For the first test, my results said I was a visual learner. Visual learners remember what
they read or write, they enjoy visual projects, and they understand information best when they
SEE it. The visual learner remembers 75% of what they read or see. Generally, global visual
learners will process iconic (pictorial) information before reading the printed text. For an ELL
student, this learning style could be very helpful because they will be able to remember pictures
and words easily. An important addition to the classroom would be signs with decorative
pictures so these students can remember the words associated with the picture.
The next text revealed that I was a Conceptual learner. This means that I prefer to work
with language and ideas; for conceptual learner, practical applications are not necessary for
understanding. Conceptual learners learn best by organizing materials that lack order, use
outlining, and focusing on organizational patterns. This learning style could be helpful to an ELL
student because they could organize material into graphic organizers to learn new words. As a
teacher adding graphic organizers would not only help the ELL student but other students with
The third test concluded that I am a spatial learner, which means I can visualize or
"mentally see" how things work or how they are positioned in space. Spatial learners strengths
may include drawing, assembling things or repairing. Spatial learners may use learning strategies
like mapping, outlining, drawing diagrams, making charts or sketches. If an ELL student was
also a spatial learner the student, it could be helpful because this learning style is very visual and
they could use this method to learn new material. A teacher could instruct an ELL student to
The fourth test indicated that I am a social learner, which means I prefer to work with
others closely and directly. Strategies of social learner include study groups, studying with a
partner, interacting with my professors, working with a tutor, and taking classes with a
discussion format. This learning style could be helpful for an ELL student because social
interaction is necessary for language acquisition. ELL students could use this social time to
practice and improve their language skills, therefore a teacher could use a pair and share tactic
to encourage this.
The last test stated that I am a creative learner, meaning that I prefer to learn through
discovery or experimentation. Creative learners are known for being comfortable with taking
risks and following hunches. This learning style would be helpful to an ELL because they will be
willing to try and practice learning a new language. By being open to experimenting and taking
risks; they could be more successful in their transition to new school and environment.
