Action Research Project: Improving

participation in class of a Group of

5th year Students from a Primary
School in Hualpn.

Yohanna Arroyo Chvez.

Introduction
Focus on Warm up Activities.
The performance of 5th year students from the EFL classes at
Centro Educacional Evangelico Hualpencillo was analyzed in
participation during sessions.
In the subject called Ingls
In this subject, students are required to participate actively
and complete different types of exercises which are aligned to
the A1 level according to the CEFR or Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages.
Some of the students keep silent all the time in class. They do
not want to participate speaking English.
Warm up activities will help these students to improve their
participation in order to raise energy and get less inhibited
students.
Theoretical Framework

WHAT IS CLASS PARTICIPATION?

Class participation can be defined as the act of taking
part in some action or attempt. It is often equated with
discussion, which typically involves a lengthy
conversation with the whole class. However,
participation can also include short exchanges between
instructors and students, or within small groups of
students. Wade (1994) considered the ideal class
discussion as one in which all students were
participating, learning, and listening to others ideas,
comments, and questions.
Theoretical Framework

WHAT ARE WARM-UP ACTIVITIES?

A warm up activity is a short ten-minutes, fun game
which a teacher or trainer can use with students. The
purpose of a warm up is to encourage the students,
wake them up when they are a little sleepy, prepare
them to learn by stimulating their minds and/or their
bodies. Warm ups should last about 5-10 minutes. Warm
ups are particularly useful to help new students or
trainees to get to know each other, to mark the shift
when students have finished learning about one topic
before starting on a new topic.
Types of warm up activities

To play games
(20 Questions, Telephone, Stop game,
Fact or Fiction, one minute mysteries)
simple puzzles, group spelling, scrambled
events, list statements, talk shows, circle
stories, quiz bowls tournaments, board
games.
Methodology
The problem of low participation and use of their mother tongue of
these students has raised because of two main factors:
Type of activities, and The Circumstances the Ss practiced. / Neither
icebreakers nor warm up activities.

Research Question:
If my students are given warm up activities,
will my students feel more motivated to
participate actively and eagerly in classes?
