Summary:

Introducing the MDGs in the classroom through creative Pedagogy

By Bert Jazmin Tuga

Since 2000, when the United Nations Millennium Declaration was adopted by UN
member countries, the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), especially in teacher
education, are used as a means of exploring concepts of development and
sustainability among students. By understanding the context of MDGs and familiarizing
themselves with the eight goals, prospective teachers may acquire a "world view" of
education necessary to carry out their roles in the education of children in the 21st
century.

However, they all admitted that the concepts did not retain in their memory due to the
strategy used by the teacher when the concepts were presented to them. The students
inability to answer the above-mentioned question signifies the failure of the strategy to
affect meaningful learning among the students. Since it tackles social problems that
societies encounter everyday at different levels, MDGs are potentially meaningful
material. Actual meaningfulness, however, requires discovery, exploration, activity and
creativity among students. The answer is "creative pedagogy". Creative pedagogy is the
science and art of creative teaching. It embraced the research in the field of creativity
and places it into the classroom to enhance the teaching-learning process. To prepare
the students for the expectations of the selected pedagogy, students were engaged in a
"Paint me a picture" game. The second activity engaged students in a meaningful
listening activity. They were instructed to reflect as they listen to the song. To provide
the students with an overview of the concepts the teacher presented the Millennium
Development Goals: (1) Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger (2) Achieving
Universal Primary Education (3) Promoting Gender Equality (4) Reducing Child
Mortality (5) Improving (6) Combating AIDS/HIV, Malaria and other 1diseases (7)
Ensuring Environmental Sustainability (8) Forging Global Partnership MDGS are

important as they endorse a multidimensional view of development. Most, 2notably,
these different social problems are "cross-cutting" and have been adopted by 3many
countries and international development agencies as a basis for their work. MDGs are
especially significant for children because they cover most of the fundamental rights of
the child. They include many development indicators relevant to children. Most of the
other indicators cover areas that have a direct or indirect impact on children, such as
maternal mortality. With the presence of multimedia technology in the classroom
addressing modern learning styles and needs of the students, creative pedagogy could
be one best option which is equally compelling like the former. The only difference
maybe, in creative pedagogy, students will be engaged in higher forms of creativity
while investing on their very potentials that are yet to be discovered. As students sing,
act and dance, they are bringing themselves at the forefront of the learning process
where benefits of a meaningful, experiential and socially a responsive pedagogy are just
a few steps away.

II. Insights and Reflection:

The article talks about the Millennium Development Goals which will help the students
to be involved in different activities, and the learning's which meaningful to the students,
and the knowledge that they will attain.

Creative pedagogy teaches learners how to learn creatively, become creators of

themselves and builders of their future. It states that the learner should build their own
future in order for them to be ready to face the reality in life and to build their self
confidence. It also enhances and helps them to discover their talents such as memory,
Physical ability, communication etc. instead, Millennium development Goals
incorporates cognitive, affective, and psychomotor processes and outcomes.

The article says that the students enjoyed the activity in the step by step: most
importantly, the activity was processed by asking their thoughts and feelings while
portraying different roles, which inherent to the outcome that they will obtain. This will be
test their further understanding and feelings which abide to their different learning
outcomes.

I also agree of what Dr. Tuga says, that "It is good to have the content knowledge"
which very applicable in the school setting and the curriculum which is intended to the
outcomes and to the knowledge that each every learner would have. Also, the
importance for MDGs is that the students engaged in active and actual experience in
searching for knowledge and relevant information to carry out their tasks. This also
stipulated that it should have a collaborative effort and deep understanding with this
kind of activity.

III. Educational Implications:

Education is the field of study that deals mainly with methods offer teaching and
learning in schools, it is also the knowledge and development resulting from an
educational process. This serves as a pathway that education gives as a vital role for
giving each learner the ability to gain knowledge and help us every student reach their
goals in life. If the teacher wants to have a humorous environment it should be, give
his/her teaching style/ methods that each students would involve in every discussion.
Explore them, and experiencing various activities which is intended to their lessons,
through that the learners gain knowledge and to boast their self confidence and
development. By those students learning will serve as the assessment on how effective
the teacher was. Because each developer/teacher has a leadership, dedication and the
creative pedagogy which is abide to the Millennium Development Goals. In the 21st
century learner which the students varied from the technology, that they don't even
know the content and importance of each book, which just a simple tip on their finger,
millions of research and details will follow, it should be balance, the teachers will guide
for the future and the knowledge that each learner will have, and for the next
generation.
