[MUSIC] We're going to talk about the basics here,

string names and string numbers. So first of all, strings on the guitar
are numbered from high to low. So, the first string,
of course, we call number one. This is an E string and
it sounds like this. [SOUND] Next string down is number two and this is a B string.
[SOUND] And it sounds like that. The third string down is a G string. [SOUND]
Number three. The fourth string and this string has a
different consistency and most of the time this is the case whether you're playing
steel strings or nylon strings. [SOUND] That's a D-string,
number four is a D-string. Moving along, the fifth string [SOUND] is an A-string,
and the sixth string is also
[SOUND] an E-string. Now this E [SOUND] is
actually the same as that E. [SOUND] But it's two octaves lower. So in review,
strings are numbered from top to bottom, one, two, three, four, two, three, four,
five, six. [SOUND] One is E. [SOUND] Two is B. [SOUND] Three is G. [SOUND] Four is
D. [SOUND] Five is A. [SOUND] Six is E, and this E [SOUND] is two octaves lower
[SOUND] than that E. And we'll talk about octaves
in an upcoming lesson.
