Probability and Statistics Syllabus

Fall 2017

Course Description: Students will explore topics such as: data classification, descriptive
statistics, measures of central tendency, measures of variation, measures of position, probability
distributions, binomial distributions, normal distributions, finding probabilities and values for
normal distributions.

Requirements and Materials: Each student is expected to bring a pencil and a notebook to
every class session. We will be using Larson and Farber Elementary Statistics Picturing the
World textbook. Periodically we will be using calculators in conjunction with the textbook. It
is strongly recommended that each student have a scientific calculator (TI-30 or equivalent).

Participation: In order to be successful in my class you must work. Your grade will be
affected negatively for being unprepared and not working in class. Appropriate action will be
taken for not utilizing class time wisely, disrupting class, using foul language, and disrupting
quizzes or tests. Respect and responsibility are the prime tenets of my classroom. Make sure
you are connected to your grades through student/parent connect.

Grading scale: Grades will be calculated in the following manner.

Tests 40%
Quizzes 25%
Graded assignments 25%
Classwork/notebook 10%

Notebooks: Each student is expected to keep a notebook that will contain their daily do now
and notes as well as their class work.

Attendance: You are expected to attend classes daily. If you miss class time you are missing
instruction and practice. It becomes harder to pass this class the more days you are absent.

Make-Up Work/Re-do: If you are absent, you will be allowed one day for each day absent to
make up any work missed IF the absence was excused. Re-do for work will be limited to two
weeks after the original assignment. If an assignment is not turned in a grade of zero will be
given.

Discipline: Students are encouraged to follow the student code of conduct as prescribed by the
administration and school board on a daily basis.

Cell phone policy: The cellphone policy states cell phones are to be out of sight and silent
during class unless they are being used for educational purposes as directed by the teacher. If a
student is abusing this policy their cellphone will be turned over to security.
