Think and Grow Rich Worksheet

By Tim Bruxvoort and Napoleon Hill

Since Think and Grow Rich is a rather lengthy book, it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed by it. This
worksheet includes highlights from the book and it helps you create an “action plan” you can use to start
developing and moving towards your goals right away.

Step 1 - Write Out Your Definite Purpose

One of the first things you’ll need to do on your journey to riches is to write down what Hill calls the
“Definite Purpose,” “Major Purpose," or "Definite Chief Aim.” This is the major, high-level goal you
want to accomplish. It’s what you feel driven to achieve before you'll feel successful.

An essential part of achieving success is to have a singleness of purpose, or a focus. It’s difficult, if not
impossible, to achieve success if you don’t have a laser-beam-like focus on your major purpose or goal.
This step is critical to developing the burning desire that Hill says is required to achieve your goals.

This is where you'll find out the reason you were put on this Earth. Forget about the external reasons
already given to you by someone else. Look into yourself and discover your real aim in life.

Is it to spread knowledge, to invent something new? Maybe you wish to be a worldwide-recognized

expert in something. Perhaps you want to transmit your knowledge to a future generation, or you want to
help people get what they want.

Whatever it is, define your aim, your ultimate goal: extract it from yourself. Don't expect this to be
somebody else's responsibility. You are responsible for yourself.

Below is part of the six steps Napoleon Hill wrote for establishing desire, but they should be a part of
developing your Definite Purpose:

1. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say "I want
plenty of money." Be definite in the amount.

2. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such
reality as "something for nothing.)

3. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.

4. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or
not, to put this plan into action. (see the Guide for Creating Practical Plans below)

5. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time
limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly
the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.

Here's an example of what your Definite Purpose could look like:

By December 31, 2006, I will have made $xxx, xxx dollars from my various business activities
that include: list your money making opportunities here. My long-term objective is to have assets
worth $2 million dollars by December 31, 2008. In return for this money, I will stop wasting my
time watching TV and will instead work on reaching my goals. I will commit $x dollars a month
for acquiring the specific knowledge I need and for marketing my business. I will help people get

what they want in life by providing a valuable service or product to them. I will start by
purchasing a training course on (your topic here) and will commit two hours a day studying it.
Once I have been through the materials once, I will use the two hours a day to implement what I
have learned.

My Definite Purpose Is:

Once you have defined your Definite Purpose, stick to it; take constant action toward the attainment of
your goal.

Guide for Developing Practical Plans

Here's Napoleon Hills recommendation on how to build practical plans:

a) Ally yourself with a group of as many people as you may need for the creation, and carrying out
of your plan, or plans for the accumulation of money—making use of the "MasterMind"
principle. (Compliance with this instruction is absolutely essential. Do not neglect it.)

b) Before forming your "MasterMind" alliance, decide what advantages, and benefits, you may offer
the individual members of your group, in return for their cooperation. No one will work
indefinitely without some form of compensation. No intelligent person will either request or
expect another to work without adequate compensation, although this may not always be in the
form of money.

c) Arrange to meet with the members of your "MasterMind" group at least twice a week, and more
often if possible, until you have jointly perfected the necessary plan, or plans for the
accumulation of money.

d) Maintain PERFECT HARMONY between yourself and every member of your "Master Mind"
group. If you fail to carry out this instruction to the letter, you may expect to meet with failure.
The "MasterMind" principle cannot obtain where PERFECT HARMONY does not prevail.

When you are just starting out in any endeavor you may have a difficult time following Hill's instructions
above. Since you don't have a lot of experience you may not have a lot to contribute to a MasterMind
group.

There are less traditional ways to MasterMind. Since a MasterMind is “coordination of knowledge and
effort” you can effectively get the knowledge of Master Mind members through books, audiotapes, or
seminars. Whenever someone creates one of these informational products, they are essentially giving you
their knowledge within the material.

If your definite purpose has already been achieved by someone else, which there are people who have
achieved almost anything you want to try, then by studying that person you are essentially
MasterMinding with him or her. In fact, if that person has a training course complete with plans on how
to duplicate his or her success, your plans are essentially approved by this “virtual” MasterMind.

Seminars are another great way to MasterMind since you actually get to network with other like-minded
people. They are also a good way to find people you can form a MasterMind group with. Once you have
more experience, you'll be more able to MasterMind the way Hill describes it. For now, just get started
and do not let these instructions stop you.

When working on your plans, keep in mind these facts:

1. You are engaged in an undertaking of major importance to you. To be sure of success, you must
have faultless plans.

2. You must have the advantage of the experience, education, native ability and imagination of other
minds. This is in harmony with the methods followed by every person who has accumulated a
great fortune.

No individual has sufficient experience, education, native ability, and knowledge to insure the
accumulation of a great fortune, without the cooperation of other people. Every plan you adopt, in your
endeavor to accumulate wealth, should be the joint creation of yourself and every other member of your
"MasterMind" group. You may originate your own plans, either in whole or in part, but SEE THAT
THOSE PLANS ARE CHECKED, AND APPROVED BY THE MEMBERS OF YOUR "MASTER
MIND" ALLIANCE. (if you are following the plans in a training course by an expert on your topic, your
plans have essentially been approved).

If the first plan which you adopt does not work successfully, replace it with a new plan, if this new plan
fails to work, replace it, in turn with still another, and so on, until you find a plan which DOES WORK.
Right here is the point at which the majority of men meet with failure, because of their lack of
PERSISTENCE in creating new plans to take the place of those which fail.

The most intelligent man living cannot succeed in accumulating money, or in any other undertaking
without plans that are practical and workable. Just keep this fact in mind, and remember when your plans
fail, that temporary defeat is not permanent failure. It may only mean that your plans have not been
sound. Build other plans. Start all over again.

Step 2 - Establish Desire

Every human being who reaches the age of understanding of the purpose of money, wishes for it. Wishing
will not bring riches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then

planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence that
does not recognize failure, will bring riches.

The method by which DESIRE for riches can be translated into its financial equivalent, consists of the six
definite, practical steps described in Chapter 2. Since you did the previous five steps when you defined
your Definite Purpose, now you just have to do the following remaining step:

1. Go into some quiet spot where you will not be disturbed or interrupted, and repeat aloud, (so you
may hear your own words) your written statement [of your Definite Purpose] twice daily, once
just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. AS YOU READ--SEE
AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY.

Repeat this program night and morning until you can see, (in your imagination) the money you
intend to accumulate.

It is especially important that you observe, and follow this instruction. You may complain that it is
impossible for you to "see yourself in possession of money" before you actually have it. Here is where a
BURNING DESIRE will come to your aid. If you truly DESIRE money so keenly that your desire is an
obsession, you will have no difficulty in convincing yourself that you will acquire it. The object is to want
money, and to become so determined to have it that you CONVINCE yourself you will have it.

Step 3– Developing Faith

FAITH is a state of mind that may be induced, or created, by affirmation or repeated instructions to the
subconscious mind through the principle of self-suggestion. By following the instructions on establishing
desire, you may CONVINCE the subconscious mind that you believe you will receive that for which you
ask, and it will act upon that belief, which your subconscious mind passes back to you in the form of
"FAITH," followed by definite plans for procuring that which you desire.

The method by which one develops FAITH, where it does not already exist, is extremely difficult to
describe, almost as difficult, in fact, as it would be to describe the color of red to a blind man who has
never seen color, and has nothing with which to compare what you describe to him. Faith is a state of
mind that you may develop at will, after you have mastered the thirteen principles, because it is a state of
mind that develops voluntarily, through application and use of these principles.

Repetition of affirmation of orders to your subconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary
development of the emotion of faith.

Putting Your Subconscious Mind to Work

Remember, as you carry out these instructions, that you are applying the principle of self-suggestion for
the purpose of giving orders to your subconscious mind. Remember, also, that your subconscious mind
will act ONLY upon instructions that are emotionalized, and handed over to it with "feeling." FAITH is
the strongest, and most productive of the emotions.

Hill states that “all thoughts which have been emotionalized, (given feeling) and mixed with faith, begin
immediately to translate themselves into their physical equivalent or counterpart.”

The way I chose to “emotionalize” my repetition is to create a photo album of what’s important to me,
which is primarily my family. I also threw in some pictures of material things I want. Before I speak

www.thinktorich.com

aloud my Definite Purpose I look at the pictures and this helps give feeling to them. Visualizing your
Definite Purpose as already achieved is another way you can give feeling to the repetition of instructions.

These instructions may, at first, seem abstract. Do not let this disturb you. Follow the instructions, no
matter how abstract or impractical they may at first appear to be. The time will soon come, if you do as
you have been instructed, in spirit as well as in act, when a whole new universe of power will unfold to
you.

Skepticism, in connection with ALL new ideas, is characteristic of all human beings. But if you follow
the instructions outlined, your skepticism will soon be replaced by belief and this in turn will soon
become crystallized into ABSOLUTE FAITH. Then you will have arrived at the point where you may
truly say, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul!

To make the best use of your subconscious mind, you can also add the following paragraph to your
Definite Purpose.

"I believe that I will have this money in my possession. My faith is so strong that I can now see
this money before my eyes. I can touch it with my hands. It is now awaiting transfer to me at the
time, and in the proportion that I deliver products or services I intend to sell in return for it. I am
awaiting a plan by which to accumulate this money, and I will follow that plan, when it is
received."

Step 4 – Establish Self-Confidence

Any idea, plan, or purpose may be placed in the mind through repetition of thought. This is why you are
asked to write out a statement of your major purpose, or Definite Purpose, commit it to memory, and
repeat it, in audible words, day after day, until these vibrations of sound have reached your subconscious
mind.

We are what we are, because of the vibrations of thought that we pick up and register, through the stimuli
of our daily environment.

Resolve to throw off the influences of any unfortunate environment, and to build your own life the way
you want it. Taking inventory of mental assets and liabilities, you will discover that your greatest
weakness is lack of self-confidence.

This handicap can be surmounted, and timidity translated into courage, through the aid of the principle of
self-suggestion. The application of this principle may be made through a simple arrangement of positive
thought impulses stated in writing, memorized, and repeated, until they become a part of the working
equipment of the subconscious faculty of your mind.

Therefore, while you are repeating aloud your Definite Purpose, also read the following self-confidence
formula:

SELF-CONFIDENCE FORMULA

1. I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my Definite Purpose in life, therefore, I
DEMAND of myself persistent, continuous action toward its attainment, and I here and now
promise to render such action.

2. I realize the dominating thoughts of my mind will eventually reproduce themselves in outward,
physical action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality, therefore, I will
concentrate my thoughts for thirty minutes daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intend
to become, thereby creating in my mind a clear mental picture of that person.

3. I know through the principle of self-suggestion, any desire that I persistently hold in my mind
will eventually seek expression through some practical means of attaining the object behind it;
therefore, I will devote ten minutes daily to demanding of myself the development of SELF-
CONFIDENCE.

4. I have clearly written down a description of my Definite Purpose in life, and I will never stop
trying, until I shall have developed sufficient self-confidence for its attainment.

5. I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure, unless built upon truth and justice,
therefore, I will engage in no transaction that does not benefit all whom it affects. I will succeed
by attracting to myself the forces I wish to use, and the cooperation of other people. I will induce
others to serve me, because of my willingness to serve others. I will eliminate hatred, envy,
jealousy, selfishness, and cynicism, by developing love for all humanity, because I know that a
negative attitude toward others can never bring me success. I will cause others to believe in me,
because I will believe in them, and in myself. I will sign my name to this formula, commit it to
memory, and repeat it aloud once a day, with full FAITH that it will gradually influence my
THOUGHTS and ACTIONS so that I will become a self-reliant and successful person.

How and why this formula works may be a mystery, but it does work IF it is used constructively.
However, if you focus your thoughts on negative things, then this power of self-suggestion will work
against you. This is what happens to those who go down in defeat, and end their lives in poverty, misery,
and distress. The cause may be found in the fact that all impulses of thought have a tendency to clothe
themselves in their physical equivalent.

If you follow the instructions in this worksheet, you'll be well on your way to financial success.
