves
as a pilot study and will then undergo modifications depending on the outcome of its first year of
implementation.

T: Hence, the impact of the projects initiated in the barangay did not only benefit a small group of
people but the municipality as a whole.

M: In our 3 years of community exposure, we have come to understand that the process of building
such a healthy community does not occur by accident. It is important that the people themselves
are encouraged and motivated to plan, work together, and to initiate change
T: With the full support of the local government, barangay leaders and the residents, themselves,
we are confident that our advocacies were not only successfully carried-out but would also be sus-
tained in the years to come.

M: These are only 3 of the 6 community health plans we have initiated in our community.

T: In our batch alone, we have already fanned the flame of our school's mission both in Zamboanga del Sur
and Zamboanga del Norte.

M: For more than 20 years, we can see that ADZU-SOM has been in the forefront in overcoming health ineq-
uities through research and community health plans.

T: Truly, Ateneo de Zamboanga University School of Medicine has been producing doctors who are not mere-
ly confined within the 4 walls of the hospital, but doctors who dare to go out to the grassroots level where so-
cio-economic, behavioral and political problems play crucial roles in the over-all health of an individual and
community as a whole.

M: As Howard Zinn said small acts, when multiplied by millions of people can transform the world and in
Ateneo de Zamboanga School of Medicine, we are doing it one community at a time
