Dear Elementary School Parents, concerns.
The first week back has been busy with classes coming through and checking
out their books. The most popular authors so far have been Roald Dahl and
Geronimo Stilton.
We’ve had several volunteer parents come and sign on to help out in the library. If you are a new or
old parent and have some time to help out, we’d love to see you! You can sign on for a regular time or
you can just drop in when you have a little spare time.
Parents can borrow up to 10 items so feel free to come in and browse our shelves for books, magazines
and DVD’s that you or your children may find interesting.
Happy reading,
Pat Hallinan
ES Librarian
RECESS SUCCESS!
The Physical Education team has two green boxes in the ES Plaza with sports equipment for children to use during their play
time. It has jump ropes, (short, long and Double Dutch ropes) balls of many sizes and shapes and Frisbees. ECLC – Grade 4
children are allowed to borrow equipment. They need to hand in their school ID to a supervisor who is stationed at the recess
green boxes. At the end of play when children return the borrowed equipment they will be given back their school ID. This sys-
tem helps students be responsible. We continue to emphasize that all sports equipment be used safely and properly. You can
assist us as parents by playing jump rope with your children, (teaching them Jump Rope Chants) throwing a Frisbee, or simply
playing throw and catch with a ball. Our purpose is to encourage children to be active, learn safe behaviors when using sports
equipment and be responsible.

Malaria is generally not a significant problem in urban areas but there has been increased concern recently about a number of cases
reported in the Philippine provinces. Our advice is to seek information on the risk of malaria if you are travelling out of town. This is
best done at least a month before your trip so that you can take anti malaria medication if necessary.
Tuberculosis is a common disease in the Philippines and up to 60% of Philippine nationals will test positive for TB exposure. We rec-
ommend that you ask your helpers, yayas, drivers etc. to be tested for TB before you employ them and again if they show any signs of
TB such as a persistent cough, fever, weight loss etc. (we can provide you with a complete list of symptoms if you wish). Anyone in
close contact with the family should be checked to ensure that your family is protected.
If you would like any further information on any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic or your own doctor. A few
useful websites are: http://www.wpro.who.int/health_topics http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/philippines.aspx http://
www.doh.gov.ph/
On a separate issue, it may be good to take this opportunity to advise you of the medication policy in School. If your child needs to take
medication during the school day, please advise the clinic. Your child may carry one day’s worth of medication with them to take as
prescribed but no more than that. If you wish the medication to be given in the clinic, please bring the medication and copy of prescrip-
tion to the clinic and sign an authorization form for us to administer the medication. All medicines should be clearly labeled with the
child’s name and dosage details. Medication for Elementary School children should always be deposited with the Clinic where it will be
administered according to prescription.
Sorry to get down to business so early in the year but we aim to work together with you and your families to keep the children at ISM
healthy and able to make the very best of all the learning opportunities available to them. Finally, we wish the children and their fami-
lies a very happy, healthy and successful year at ISM.

The PreK-12 Guidance Department is excited to announce the first Parent Book Group of the 2010-11 school year. The
book we will be reading over this 10 week course is NurtureShock, written by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. In-
stead of telling you what this book is about, we invite you to look at the NurtureShock website http://
www.nurtureshock.com/ , to browse the articles and watch the videos, and decide if this looks like something you or
someone you know might be interested in. The group will begin on Thursday, September 2 and tentatively meet every
Thursday that school is in session until late November. Each session will begin at 8 am and finish around
10. NurtureShock is appropriate for parents with children of all ages. Interested parties please contact Myrna Perez in
the Elementary School Guidance Office to add your name to the list. In the past these groups have been very popular
and fill up almost as soon as they are announced. Spaces are limited and are on a first come first serve basis. Partici-
pants will need to acquire their own copy of the book by the second meeting. It is available locally or through Amazon.
