Description: The Woodcock Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Skills (WJ III COG) updates and expands the WJR Tests of Cognitive
Ability(WJRCOG)andisdesignedtomeasuregeneralandspecificcognitivefunctions.TheotherbatterytheWJIIIACHisdesignedto
identifyanddescribeanindividualscurrentstrengthsandweaknesses.Whenthesetwobatteriesareadministeredtogether,theyallowthe
tester to investigate overunderachievement and to examine patterns of intraindividual discrepancies among cognitive or achievement
areas.ThebatteriesoftheWJIIICOGandWJIIIACHarefurtherclassifiedasstandardorextended.Newtests,clustersandinterpretive
procedureshavebeenaddedwiththeintensionofimprovingthediagnosticpoweroftheinstrumentandincreasingthebreadthanddepth
of coverage. The clusters are grouped into three cognitive areas, Verbal Ability, Thinking Ability, and Cognitive Efficiency. Oral
languagetestshavebeenmovedtotheWJIIIACH.
Scoring:Requiresscoringduringtestingtodeterminebasalandceilinglevels.Rawscoresaretotaledandconvertedintoageandgrade
equivalents,percentileranks,anddiscrepancyscoreswithuseoftheScoringTables.CompuscoreandProfilesProgramareusedforall
other scoring. The WJ III COG provides two indices of general cognitive functioning (i.e., intelligence) by means of the General
IntellectualAbility(GIA)scoreandtheBriefIntellectualAbility(BIA)score.
Reliability:ThemedianreliabilitycoefficientalphasforallagegroupsforthestandardbatteryoftheWJIIICOGfortests1through10
rangedfrom.81to.94.FortheExtendedbattery,mediancoefficientsrangedfrom.74to.97.ThereliabilityscoresfortheWJIIImeetor
exceedstandards.Themedianclusterreliabilitiesaremostly.90orhigher,andtheindividualtestreliabilitiesaremostly.80orhigher,and
canbeusedfordecisionmakingpurposeswithsupportfromothersources.
Validity:Thetechnicalmanualpresentsaconsiderableamountofevidencesupportingthevalidityofscoresfromthetest,notingthatthe
earlierversionsofthebatteryhavealsobeenshowntohavevalidity.TestcontentontheWJIIICOGhasemergedfrompreviousversions,
issimilartothecontentfoundonotherwellestablishedcognitivemeasures,orisbasedonsoundexperimentalinstruments.

Norms: The normative samples (preschool, school aged, college and adult) were selected to be representative of the US population,
basedongeographicdistribution,communitysizeandtype,andSES,occupationalstatus,sex,race.
Suggesteduse:TheWJIIITestsofCognitiveAbilityhasusesforeducational,clinicalorresearchpurposes.Asadiagnostictool,itcan
determinespecificstrengthsandweaknesses,andcanhelpassociatecertainfactorsonfuturedevelopment.Intraability,intraindividual
andability/achievementdiscrepanciescanbeusefulindeterminingtheexistenceofspecificdisabilities,andinselectionforLDprograms.
Thetestresultsmaybehelpfulinseducationalprogramming,individualprogramplanning,guidance,inassessinggrowth,inresearchand
