MY ROOF REPAIR

JAMES L EAST, PHD

QUICK FIX FOR A SINGLE HOLE

Aluminum Sheet
Get a tube of DAP Roof Caulk and a 10 x 10 roll of Aluminum Flashing from
Lowes. The flashing is used to cut an Aluminum Sheet that will cover the roof
hole nicely. The cut will be 2 on each side of the roof hole and 4 longer than the
roof hole to fit it under the above shingle (FIG. 1).
Insert a Pry Bar under the above shingle to carefully loosen it (FIG. 2) so that the
cut Aluminum Sheet can be slide under it and properly aligned.

Place the cut Aluminum Sheet under the above loosened shingle to insure the
correct position (FIG. 3). Remove the Aluminum Sheet and place a bead of DAP
Roof Caulk to the surface of the underside of the above loosened shingle.
Then, apply a bead of DAP Roof Caulk in a square around the roof hole as shown
in FIG. 4.
Slip the Aluminum Sheet underneath the above caulked shingle and aligned over
the square-caulked roof hole (FIG. 5). Press both the Aluminum Sheet and the top
shingle firmly down to insure a good seal.
Apply a bead of DAP Roof Caulk to each side of Aluminum Sheet (FIG. 6)

Smooth the beaded DAP Roof Caulk with a Putty Knife (FIG.7).
The finished Quick Fix Roof Repair with an Aluminum Sheet is featured in FIG.

Replacement Shingle
If desired, a new replacement shingle can be put over My Roof Repair with an
Aluminum Sheet.
Cut a new shingle to fit the Aluminum Sheet area with a Utility Knife. Also using
the Utility Knife, round each top corner of this custom cut shingle to make it
easier to slide it under the top shingle.
Now, slip this custom cut shingle into place under the upper shingle.
Drive one 1.25 Galvanized Roofing Nail into each upper corner and then cover the
nail heads with DAP Roof Caulk.
Add a bead of DAP Roof Caulk across the bottom of the upper shingle and of the
new custom cut replacement shingle and press both firmly down to get a tight
seal.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I prepared this article MY ROOF REPAIR because of a severe leak I had in my attic from
an overflowing drain pan under one of the air conditioner coils. An Air Conditioning
Technician came out and repaired the problem by having to unclog both the primary
and secondary drain lines that were stopped up.
This caused an extremely bad leak in my ceiling underneath the drain pan that
resulted in a large hole in my upstairs ceiling and a lot of other ceiling damage that had
to be fixed. He also brought me the bad news that he found light coming from the roof
close to one of the air conditioning coils and that this may also have contributed to the
leak. The Air Conditioning Technician took a picture of this light with his mobile phone
and showed it to me (Fig. 9).

Sure enough, there was a light coming from the roof. We both thought that this light
was coming from a roof hole that probably occurred about 2 months before due to a
hail storm we had in my subdivision Villa Verde here in Pearland TX.
In all my years of living in houses, I have never had a roof to leak. As a result, I have no
experience in this matter. Therefore, I got busy finding out about roof leaks and how to
repair them. I started searching the web and found out there are tons of information
on this subject. Be that as it may, as a result of my search, I prepared this document MY
ROOF REPAIR.
To make a long story short, my friend Edward next door came over and gave me the
good news that the light apparently is not coming from a hole in the roof. He could not
stick a pole extender through the light that he saw coming from the attic ceiling. This
was again confirmed by the General Home Repair Contractor that came several days
later to repair the hole in the upstairs ceiling. He went up to the attic and he too saw
the light coming from the roof that was above and close to the repaired drain pan that
had been unclogged. The General Contractor went up on the roof and found no hole in
the roof. The good news is now I wont have another potentially costly repair. He also
took another picture of the light coming from the roof ceiling (Fig. 10).

I have concluded that the light must be coming from a vent pipe, venting system or
something similar. Also, there is no evidence of water having been leaked from the
roof onto the wood rafters and beams. All is dry as a bone!
By the way, when I first heard drip, drip and drip coming from upstairs and it didnt
stop, but continued, I went next door to get my friend Edward to come over and have a
look upstairs. He gladly came over and saw there was a big mess up there with water
flowing from the ceiling. He got the water from the drain pain stopped from
overflowing by turning off the downstairs air conditioner.
I might add that the reason I called on Edward in the first place is that I have had a
major heart attack and I am in the process of recovering from it. I simply cant go
upstairs by walking up the staircase. Currently, I am restricted to using a 4-wheel
walker to get to wherever I want to go. I also am able to still drive my car.
After all the work I did on preparing this paper, I thought at first it all had been done
in vain and that basically it was now useless. However, after further careful
consideration, I came to the conclusion that the writing of this report was well worth
the effort and possibly could help me at some point in the future. I have decided to put
this article MY ROOF REPAIR on my Facebook page JAMES EAST. By doing so, it perhaps
may aid others in solving the problem of leaking holes in their house roofs.
