Dormammu v1

By KalEl el Vigilante

Source of Character: Marvel Comics

Helper(s): Brian Mendus, Peter S. Piispanen, Pavone Bianco, Frank Murdock, Wikipedia,
eumreborn.com, Norseman Central, Marvunapp, Marvel.com, www.drstrange.nl (from
where the History section was taken) and

from rapsheet.co.uk

Reasons (1): Added Invulnerability on top of high Body and the special Regeneration to
account for the chance of a heavy hitter running into Dormammu. "Trans dimensional"
has a different meaning as a Bonus in the BoH:SE, so I changed the naming of the
Telepathy Bonus. It seems like Dormammu can teleport through galaxies without needing
to change to a different dimension: it feels like Teleport is a power he really has (the
current number would allow to travel 500 million light years in a single jump).

Reasons (2): See our popular Short Guide to Magic in the Marvel Universe article for
Sorcerer Supreme rules and the like.

The flames of Regency:

The ruler of the Dark Dimension wear a plume of mystic fire around his head called "the
Flames of Regency". It's unknown if Dormammu's Sorcerer Supreme Magic Rank and
this "regency" are related or not, and thus we suppose the hindrances of losing each are
different. In this case, Dormammu's Loss Vulnerability would activate and he would lose
his Flame Being Power, that would go to the new Regent.

Dark Dimension to the Earth Plane and back:

Dormammu can only cross to the Earth Plane under very special conditions and if
banished from there he can't return in a long while (usually requiring help to do so). It is
in fact the way that Dormammu is usually defeated: he is banished.
Powerful friends:
The Mystic Entities listed as connections for Dormammu will add a bonus to the casting,

History:

Dormammu and Umar where faltinians with a fascination towards matter. This
fascination is almost regarded as a crime in the dimension of Faltine where energy and
magic is all, and matter is regarded as an unhealthy waste. They revolted against their
sole creator Sinifer; as a result the faltinians banded together and banished the rogue duo.
They sought sanctuary from Olnar, the wizard-king of the Dark Dimension, a small
pocket cosmos in a dimension other than Earth's, in which the laws of reality are different
from those in the Earth dimension (it has been speculated that thisoccured thousands of
years ago). Dormammu and Umar promised to show Olnar how to expand his realm.
Intrigued, Olnar overruled the objections of the other wizards of his realm, who distrusted
the two exiles, and he granted Dormammu and Umar not only sanctuary but also
positions of power. In return, the two Faltinians showed Olnar how to break down inter-
dimensional barriers and to absorb other pocket dimensions into his own.

However, after many ears of such conquests, it was discovered that a pocket cosmos that
had recently been added to the Dark Dimension was the home of the savage creatures
called the Mindless Ones. The Mindless Ones spread destruction throughout the Dark
Dimension and killed Olnar. The surviving wizards blamed the two Faltinians.
Suspecting that the wizards would attack the two of them, Dormammu and Umar struck
first and defeated the wizards. The two Faltinians then combined their magic to imprison
the Mindless Ones behind a mystic barrier that still exists today. The people of the Dark
Dimension acclaimed Dormammu and Umar for saving them from the Mindless Ones
and chose them as regents of the Dark Dimension. The take-over had cost them both a lot
of energy which left Umar very weak, making Dormammu the acting ruler.
Dormammu transformed himself into pure mystical energy, thus enabling him to use his
vast magical powers more efficiently. He placed a spell upon the remaining few wizards
that rendered them incapable of speech, setting them to wander the dimension as outcasts.
Dormammu had no intention of sharing his throne with Olnar's rightful heir, the young
Orini, but raised him as his ward. Orini became Dormammu's loyal disciple.

For an unknown number of Earth centuries, Dormammu has sought to conquer the Earth
dimension. He has always been frustrated by the Sorcerer's Supreme of the Earth
dimension, each of whom has used the Amulet of Agamotto as a weapon against him.
Then Dormammu, now a long time enemy of the Ancient One, met Dr. Strange in battle
for the first time. He allied himself with baron Mordo against Dr. Strange but Mordo was
defeated. Thus he had to do battle himself. He summoned various lords of the
netherworlds to witness his battle with Strange, but this time he was defeated. Some time
later Dormammu encountered Eternity who he engaged in combat. Eternity, of course,
defeated the out-leagued Dormammu.

When Dormammu struck back, he captured Clea and Victoria Bentley. They were both
saved by Dr. Strange. After this incident, Dormammu became ruler of the Dykkors, and
battled Strange again. Again Dormammu had to retreat to the Dark Dimension. He then
allied with the god Loki, and instigated the Avengers/Defenders war. He tried to use the
power of the Evil Eye to invade Earth but in doing so he betrayed Loki. Dormammu now
had to battle the Avengers and the norse god, which resulted in him being absorbed by the
Evil Eye.

But Dormammu's body reincarnated once again at the Earth's core as a giant, where he
imprisoned Gaea. He then battled the Scarlet Witch to avenge his imprisonment in the
Evil Eye and once again lost . Umar took over his rulership of the Dark Dimension.
Dormammu undertook a complex plot that involved him travelling back in time to
incarnate himself physically on Earth in the year 1943, long before his first clash with
Doctor Strange. However, Strange and Clea had journeyed back in time, too, each
contributing a way of destroying Dormammu, scattering his mystical essence throughout
a myriad of dimensions.

It was now time for a different approach ; Dormamu traveled back in time again to 1943
and took control of the body of Viscount Crowler. This almost worked but he was driven
out by Dr. Strange. Dormammu finally managed to take possession of Dr. Strange's body,
a situation that was finished by the empathic mystic Topaz.

Leaving the Earth as it was, he began a war to regain rulership over the Dark Dimension
from Clea, who was the acting regent at that time after having defeated her mother Umar.
After yet another failed invasion of Earth, Dormammu returned to the Dark Dimension.
This time he absorbed Umar and Mordo, raising his power to cosmic levels. He ended up
getting bored with the Dark Dimension and left it. But not for long... When Dormammu
is seen next , he had resumed his role as ruler of the Dark Dimension. His appearance
was once again his usual. Obviously he couldn't hold the total beings of Umar and Baron
Mordo for long. At this time Dormammu once again imprisoned his sister, Umar.
When Satannish united with Dormammu to conquer all the Hells, Daimon Hellstorm
joined with Mephisto, Pluto, Hela and Hellcat to foil this plot. During this time it was
revealed that Satannish the Supreme was in fact a spawn of Dormammu, placed in Hell at
the beginning of time. Afterwards, perhaps addled by her experiences, Patsy Walker
(Hellcat), former wife of Hellstorm, claimed that Daimon was the Son of Satannish, a
wrong conclussion that Hellstorm, seeking to keep Patsy away from the horrors of his
current life, agreed to. That would have made him a direct relative of Dormammu, Umar
and Clea, but it was after all a lie just supported by Mephisto and Hellstorm and thus
there's no real link between the Dreaded lord of the Dark Dimension and Daimon.

Description:

Dormammu is a powerful built humanoid dressed in a skintight violet suit, with red and
yellow boots, red briefs, a thick golden belt, and red gloves. His face is surrounded by
flames, but that is not really a personal power but the manifestation of his regency over
the Dark Dimension. During his assault on Eternity, his suit was green.

Personality

Dormammu is a very intelligent entity, although he is not omniscient. In fact, he tends to

rush once his usually very slowly crafted plans start running well, a rushing that tends to
forge his defeat time after time. He's also the kind of powerful, classic villain that likes to
gloat.

He comes from a dimension when energy is all and appraissal of matter is despised. He
and his sister became too materiallistic for their homeland and were exiled from it. The
relationship with his sister Umar is a complicated one: she's at the same time a trustful
ally in his conquers and a traitor that profits each of his brother's defeats to gain personal
power.

DC Universe History:

In the DC Universe, Dormammu would be a frequent for of Dr Fate and the Justice
League. His attempt to take over all Hells could have started the freezing of the main one,
an occasion Asmodel took chance of by attacking Earth in the "Day of Judgment" arc.
