Tychicus
In the garden of Haterius a play was being acted. Paris a most famous pantomimus, was imitating the
death of queen Dido. There were many spectators, who had been invited by Vitellia , the wife of
Haterius. Paris was imitating with the most elegant movements and the most suitable grief the death
of the queen. When at last he fell down as if dead, all the spectators, affected by the same admiration,
applauded. Paris got up to accept the applause of the spectators.
But before he could do more, a man of short height and with a severe expression came forward and
asked with a loud voice for silence. Their eyes at once turned on him, the spectators wondered who
he was and what he wanted. Few of them knew. He was a Jew, called Tychicus, a client of Tiberius
Flavius Clementis. Paris himself is so amazed by the interrupted play that he stands motioneless. He
doesnt know at all what Tychicus is doing.
Listen, you wicked men! exclaimed Tychicus You evil worship this man as if he is a god. But there
are no gods except one! Only one god must be worshipped! This true god which many dont know, I
proclaim to you now.
The spectators began to murmursome asked others if Tychicus was making jokes or if he was insane;
others summoned slaves to throw him out ofthe garden. Tychicus persisted however.
The god, as our prophets predicted us, was born of man and lived among us. He cured the ill; He
preached the gospel; He promised us eternal life. Then he died, nailed to a cross, and was put in a
tomb. But on the third day he rose again and was seen alive by his disciples. Afterwards he ascended
to heaven where he reigns now and forever will reign.
When Tychicus declared this, Vitellius gave a sign to the servants to seize him. Dragging him to the
house, he shouted with a loud voice: Soon our Lord, the glorious king, will return to us; he will
descend from heaven with the sound of trumpets, accompanied by a large number of angels. He will
judge the living as well as the dead. Us Christians, if we have lived a pure life and have believed in him,
will ascend to heaven. There we will be with our Lord in eternal peace. You however Paris, son of the
devil, if you dont stop your life, will be given punishment. There will be no escape. Because flames,
sent from heaven, will devour you and all the wicked!
When he had said this, Tychicus was thrown out of the house, after receiving many blows. Many
spectators were mocking him loudly; a few however, mainly slaves and freedmen, who were Christians
themselves, were silent
