3 Inverter general introductions

3.1 PV grid-connected power generation system

The PV grid-connected power generation system is shown in Figure 3-1.

It is composed of the PV array, combiner box, DC power distribution,

grid-connected inverter, step-up transformer, data acquisition system and other

components. The solar energy is converted into the DC electric energy via the

PV module, and the electric energy transmitted by the PV array is distributed

through the combiner box and DC power distribution cabinet, and next, the DC

current is converted into the sine-wave current with the same frequency of the

grid and the controllable amplitude of the phases through the grid-connected

inverter, at last, the current is fed into the grid via the transformer which

matches the current to the voltage of the grid.

3.2 Circuit structure

Figure 3-2 is the main circuit structure for the 1MW/1.25MW

grid-connected inverter. The DC current input into the inverter by the PV array

is converted into AC current through the three-phase full-bridge converter, and

next, the AC current is converted into the sine-wave current by being filtered

via the filter. At last, the current enters into the gird for power generation

through the transformer for matching.

6 Running state and operation procedures

6.1 Running state

Warning!

When there are lights on the PV array, the DC voltage should

be provided to the equipment!

Stop state

Stop state refers to the state under which the grid-connected operation is

stopped when receiving the stop command, or pressing down the emergency

stop button, or in case of unrecoverable fault. If the above conditions are not

met, it will enter the standby state.

Standby state

Standby state refers to the state under which the system stops running and

waits for meeting the startup conditions. It will enter the wait state after the

grid, PV, environment temperature, and inverter conditions meet the

grid-connected running conditions.

Wait state

Wait state refers to the state under which the timing confirmation is

delayed before the grid-connected running according to different shutdown

causes and grid-connected regulations. It will enter the self-test state after the

time of waiting for confirmation is up.

Self-test state

Self-test state refers to the state under which the inverter will test its own
25
1MW/1.25MW PV Grid-Connected Inverter Operation Manual

hardware before starting the grid-connected running. The items need to be

tested include: phase sequence of the power grid, PV insulation impedance, DC

voltage sampling, AC voltage sampling, contactor state, Hall current sensor

signal and other key quantities.

Running state

In this state, the inverter is at the grid-connected running state, and

converts the DC electric energy of the PV array into the AC current to enter

into the grid, and the inverter always deliveries the maximum electric energy to

the grid in a maximum power tracing mode.

6.3 Grid connection conditions

The whole process of the inverter entering the mode of grid connection

and power generation is automatic. The system constantly monitors the PV

input voltage, grid voltage, grid frequency, grid phase sequence, AC/DC

lighting protection state and IGBT module state, to determine whether the

conditions of grid connection and power generation are met. When all the

conditions are met, the inverter will enter the mode of grid connection and

power generation. And when the following faults occur in the grid, the inverter

is immediately disconnected with the grid, to enter the protection mode:

(1) After the system selects the low voltage ride-through mode and when the

grid voltage drops, the inverter enters the low voltage ride-through

protection mode. In the relevant standard, it requires the time for the

inverter to withstand the low voltage to be 1 to 3 seconds according to

different degree of the drop voltage. If the grid voltage does not return to

the allowed grid voltage range in the specified time, the inverter will

immediately disconnect with the grid;

(2) After the system selects the islanding protection mode and when the

inverter detects the occurrence of islanding effect, the inverter will

disconnect with the grid in 2 seconds;

(3) The running conditions of the inverter vary with different grid

frequency:

7 System fault

7.1 Fault causes

The system fault is generally because of the following causes:

External grid connection fault (e.g.: improper A, B, C wire connection, or

phase sequence connection error);

The PV voltage exceeds the allowed range:

Grid undervoltage (Uac < "Uac, min")

Grid overvoltage (Uac > "Uac, max")

Grid frequency is too low (fac < "fac, min");

Grid frequency is too high (fac > "fac, max");

Output short circuit;

IGBT module fault.

Note!

First, check whether the ordinary power outage occurs or

not, and whether the inverter output cables are

disconnected or not.

Warning!

If no any other faults are found, the professional

technicians are required to check the connections between

the inverter and power transmission grid.
