CHOICE # 1
TOPIC: Poverty

A. BACKGROUND
This qualitative study investigated the psychological experience of poverty among 2 groups of
Filipinos who were interviewed about the effects of being raised poor, 12 who became rich, and 13
who remained poor. Using constructivist and critical theories as research paradigms and grounded
theory as methodology, the results of the study illustrated perceived causes, coping mechanisms,
and cultural factors. Surprisingly, both groups were very similar in their experiences of not having
basic needs met, of negative emotions, and of generally attributing their poverty to familial
circumstances. The ways of coping with poverty, such as receiving and giving assistance and
imploring God for help, and the cultural features of perseverance ( pagpupunyagi) and reliance on
others ( pakikipagkapwa) were similarly influential in both groups. Because the main difference
between both groups is the occurrence of chance events that provided access to education and
opportunities to emigrate for those who have become rich, the oppressive structures of a society
that perpetuate poverty are discussed. In developing countries such as the Philippines, the
psychological experience of poverty is characterized by the impossibility of upward mobility.

Topic: Global Warming

A. BACKGROUND
A new paradigm for planning under conditions of deep uncertainty has emerged in the
literature. According to this paradigm, a planner should create a strategic vision of the future,
commit to short-term actions, and establish a framework to guide future actions. A plan that
embodies these ideas allows for its dynamic adaptation over time to meet changing
circumstances. We propose a method for decisionmaking under uncertain global and regional
changes called 'Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways'. We base our approach on two
complementary approaches for designing adaptive plans: 'Adaptive Policymaking' and
'Adaptation Pathways'. Adaptive Policymaking is a theoretical approach describing a planning
process with different types of actions (e.g. 'mitigating actions' and 'hedging actions') and
signposts to monitor to see if adaptation is needed. In contrast, Adaptation Pathways provides
an analytical approach for exploring and sequencing a set of possible actions based on
alternative external developments over time. We illustrate the Dynamic Adaptive Policy
Pathways approach by producing an adaptive plan for long-term water management of the
Rhine Delta in the Netherlands that takes into account the deep uncertainties about the future
arising from social, political, technological, economic, and climate changes. The results suggest
that it is worthwhile to further test and use the approach.

Topic: Depression

A. BACKGROUND
Depression is a mental disorder, with different classifications which have as main symptoms,
persistent sadness, lack of interest, lack of pleasure, swings between feelings of guilt and low self-
esteem, sleep disorders and appetite. It is known that hormonal changes can lead to significant
emotional changes and vice versa, due to changes in the central nervous system, action of hormones
on specific receptors or by metabolic changes, therefore, the endocrine disorders become one of the
possible causes of depression. This work is a study of the major hormones associated with
depression. It was drawn from a literature review, in which corticotrophin hormone, cortisol,
estrogen, progesterone and thyroid hormones were identified as the main hormones related to
depression. These hormones are essential for the correct functioning of the metabolism, therefore,
it is observed that hormonal changes may contribute to the development of depression as well as
aggravate it or even hamper the treatment of patients who already have the disorder.
