A Quick Guide to Publish Thecus NAS on Internet

1. Overview
Thecus Technical Support stuff may need to logic the NAS for checking system. Therefore we
need your help to publish your NAS on the internet.

2. Setup Thecus NAS on Internet

There are many ways to publish your Thecus NAS on Internet. No matter you have public fix
IP or dynamic IP, we would recommend you connecting your NAS to an IP router. One of the
most benefits is IP router is also a simple firewall itself and could interdict most internet
attacks. Secondary, no matter you are using ADSL, ISDN, HTTB, Ethernet, or Cable Modem,
you only need to modify your IP routers setting and it is no necessary to do modify on NAS.
After you connecting Thecus NAS to IP router, there are two easy ways to publish it on
internet, one is DMZ and another is port forwarding.

2-1 Demo with DD-WRT

DD-WRT is a famous open source firmware for Router, here we use an IP router with
DD-WRT for demo.

Configuration of the Thecus NAS

 WAN: 192.168.1.100
 LAN: 192.168.2.254
Connect WAN to your IP router.

2-1-1 Setup DMZ for Thecus NAS

In computer security, a demilitarized zone, named after the military usage of the
term and normally abbreviated to DMZ. The purpose of a DMZ is to add an
additional layer of security to an organization's Local Area Network (LAN); an
external attacker only has access to equipment in the DMZ, rather than the whole of
the network.

In IP router, the only setting is in DMZ session, fill in IP (192.168.1.100) and apply
setting. This is the easiest way, however, we WONT suggest user to setup NAS as
DMZ for security issue. We would like recommend as by port forwarding.

2-1-2 Setup Port Forwarding for Thecus NAS

Setup port forwarding function in IP router, we need to open a TCP port 22 & 80 &
443 to NAS WAN IP.

2-2 Demo with Tomato

Tomato is another famous open source firmware for router. Here we have a demo with
Tomato 1.28 firmware.

forwarding settings and get easy to setup. Here we have WNR3500L for demo.

Configuration of the Thecus NAS

3. Tell us your public IP

3-1 Determine the public IP of your router

Here is a tick that you may acquire your public IP quickly. Please connect to
http://whatismyipaddress.com/ by using browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Firefox, and then you may acquire your public IP very soon.

3-2 Dynamic IP and apply your Dynamic DNS

If you have a dynamic IP, that means the IP may change very soon, and it will lead
network disconnection. Thecus Support would only connect to your device after you tell
us the new IP. Therefore, you may apply a dynamic hostname to resolve it.

We suggest two DDNS provider,

www.no-ip.com
www.ddns.org

Here is a screen shot of www.no-ip.com, you may apply an free account.
