Answer THREE questions

All questions carry equal marks

A data sheet is provided on page 6.

1. Figure Q1 shows a frame structure which has pin supports at A and D. The relative
values of EI for the members of the frame are shown in the figure.

(a) Member BC carries a uniformly distributed load of 18kN/m as shown in the

figure. Draw the bending moment diagram for the frame showing all important
values.
[12 marks]

(b) If a horizontal load of 10kN acting from left to right is added at B, determine the
horizontal deflection of B in terms of EI.
[8 marks]

(c) If the horizontal load of 10kN mentioned in (b) is removed from the frame and the
rigid joint at B is replaced by a pin, by how much will the maximum bending
moment in member BC be changed? Sketch the deflected shape of the frame.
[8 marks]

(d) If the uniformly distributed load in part (a) is a dead load, determine the value of
EI if the transverse natural frequency of the frame, with the rigid joint at B, is not
to be less than 20Hz. State any assumptions made.

2. The rigid jointed frame structure shown in Figure Q2 has pin supports at A and D and
the members have the relative values of EI shown in the figure.

(a) Ignoring axial load effects, derive the stiffness equations which may be used to
determine the unknown displacements of the frame. DO NOT SOLVE THE
EQUATIONS.
[23 marks]

(b) Produce an expression for the bending moment at B in member BC in terms of the
displacements of the frame.

3. (a) Determine the plastic moment capacity for the cross-section shown in
Figure Q3(a), when it is bent with neutral axis parallel to the flange. The yield
stress of the material is 275 N/mm2 in both tension and compression.
[8 marks]

(b) The frame in Figure Q3(b) is subjected to loads V and H as shown. The members
of the frame have uniform plastic moment capacity. Neglect the reduction of full
plastic moment capacity due to axial load in the member.

(i) Sketch on a graph of V versus H the load combinations that are just
sufficient to cause collapse, and define the region of safe combinations of
these loads.
[18 marks]

(ii) If V = H = 50 kN, what is the load factor against collapse?

[2 marks]

(iii) Discuss briefly the nature of the collapse mechanism for V = H.

4. (a) Using von Misess failure theory show that the interaction between bending stress
and shear stress on a cross-section can be expressed as
2 + 32 = 2y
where is the bending stress, is the shear stress and y is the yield stress in
uni-axial tension.
[12 marks]

(b) The I-section shown in Figure Q4(a), is subjected to a shear force of 300 kN.
Assuming that the shear is carried primarily by the web, calculate the plastic
bending moment capacity of the section about the y-axis. The yield stress of the
material is 275 N/mm2 in both tension and compression.
[9 marks]

(c) A uniform rectangular slab as shown in Figure Q4(b), is isotropically reinforced

with bottom and top reinforcement such that the yield moment of resistance is m
per unit length for bending about any axis. The slab is fully fixed along all four
edges.

(i) Determine the required value of m if the slab is to collapse by a fan

mechanism under a uniformly distributed load of q per unit area, and a
heavy point load Q at the centre.
[8 marks]

(ii) What happens if either q or Q is absent?
