A Father that Learn A Lesson from His Son

Once upon a time in a small village. There was a carpenter, named Velan. His mother
was dead a long time ago. His aged father, Kuppan, lived with him. Kuppan was so weak. He
could not even walk well. He was so weak. It was because Velan did not give him enough food.
Velan had given his father a small earthen plate. Even a small quantity of rice in the plate
appeared to be much. Velan was not a good man, he was a drukard too. After taking drinks, he
abused his father badly.

Velan had a son his. His name is Muthu, Muthu was just ten years old. Muthu was agod
son. He loved his grandfather. He had great respect to his grandfather. He did not like, his
fathers attitude and character, because his father was treating his grandfather cruelly.

One day, Kuppan was eating his food out of the earthen plate. Suddenly, the plate feel
down to the floor. The earthen plate broke into pieces. Velan was working at the other of the
room. And he saw the broken plate. He was very angry with his father and used very harsh
word to abuse his father. Kuppan felt really sorry for what happened. He was sorry for his
mistake. But Velan didnt want hear his father, and didnt understand how the condition of his
father is. His words wounded Kuppan so deeply.

Velans son, Muthu, saw this. He did not like his father. His father treated his
grandfather with no respect. Muthu was afraid to speak out against his father. He was really
sad to see his grandfather. But he had no powerful to support his grandfather.

In the next day, Muthu took some of his father carpentry tools and a piece of wood. He
worked with the tools to make a wooden plate. His father saw him working.

What are you doing? What are you making, Muthu? asked Velan.

I am making a wooden plate. answered Muthu.

The wooden plate? What for? asked Velan again.

I am making it for you, father. When you grow old, like my grandfather, you will need a plate
for your food. The plate from the earth may break very easily. Then I may scold you severely.
So, I want give you a wooden plate, it may not break very easily. explained Muthu.

Velan was shocked to hear this. Only now, he realized his mistake. His father was so
kind to him. He had looked after Velan very well. Now, he was old. But he treated his father
severely. Velan was very sad about his own behavior. He then became a better person.

From that day, Velan treated his father with very great respect. He gave up drinking too.
Velan learnt a lesson from his own son.

The moral value of the text is we should respect our parents, we should honor our
parents. Because it will bring you their blessing. And the blessing from our parents is the
blessing from the God.
