Jose Rizals Grand Tour of Europe with Maximo Viola:

Their visit coincided with the regional floral exposition. The floral exposition greatly pleased Rizal for he was interested in Botany.

They visited Dr. Adolph Meyer, who was overjoyed to see them. Rizal was deeply impressed by painting of Prometheus Bound
at the museum of the art.

They met Dr. Jagor at the scene of the floral exposition. They planned to visit Leitmeritz (now Litomerice, Czech Republic) and
Dr. Jagor heard them. The doctor advised them to wire Blumentritt of their coming because the old professor might suffer a
shock at their sudden visit.

Rizal and Viola sent a wire to Blumentritt after leaving Dresden.

May 13, 1887 at 1:30 pm, they arrived at the railroad station of Leimeritz, Bohemia. Professor Blumentritt warmly received Rizal
and Viola.

The two great scholars meet each other personally and they greeted each other in fluent German. Upon seeing the talented
Rizal for the first time, Professor Blumentritt immediately took him into heart, and loved him as a son. They were introduced to
the family of the great professor Blumentritt.

They stayed in Leitmeritz from May 13-16, 1887.

Republic Rizal and Viola enjoyed the hospitality of the Blumentritts family. Professor Blumentritt himself, served as the tourist guide for
the two Filipinos. One afternoon, they were invited to a beer garden. They met the burgomaster (chief magistrate) of that town
and they were proudly introduced by Blumentritt.

Another one afternoon, Rizal and Viola were invited to a meeting of the Tourists Club of Leitmeritz. Rizal praised Austrias idyllic
scenes and its hospitable, nature-loving, and noble people. Rizal met Dr. Carlos Czepelack, the renowned scientist of Europe
and he was introduced to Professor Robert Klutschak, an eminent naturalist.

Rizal and Viola met Dr. Willkomm, a professor of natural history in the University of Prague
Prague,
Czech Together with Dr. Willkomm and his daughters, Rizal and Viola visited historic sites in Prague like the tomb of the astronomer,
Republic Nicolas Copernicus.

According to Viola, nothing of importance happened in this city

Rizal and Viola arrived in the Hungary (capital of Austria) on May 20, 1887

Vienna, Rizal considered Vienna as the Queen of Danube because of its beautiful buildings, religious images, haunting waltzes and

In Vienna, Rizal received his lost diamond stickpin. It was found by a maid in Hotel Krebs and was given to Blumentritt, who, in
turn, forwarded it to Rizal in Vienna

In Munich, Rizal and Viola sojourned for a short time to savor the famous Munich beer, reputed to be the best in Germany

From Ulm, they went to Stuttgart, Baden and then Rheinfall (Cascade of the Rhine). At Rheinfall, they saw the most beautiful

On June 19, 1887, Rizal treated Viola to a blow-out. It was his 26th birthday

On June 23, 1887, Viola and Rizal parted waysViola returned to Barcelona while Rizal continued the tour to Italy
While Rizal and Viola were touring Europe, they received a sad news about an exposition being held in Madrid wherein primitive
Igorots of Northern Luzon was exhibited and whose scanty clothing and crude weapons became objects of ridicule. Rizal was
outraged by this degradation of his fellow Countrymen.

While in Italy, Rizal visited Turin, Milan, Venice, and Florence.

He reached Rome on June 27, 1887. He was thrilled by the sights and memories of his stay at Rome, the Eternal City.

On June 29, Rizal visited the Vatican City for the first time.
