Hidesato and his host both rose to their feet and
rushed to the balcony, and the warrior saw on the
opposite mountain two great balls of glowing fire
coming nearer and nearer. The Dragon King stood
by the warriors side trembling with fear. The
centipede! The centipede! Those two balls of fire
are its eyes. It is coming for its prey! Now is the
time to kill it. Hidesato looked where his host
pointed, and, in the dim light of the starlit
evening, behind the two balls of fire he saw the
long body of an enormous centipede winding
round the mountains, and the light in its hundred
feet glowed like so many distant lanterns moving
slowly towards the shore. Hidesato showed not
the least sign of fear. He tried to calm the Dragon
King. Dont be afraid. I shall surely kill the
centipede. Just bring me my bow and arrows. The
Dragon King did as he was bid, and the warrior
noticed that he had only three arrows left in his
quiver. He took the bow, and fitting an arrow to
the notch, took careful aim and let fly.
Hidesato e seu anfitrio ambos levantaram-se e
correram para a sacada, e o guerreiro viu na
montanha oposta duas grandes bolas de fogo
brilhante chegando cada vez mais perto. O Rei
Drago ficou do lado do guerreiro tremendo de
medo. A centopeia! A centopeia! Aquelas duas
bolas de fogo so seus olhos. Ela est vindo atrs
de sua presa! Agora hora de mat-la. Hidesato
olhou onde seu anfitrio apontou, e, na turva luz
da noite estrelada, atrs das duas bolas de fogo ele
viu o longo corpo de uma enorme centopeia
enrolando-se ao redor das montanhas, e a luz em
suas centenas de ps brilhou como muitas
lanternas distantes movendo-se lentamente em
direo costa. Hidesato no demonstrou o menor
sinal de medo. Ele tentou acalmar o Rei Drago.
No fique com medo. Eu deverei com certeza
matar a centopeia. Apenas traga-me meu arco e
flechas. O Rei Drago fez como foi ordenado, e o
guerreiro notou que ele tinha somente trs flechas
restantes em sua aljava. Ele pegou o arco, e
encaixando uma flecha no entalhe, mirou
cuidadosamente e atirou.

Anlise do texto:

Hidesato e seu anfitrio ambos levantaram-se e correram para a sacada,

rose to their feet: passado da expresso rise to their feet, que significa fica de p, levantar-se.
Nesse caso foi usado their (eles), pois o texto fala de Hidesato e seu anfitrio, porm a expresso pode
usar outros pronomes (my, his, her, our etc.).

We rose to our feet when the bride came down the aisle.
Ns ficamos de p quando a noiva atravessou o corredor.
And even when I was close to defeat, I rose to my feet.
E mesmo quando eu estava perto da derrota, eu fiquei de p.
He rose to his feet to greet me.
Ele levantou-se/ficou de p para saudar-me.

e o guerreiro viu na montanha oposta duas grandes bolas de fogo brilhante chegando cada vez
mais perto.

nearer and nearer: nearer significa mais perto, nearer and nearer (literalmente mais perto e
mais perto) significa cada vez mais perto. Esse padro ocorre tambm com outras palavras, como nos
exemplos abaixo.

He is growing bigger and bigger everytime I see him.

Ele est crescendo cada vez mais toda vez que eu vejo ele. (traduo literal de bigger and bigger =
maior e maior )
The car went faster and faster and I was afraid we would crash.
O carro foi cada vez mais rpido e eu estava com medo que fossemos bater. (traduo literal de faster
and faster = mais rpido e mais rpido)
I am getting better and better.
Eu estou ficando cada vez melhor. (traduo literal de better and better = melhor e melhor).

The Dragon King stood by the warriors side trembling with fear.
O Rei Drago ficou do lado do guerreiro tremendo de medo.

stood by: passado da expresso stand by que pode ter sentidos variados como estar
pronto/esperando para fazer algo, no fazer nada perante uma situao ou ficar do lado/apoiar
algum. Observe os exemplos abaixo:

A boat will be standing by in case of an emergency.

Um barco estar esperando/pronto em caso de uma emergncia.
We can't just stand by and watch her die.
Ns no podemos simplesmente no fazer nada e assistir ela morrer.
We knew they would stand by us no matter what we'd done.
Ns sabamos que eles iriam ficar do nosso lado no importa o que tnhamos feito.

The centipede! The centipede! Those two balls of fire are its eyes.
A centopeia! A centopeia! Aquelas duas bolas de fogo so seus olhos.

It is coming for its prey! Now is the time to kill it.

Ela est vindo atrs de sua presa! Agora a hora de mat-la.

coming for: da expresso come for que significa ir de encontro ou atrs de algum.

The taxi will come for us at around 8 o'clock.

O taxi vir at ns por volta das 8 horas.
The police came for him in the middle of the night.
A polcia veio atrs dele no meio da noite.

Eles esto vindo atrs de mim.

Hidesato olhou onde seu anfitrio apontou, e, na turva luz da noite estrelada (iluminada
pelas estrelas),

towards: na direo de algo ou algum ou em relao a algo ou algum.

the least sign [o menor sinal]: a expresso the least significa o menor/mnimo/nenhum e usada
para diminuir algo. Observe os exemplos:

The dinner menu is the least of my worries tonight.

O cardpio do jantar a menor de minhas preocupaes hoje noite.
The least you can do is to be polite.
O mnimo que voc pode fazer ser educado.
He's not in the least interested in what is happening in the world.
Ele no est nem um pouco interessado no que est acontecendo no mundo.

He tried to calm the Dragon King.

Ele tentou acalmar o Rei Drago.

Dont be afraid. I shall surely kill the centipede. Just bring me my bow and arrows.
No fique com medo. Eu deverei com certeza matar a centopeia. Apenas traga-me meu arco e
flechas.

The Dragon King did as he was bid, and the warrior noticed that he had only three arrows left
in his quiver.
O Rei Drago fez como foi ordenado, e o guerreiro notou que ele tinha somente trs flechas
restantes em sua aljava.

bid: a palavra bid mais comumente usada com o sentido de fazer uma oferta, dar um lance, porm
no texto ela tem o sentido mais raro e no to comumente usado de ordenar algum a fazer algo.
Observe os exemplos com ambos os sentidos:

I bid $2000 for the painting.

Eu ofereo $2000 pela pintura.
He plans to stop bidding if the bids go over $500.
Ele planeja parar de dar lances se as ofertas passarem de $500.
We did as we were bid.
Ns fizemos como fomos ordenados.

He took the bow, and fitting an arrow to the notch, took careful aim and let fly.
Ele pegou o arco, e encaixando uma flecha no entalhe, mirou cuidadosamente e atirou.

took careful aim [mirou cuidadosamente]: passado da expresso take aim, que significa mirar.

Take aim at the police van.

Mirar no furgo da polcia.
He took aim at the squirrel.
Ele mirou no esquilo.
The sniper took aim.
O atirador mirou.

let fly: expresso que significa atirar algo de uma arma.

Police officers let fly canisters of tear gas.

Oficiais de polcia atiraram bombas de gs lacrimogneo.
Stones were loaded into our weapons, and as the first bird flew over, we let fly.
Pedras foram carregadas em nossas armas, e conforme o primeiro pssaro voou, ns atiramos.
