KC ends Clevelands run at 22
CLEVELAND The Cleveland Indians can return to clinching
their division and playoff preparations.
Their historic winning streak is, well, history.
Cleveland had its AL record run stopped at 22 straight games on
Friday night as the Indians were beaten 4-3 by the Kansas City
Royals, who became the first team to conquer the defending
league champions since Aug. 23.
Jason Vargas (16-10) pitched into the sixth and Brandon Moss
homered off Trevor Bauer (16-9) as the Royals ended baseballs
longest win streak in 101 years. The Indians set a new league
mark and came within four of matching the overall record held by
the 1916 New York Giants.

SCOTS

A lot of that was mixing and matching parts, Messina

said. You dont want guys taking more punishment than they
need to. Were already banged up.
While it took a while for the Carlmont offense to get in gear,
the defense was ring on all cylinders from the start. The Scots
held Lincoln (2-1 overall) to just three rst downs in the rst
two quarters and two of those didnt come until the nal
minutes of the opening half. In the second, the Scots only
allowed two rst downs as they held the Mustangs to a paltry
73 yards of offense for the game.
The defense kind of kept us in the game last week before we
got going, Messina said. They did the same tonight.
Lloyd, who in addition to playing tight end is also a line-
backer on defense, was a major factor in the Scots dominance.
He was in the Mustangs backeld all night long as he nished
with three of Carlmonts four sacks, his nal sack also result-
ing in a safety to make the score 36-0 late in the third quarter.
I dont think (our defense) is a secret any more, Messina
said, as the Scots posted their rst shutout of the season.
Through four games, the Scots have allowed a total of 45
points.
Carlmont didnt get on the scoreboard until late in the rst
quarter when Palthe faked a handoff left and then rolled right
before tucking the ball and going into the end zone from 8
yards out to give the Scots a lead they would not relinquish.
Carlmont made it 14-0 early in the second quarter when Kuhn
took a handoff on a y sweep over the left side and into the end
zone for an 11-yard scoring run.
It was 21-0 by halftime as Julian Morin broke off a 41-yard
scoring run with under two minutes left in the rst half.
Morin continued his strong play as the rst-year varsity
starter nished with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 13 car-
ries. He added a 39-yard score on the Scots rst drive of the
third quarter that gave them a 27-0 lead.
Morin was hardly alone in gouging the Mustangs. Demarii
Blanks had a sub-par performance by his standards, nishing
with 98 yards on 13 carries, but he was battling leg cramps for
most of the game before sitting out the nal quarter.
Miles Taye, who lled in when Blanks was out, showed he
could be a future feature back as he nished with 35 yards on
seven carries. Overall, Carlmont rushed for 318 yards on 41
carries.
Thats why we run the offense we do, Messina said. We
run kind of what our school provides. We know well have run-
ning backs.
After Morins second touchdown, the Scots iced the game
with their 16-point explosion on three plays and it was a run-
ning clock in the fourth quarter.
Weve been so bad for so long this is a good thing
(being 4-0) and we want to appreciate it, Messina said.
