Liyana (Leader) : Hi everyone! How are you guys doing?

Danial (Connector) : hey, doin good I guess. Havent get my beauty sleep lately tho due to
the fact that my insomnia is getting really serious lately. I dont know
but I think Ive been contemplating on this assignment every night.

Liyana (Leader) : You should have at least 8 hours sleep a day. If not it will affect your
health. Do you know that health is important to us? Health is the level
of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living organism. If we do not
take care of our own health, we will be easily get sick and this will
indirectly affect our daily routine. If we cant do our daily routine as
what we usually do, it may lead to stress and it will may cause to
another disease. So, Danial, you should take care of your own health.
You are still young and you still have a long journey to go.

Danial (connector) : Yes, I know Im trying my best to improve so that I can be all bushy
tailed in the morning, thanks for looking up for me though. So lets get
right back in topic.

Chai (Q) : Shaz could you tell me what is health in general?

Shaz (Word Master) : Well of course I can Chloe. For your information, the English word health
comes from the old English word Hale which means Wholeness, being
whole, sound or well and the word health itself can also be used in non-
medical context. For example A healthy economy. But because we are
discussing about our health, let me tell me you the definition of health as
defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO). WHO stated that that
health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This means that health is actually
a complicated topic. It is not only includes all the organs of your body, but
your emotions, relationship with others, and your lifestyle.

Liyana : As what I know, health can be categorised as physical and mental

health. Physical health can be defined as the condition of your body
whereas mental health relates to the condition of your emotion.
Chloe :Mental health? I seldom come across this word. Isnt they almost the
same since they are
both under the same topic which is health. What is their differences?
Is mental health important? I was wondering if you could tell me these
information.

Liyana :Good physical health is when your body is functioning as it was

designed to function. Poor physical health may cause your body to
dysfunction as what it should be. Examples of physical health problem
are cancer, diabetes, asthma and many more. Living with these
problems can result in many adjustments and changes, such as loss of
independence and not being able to do all the active things you used
to do or usually enjoy. If we have a poor physical health, it can lead to
an increased risk of developing mental health problem. That is what I
can conclude about physical health.

Mental health is as important as physical health. A mental illness is a

disease that causes mild to severe disturbance in thought or behaviour,
resulting in an ability to cope with lifes ordinary demand and routines.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social
wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel and act. If we experience mental
health problems, our thinking, mood and behaviour could be affected.
Examples of mental health are, schizophrenia, depression, stress and
lots more. So, this is what physical and mental health means.

Danial : sorry may I? well according to Jeste et al people who suffers from
schizophrenia are most likely to spontaneously report physical
symptoms. This is because people who is sufferinhg from serious
mental illness are more likely do horrid behaviours which is referred to
as life choices they will start smoking, drinking, start to practice bad
diets and will rarely exercise.

Chloe :But why we seldom come across this term which is mental health
whereas almost every time we can see physical health everywhere?
Does it means that people feels that an illness with physical component
is more acceptable than a mental illness which people normally
described as its all in ones head? Why will they think so?

Hani : First of all, in my perspective, we heard everyday on television,

newspapers headlines are more focused on both mental and physical
issues actually. For example the most common diseases relates with
physical health are diabetes and obesity but, all eyes are also on the
mental illness as well that is always arises such as depression and
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and numerous of them. Generally,
physical and mental health are both relates with each other because
healthy body comes from healthy mind. Even though he or she may
look normal from the outside but the reality is that person is not
healthy inside which relates with mental illness. So people should open
their minds how both physical and mental illness really relates each and
both are really important.

Danial : Apologies for the interruption, as we were talking about unhealthy

lifestyle. I would like to inform you that the Malaysia Minister of Health
has given warning that the country is in the midst of an mental illness
epidemic. Mental illness is a serious issue that is happening in
Malaysia at the moment. That will slowly rises until this sort of issue is
hard to contain

People who is suffering from serious mental illness have higher

morbidity and mortality rates of cardiovascular disease than the general
population.

The reason why is because well in my opinion. Malaysia is not living a

healthy lifestyle. When I was having my tournaments overseas I studied
and notice how different their lifestyle was. Compare to Malaysia their
lifestyle are much more better and healthier. There is a saying about
health which is prevent before it happen. When I was in the Australia
they serve eggs and sausages for breakfast. But when Im in Malaysia
I took my Nasi Lemak. The Aussie exercise often, you can see loads of
people go out for a jog and living a healthy lifestyle while Malaysia
usually stick into their homes.

Speaking of unhealthy lifestyle that may impact mental health,

according to the WHO (World Health Organisation), mental health
disorders are estimated to contribute to 16.8% of the global burden of
disease (WHO, 2008) but in my opinion. I think Malaysia should balance
both on mental and health illness because the people in Malaysia is
also suffering from lack of physical healthi

Chloe :So, the problem now is how can we take care of our physical and
mental health? How to make sure we can achieve equilibrium in
between physical and mental health since they are both so important?

Shaz :Well, I will choose to live with a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle
actually leaves you fit, energetic and at reduce risk for disease, based
on the choices you make about your daily habits. Good nutrition, daily
exercise and adequate sleep are the foundations for continuing good
health. People should also manage their stress well in a positive ways,
instead of through smoking or drinking alcohol, reduces wear and tear
on your body at the hormonal level. All that is for the sake of a longer
and more comfortable life, put together.

The link between physical and mental health is incontrovertible. Either

one will have effects one other. Poor physical health can lead to poor
mental health and the other way around, just as good physical health
can improve our state of mind, a strong and healthy mind can greatly
improve our ability to cope with physical ailments.

The mind and body are all part of what makes us who and what we are
and cannot be separated in terms of health.

Chloe :Yea, you are right, healthy lifestyle is a must for us to practice in order
to have a better health , not only physically but also mentally. Talking
of healthy lifestyle, I would like share to all of you about a brand new
concept which is TLC.

Hani :What is TLC , is it Travel Living Channel?

Chloe :No, its actually Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes. TLC is an effective

lifestyle therapy and be as effective as psychotherapy or medication for
treating some physical or mental illness such as depressive. In fact,
TLCS is beneficial to us in the way it is effective and cost effective. It has
lesser side effects than traditional method which is mainly depends on
medicine. By practising TLCS, our mental health and also our body
health can have a positive improvement. Besides, it helps us to save
cost because it reduces the cost of lifestyle related disorders such as
heart-related diseases which mainly depends on expensive medical
treatment and medicine where most of the people couldnt afford. We
cannot depend too much on medicine. Misuse of medicine will lead to
drug abuse and even worse, it may cause our kidney to over-worked.
As an example, pain killers remain a front line defense against pain, and
this means they are routinely prescribed after major surgeries.
Additionally, many believe that the drugs which are prescribed by a
doctor mean that its safe and non-addictive. Therefore, the risk of
addiction to these drugs increases and this shows that concept of TLCS
is way more better than traditional method. Whats more perhaps I
should mention about the examples of TLCS to get you guys a clearer
image. There is so many examples, let me just introduce a few which is
exercise, nutrition and diet, relationships and others.

Hani :Wait, is it including recreation & enjoyable activities, relaxation and

stress management, religious, contribution and services? I think I had
read an article of TLCS in the net before.

Liyana : Talking about (ur point), I have a few ideas to share

Shaz :
Danial :

Chloe :And besides this, relaxation and stress management are also playing
important roles in improving health problems, physically and mentally.
Believe it or not, the benefits of using a good relaxation and stress
management are overwhelming. Other physiological benefits include:

Decrease in heart rate

Decrease in respiration rate

Decrease in blood pressure

Decrease in muscle tension

Decrease in metabolic rate and oxygen consumption

Improved immuned system

Overall better health

And clearer mind with better memory

Hani : In addition, there is also part of TLCS which is also very important to
improve physical and mental health and that would be recreation and
enjoyable activities. Actually nowadays people are too depending on
medication, and medical treatment because they only think that taking
pills or doctors prescription is the only thing that can cure. The
recreational and enjoyable activities is the heart of the healthy lifestyle
that helps to increased social interactions, and exerts excitements,
humor to reduce stress and depression. Plus, by carry out the enjoyable
activities such as be active in arts, music paintings can actually enhance
skills, maturation and gives relaxation.
