1. Scope
Theworkconsistsoftheconstructionofrockfillzonesofembankmentsandotherrockfills
requiredbythedrawingsandspecifications,includingbeddingwherespecified.
2. Material
Materialforrockfillandbeddingshallbeobtainedfromthespecifiedsourcesunlessotherwise
specifiedinsection10ofthisspecification.Thematerialshallbeexcavated,selected,processed,
andhandledasnecessarytoconformtothespecifiedgradationrequirements.
3. Foundationpreparation
Foundationsforrockfillshallbestrippedtoremovevegetationandotherunsuitablematerialor
shallbeexcavatedasspecified.
Exceptasotherwisespecified,earthfoundationsurfacesshallbegradedtoremovesurface
irregularities,andtestpitsorothercavitiesshallbefilledwithcompactedearthfillof
approximatelythesamekindanddensityastheadjacentfoundationmaterial.
Rockfoundationsurfacesshallbeclearedofallloosematerialnotconformingtothe
specificationsfortherockfill.
Abutmentsforrockfillzonesofembankmentsshallbepreparedasspecifiedabovefor
foundations.
Rockfilland/orbeddingshallnotbeplaceduntilthefoundationpreparationiscompletedandthe
foundationandexcavationshavebeeninspectedandapproved.
4. Bedding
Whenabeddinglayerbeneathrockfillisspecified,thebeddingmaterialshallbespread
uniformlyonthepreparedsubgradesurfacestothedepthindicated.Compactionofthebedding
materialshallbeasspecifiedinsection10ofthisspecification.
5. Placement
Method1Therockshallbedumpedandspreadintopositioninapproximatelyhorizontal
layersnottoexceed3feetinthickness.Itshallbeplacedtoproduceareasonablyhomogeneous
stablefillthatcontainsnosegregatedpocketsoflargeorsmallfragmentsorlargeunfilledspaces
causedbybridgingofthelargerrockfragments.
Method2Therockshallbedumpedandspreadintopositioninapproximatelyhorizontal
layersnottoexceed3feetinthickness.Therockshallbeplacedsothatthecompletedfillshall
begradedwiththesmallerrockfragmentsplacedintheinnerportionoftheembankmentandthe
largerrockfragmentsplacedontheouterslopes.Rockshallbeplacedtoproduceastablefillthat
containsnolargeunfilledspacescausedbybridgingofthelargerfraction.

6. Controlofmoisture
Themoisturecontentofrockfillmaterialshallbecontrolledasspecifiedinsection10ofthis
specification.Whentheadditionofwaterisrequired,itshallbeappliedinamannertoavoid
excessivewettingofadjacentearthfill.Exceptasspecifiedinsection10ofthisspecification,
controlofthemoisturecontentisnotrequired.
Themoisturecontentofthebeddingmaterialshallbecontrolledtoensurethatbulkingofthe
sandmaterialsdoesnotoccurduringcompactionoperations.
7. Compactionofrockfill
Rockfillshallbecompactedasdescribedbelowfortheclassofcompactionspecifiedorbyan
approvedequivalentmethod.
ClassIcompactionEachlayeroffillshallbecompactedbyatleastfourpassesovertheentire
surfacewithasteeldrumvibratingrollerthatweighsatleast5tonsandexertingavertical
vibratingforceofnotlessthan20,000poundsatafrequencynotlessthan1,200timesper
minute.
ClassIIcompactionEachlayeroffillshallbecompactedbyatleastfourpassesovertheentire
surfacebyatrackofacrawlertypetractorweighingatleast20tons.
ClassIIIcompactionNocompactionisrequiredbeyondthatresultingfromtheplacingand
spreadingoperations.
Heavyequipmentshallnotbeoperatedwithin2feetofanystructure.Vibratingrollersshallnot
beoperatedwithin5feetofanystructure.Compactionbymeansofdropweightsoperatingfrom
acrane,hoist,orsimilarequipmentisnotpermitted.
WhencompactionotherthanClassIIIcompactionisspecified,rockfillplacedintrenchesor
otherlocationsinaccessibletoheavyequipmentshallbecompactedbymanuallycontrolled
pneumaticorvibratingtampersorbyequivalentmethodsapprovedbytheengineer.
8. Compactionofbedding
BeddingshallbecompactedaccordingtothefollowingrequirementsfortheClassofcompaction
specified:
ClassAcompactionEachlayerofbeddingshallbecompactedtoarelativedensityofnotless
than70percentasdeterminedbyASTMMethodD4254.
ClassIcompactionEachlayerofbeddingshallbecompactedbyatleasttwopassesoverthe
entiresurfacewithasteeldrumvibratingrollerweighingatleast5tonsandexertingavertical
vibratingforcenotlessthan20,000poundsatafrequencynotlessthan1,200timesperminute,
oranapprovedequivalentmethod.
ClassIIcompactionEachlayerofbeddingshallbecompactedbyoneofthefollowing
methodsorbyanequivalentmethodapprovedbytheengineer:
a. Atleasttwopassesovertheentiresurfacewithpneumaticrubbertiredrollerexertinga

minimumpressureof75poundspersquareinch.Apassisdefinedasatleastonepassage
oftherollerwheel,track,tire,ordrumovertheentiresurfaceofthebeddinglayer.
b. Atleastfourpassesovertheentiresurfacewiththetrackofacrawlertypetractor
weighingaminimumof20tons.
c. Controlledmovementofthehaulingequipmentsothattheentiresurfaceistraversedbya
minimumofonetreadtrackoftheloadedequipment.
ClassIIIcompactionNocompactionisrequiredbeyondthatresultingfromtheplacingand
spreadingoperations.
Heavyequipmentshallnotbeoperatedwithin2feetofanystructure.Vibratingrollersshallnot
beoperatedwithin5feetofanystructure.Compactionbymeansofdropweightsoperatingfrom
acrane,hoist,orsimilarequipmentisnotpermitted.
WhencompactionotherthanClassIIIisspecified,beddingplacedintrenchesorotherlocations
inaccessibletoheavyequipmentshallbecompactedbymanuallycontrolledpneumaticor
vibratingtampersorbyequivalentmethodsapprovedbytheengineer.
9. Measurementandpayment
Foritemsofworkforwhichspecificunitpricesareestablishedinthecontract,thevolumeof
eachtypeofrockfill,includingbedding,withthezoneboundariesandlimitsspecifiedonthe
drawingsorestablishedbytheengineerismeasuredandcomputedtothenearestcubicyardby
themethodofaveragecrosssectionalendareas.
Paymentforeachtypeofrockfillismadeatthecontractunitpriceforthattypeoffill.Exceptas
otherwisespecifiedinsection10ofthisspecification,suchpaymentwillconstitutefull
compensationforalllabor,equipment,material,andallotheritemsnecessaryandincidentalto
theperformanceoftheworkincludingfurnishing,placing,andcompactingthebeddingmaterial.
Compensationforanytypeofworkdescribedinthecontract,butnotlistedinthebidscheduleis
includedinthepaymentfortheitemofworktowhichitismadesubsidiary.Suchitemsandthe
itemstowhichtheyaremadesubsidiaryareidentifiedinsection10ofthisspecification.
