Analysing a Prose

Look close to tone, voice, mood, purpose, point of view, character presentation
and setting

Chronology

how time is handled

Is the story described chronically? E.g. forward to the future, flashback to
the past
Does the time continue?
Why is it handled this way?

Narrative point of view: whose eyes the writer has chosen to write his or her
story

Why does the author choose a certain point view? Is it first person
narration, third person narration or the omniscient author?

First person narration

character that is invented to tell the story

Effect: -the readers can feel towards a particular character and hence
causes
the readers to sympathise with the character
-Allows readers to know the characteristics of a character
through
actions and thoughts.
Disadvantage: -narrative is limited in only one area

Third person narration

outside the narrative; often refer to him or her

Distance between the reader and the character is greater
Can look into the character more critically
give flexibility in the writing
The omniscient author

Writer is in the position

Can know everything about every character and every event

The intrusive author

Readers have to imagine from the description of the surroundings etc.
Effect: increase the readers intimacy with writier

Narrative techniques

Direct interior monologue: give the thoughts and feelings of the

characters
Narrated interior monologues: Give actual thoughts through third person
and past tense

Characterisation

Analysing characters: * A direct statement about the character by the

omniscient author
* An account of the character action
* What the character says
* The physical appearance of the character
* What the character tells you about others
* How other people respond to the character
both when
they are present and when they are not
* How the character develops or changes
during the course of the passage
* Your own reaction to the characters actions
and attitudes
Setting

What effect that setting has on the overall achievement of the passage
