The above described materials and equipment were selected based on our belief that these products provide a
combination of cost effectiveness, quality, and versatility that will serve the staff and school leaders of Cherokee
County Schools. The County is in desperate need of a learning lab for teachers and school leaders. Since the
majority of the student value-add comes from teachers, it is of utmost importance that those same teachers
have the best and most innovative facility for professional development and training. Our design will empower
teachers and school leaders to develop and practice the most innovative teaching and learning practices. The
goal of the redesign is to enhance student learning and achievement by enhancing the professional
development and teaching practices of teachers and school leaders.
Currently, the school system in Cherokee County has a 1:1 Chromebooks policy, which enables each student to
have their own computer. In previous years, a Cyber Campus was used as a computer lab for students and for
distance learning classes. Since teachers in Cherokee County no longer need the computer lab and students now
meet in the Media Center for their class time, we decided to renovate a space and design a learning studio. This
renovated space will empower staff and leaders in Cherokee County to develop professionally and refine their
craft. This space will allow for design of and practice with innovative pedagogical strategies, emerging
technology, and divergent teaching practices.
The studio is centrally located in Cherokee County and is already outfitted with a projector and Smart Board. The
main upgrades will be in new technology, paint, furniture, and a remodeled kitchen area (See Layout above).
The studio design features state of the art equipment including: Dell Computer OptiPlex 7440 All-in-One; Balt
Rectangular Flipper Flip-Top Training Table; Logitech R400 Wireless Laser Pointer and Presenter; Quartet
Standard Whiteboard; Adjustable Height Corner L-Desk; Pro Digital System with IR Speakers and Lesson Capture;
Pro Computer Webcam with Dual Stereo Microphones; Sherwin Williams paint in a soothing grey color; Break
Room Cabinets/Storage with Coffee Maker, Microwave, and Refrigerator; and Stainless Steel Double-Basin Drop-
In 4-Hole Commercial Sink.
The design features furniture that offers ease of movement, durability, and cost effectiveness. The chairs are
lightweight and may be easily moved by staff with special mobility needs. It was important that our studio be
handicap accessible. The studio is also outfitted with Wi-Fi and a webcam allows for teleconferencing.
Tables and chairs were selected based on their ease of movement and versatility. They are made from sturdy,
yet lightweight material, so that they may be easily moved by one or two people for equipment cleaning and
maintenance. The kitchen area features a break room with a refrigerator, microwave, sink, and plenty of counter
space for snacks. The storage space allows for paper and other supplies for the studio.
The paint color is a soothing, relaxing shade of blue/gray. It matches the furniture well and gives the room a
sleek, contemporary look. We selected light filters to cover the fluorescent lights. After researching brain based
learning, we decided to include the light filters as they create a calm and soothing classroom by decreasing
glare. The glare and flickering lights can cause eyestrain and headaches.
Conclusion
This studio design was created to provide staff and school leaders with an environment that enables intensive
technology work, self-study work, group work, and a forum to practice their teaching craft and increase student
achievement. The design includes easy access for maintenance, as well as room for growth. We believe this
studio will serve the staff and leadership in Cherokee County for years to come.
