Technology offer

Method for the Detection of Chemical Adulterants in Synthetic Milk

The Know how offers a simple and novel process for the production of a
ready to use kit for the detection of chemical adulterants in synthetic
milk. The kit is portable and useful for the detection of urea, caustic
soda and detergents. The kit can be readily used at household and in
the field with much ease. Detection time of the kit is very less and
instant results can be obtained on the addition of the reagents to the
specimen milk. The shelf life of the kit is six months when kept at room
temperature. Its advantage over other currently available kits is that it is
cost effective and while using it does not require any sophisticated
instruments.

Synthetic milk is actually not milk but it is entirely a different component with a high degree of
adulteration to increase the volume of milk and thereby the profit. Generally it is a mixture of water,
pulverized detergent or soap, sodium hydroxide, vegetable oil, salt and urea.

The simplicity and rapidity with which milk can be adulterated always
tempted the unscrupulous milk vendors to indulge in fraudulent practices
and adulterate the milk. The ever rising greed has given way to the
development of a new type of adulterated milk known as synthetic milk.
Similar to genuine milk production, the practice of preparing the synthetic
milk too starts at the village level. The places known for the production of
synthetic milk include parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan in
India. Slowly but steadily the practice is spreading to other parts of
India.
Keeping in view, the recently emerging concern of the adulteration of the Preliminary Test to confirm
natural milk with the synthetic milk, NRDC has come up with a ready to Adulteration in Pure Milk
use kit for the detection of chemical adulterants in synthetic milk. An
Indian patent has been granted for this invention.

Advantages

Kit can detect Urea (upto 20ppm), Detergent (upto

0.002%) and baking soda (any amount) in the
adulterated milk
In the field, urea and baking soda can be detected
easily, however for detergent detection warming (40-
50C) of the sample is required.
Can be used easily in villages
No special technical knowledge is required for its use
Results are indicated by change of milk Colour which Detection of different concentrations of
can be easily visualized Urea in Adulterated Milk
No equipment is required
Shelf Life of Kit is six months at room temperature
