I think the same could be said about life in general: the higher the cost to obtain
it, the more valuable we believe it to be. Thats the thematic river thats running
through the Book of Actsthe inestimable treasure of Jesus Christ and the
exorbitant price His ancient followers were willing to pay because of their
relationship with Him.

When tongues are generated by the Holy Spirit, it is a powerfully redemptive gift.
It doesnt hurt; it heals. It doesnt confuse; it clarifies. And it always, always,
leads to Jesus.

the disciples felt full, completely satisfied by the Spirit of the Living God. I
believe this is the best gift in the Holy Spirits prize closeta deep sense of
belonging to the family of God. A spirit of sonship. The security of divine
adoption. The empowering realization that we have the right to call God Dad: The
Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again;
rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him
we cry, Abba, Father. (Romans 8:15 niv)

Church was never intended to be an anemic two-hour, once-a-week assembly of well-

dressed people. It was always supposed to be a powerful force for our good and
Gods glory.

Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and positively broken. If you
want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not
even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid
all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But
in that casketsafe, dark, motionless, airlessit will change. It will not be
broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to
tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. (C. S. Lewis, The Four
Loves)7

The bottom line is the early missionaries didnt try to coerce people from other
cultures to look, think, and act like them; instead, they found creative ways to
connect with them so they could share the message of redemption. Their God-given
compulsion to witness was riddled with love and respect.

something has to be burned for combustion to happen, and I think the same concept
is often true with the gospel. When believers remain radically faithful during
painfully singed seasons, it tends to breed revival. Maybe because just as heat
brings impurities to the surface and reveals the rich luster of precious metal, so
fiery trials can verify the sincerity of an evangelist. God sometimes allows what
is not fair to befall His beloved so the cosmic story of redemption can be
confirmed in us and through us.
