Definition 1 Let f (x) be defined on an interval I and suppose we can find two
positive constants M and such that
(f + g)(x) Lip()
Then,
|f (x) f (y)| M1 |x y|
1
|g(x) g(y)| M2 |x y|
If (f + g) Lip() it imples that
M1 |x y| + M2 |x y| = |M1 + M2 ||x y|
Theorem 2 If f Lip() with > 1 then f = constant.
Proof Left as homework for everyone.

2 Lipschitz and Differentiability
Theorem 4 If f Lip(), it may fail to be differentiable, but if it possesses a
derivative satisfying |f 0 (x)| M then f Lip(1).
In order to be differentiable,
f (x) f (x0 )
lim = f 0 (x0 )
x x x0
By the Mean Value Theorem,
|f (x) f (y)|
= |f 0 (c)|, c (x, y)
|x y|
Now if
|f 0 (x)|
exsits and is bounded by M , then
|f (x) f (y)| M |x y|
