Structural Design Criteria

1.1. Design Loads

All components of the structural system were designed based on the design loads
presented below. Ultimate Strength Design (USD) method was used in the design of
all reinforced concrete members including foundations.

1.1.1. Dead Loads

Dead load includes all the weight of permanent construction materials and
equipment that are permanently fastened thereto and or supported thereby:

a. Unit Weight of Structural Steel 77.00 kN/m3

b. Dry Unit Weight of Concrete 23.54 kN/m3
c. Unit Weight of Soil 16.00 kN/m3
d. Floor Topping, 25 mm thk. 0.60 kPa
e. Floor Finish (Solid Flat Tile) 0.50 kPa
f. Ceiling (Suspended channel w/ Acoustic Board) 0.15 kPa
g. Utilities 0.24 kPa
h. 6 CHB Exterior wall, both face plastered 2.73 kPa
i. 4 thk CHB Interior wall, both face plastered 2.11 kPa
j. Partition 1.00 kPa
k. Bituminous Smooth Surface Water Proofing 0.07 kPa

1.1.2. Live Loads and Live Loads Reduction

Live loads includes all the gravity loads except those mentioned above.
These loads may vary in magnitude and its distribution during the life span of
the structure. The minimum values are as follows:

a. Lobbies and Ground Floor Corridors 4.80 kPa

b. Office Area 2.40 kPa
c. Corridors Above Ground Floor 3.80 kPa
d. Roof Live 1.00 kPa

The design live load was reduced in members supporting an area more
than 15 m2, except for the floors used as public assembly and floors designed
for live load greater than 4.80 kPa, in accordance with the following
equation:
15

Maximum reduction factor is 40 percent for members receiving from one

level only, 60 percent for other members or R, as determined by the
following equation:
23.1 1
