Park Sham Device Research Tools
The Park Sham Device is an apparatus used to administer the sham needle and real needles. The Park
Sham Needle appears similar to the real needle, but is blunt and free to slide within the handle so that
when pressed, it telescopes into the handle instead of penetrating the skin. The device holds the un-
inserted sham needle in place, and maintains the sterility of a genuine acupuncture needle. This device
consists of a guide tube: a special oversized tube with base flange which is equipped with double-sided
tape, and can therefore stick on target skin. (Fig 1) Since the Park Sham Device was first developed
in 19991, several teams of researchers in UK2, 3, Japan4, Korea5 and USA6 have tested its credibility and
validity in various settings. Based on these findings, over the past 10 years, it has been frequently used in
research projects, often funded by government agencies including the US National Institute of Health.7-10
Park and his fellow colleagues, who developed this device, state that this device is indistinguishable
from the same procedure using real needles in acupuncture nave subjects, and inactive, where the
specific needle sensation is taken as a surrogate measure of activity.2 However, due to the nature of
minimal physiological activity required to achieve successful subject blinding in acupuncture trial, they

emphatically call for caution in application of sham acupuncture control11 and in interpretation of the
findings.12 For this reason, Park is keen to call this a bona fide version of sham control rather than final version.

Extending the spirit of developing the Park Sham Device for body acupuncture, Park and his
colleagues initially suggested a sham method for auricular acupuncture. In the further stage of
implication, the design was modified. After initial tests by an Italian research team led by Dr.
Marco Romoli, a leader of Italian Federation of Acupuncture Societies, this version of sham
auricular acupuncture is now being accepted for use in clinical trials.

How to use:
1. Remove individual moxa pieces by pushing on reverse side with your finger.
2. Light moxa
3. Apply to acupoint or painful areas. To regulate the heat, apply regulating paper on to the skin first and then apply
the moxa over the paper.
Precautions:
The intensity of heat will vary depending on each persons physical condition and location of application. Please find
your own most suitable level of warmth. If heat is too intense blisters may form, so remove from skin if too hot.
Do not use moxa on the face.
Do not use on wet skin as blisters may form. Dry skin thoroughly before application.
The dried herbal compound will soften and its active ingredients melt at 40 degrees so please keep out of sunlight and store in a
cool location. Keep out of reach of children.

Meridius Cupping Sets
The newly introduced MERIDIUS cupping sets include: 17 cups
in total, 1 hand pistol pump and 1 connecting tube, conveniently
stored in a navy blue case, ideal for travelling. The blue silicon
valve can be detached from the cup when sterilising.
They are the most convenient cupping sets to use and to
sterilize. Individual cups are available to purchase according
to your own unique requirements. If you find that the cup
pumping is tedious, we have the Acu-pump machine available
to apply the pressure in a simpler manner.
Easy disinfection/cleaning/sterilization, silicone top can be separated.
The cups and silicone tops can be autoclavable.
Versatile applicability owing to multiple shapes: oval for the
peri-spinal region, curved bottom for the side of the body,
triangle for edged body surface.
High durability of the cups and silicone tops: silicone top
does not crack from falling, and the thicker and solid
material cups are much more sturdy. Silicone tops are easily
replaceable if necessary.

How to use press pellets:

Magrain and accu-patch are commonly used for both ear and body points.
The small 1.2mm diameter stainless steel, silver or gold pellets produce a long
lasting, continuous compression effect on the point. Gold is said to tone or
energize; silver sedates or calms; and stainless steel balance or harmonizes.
Generally, pellets should be changed every 2 to 3 days to achieve the

maximum effect (usually the body will adapt to the pressure after 2 or 3
days). Before applying, the skin should be thoroughly cleaned with alcohol
and the tape applied with a good seal. The patient may be reminded to
gently press or stimulate these pellets occasionally during the day or as
otherwise directed.

Kinesiology Tape Introduction
Kinesiology taping, developed in the 1970s by Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase,
came to the U.S. in the mid-1990s. Unlike standard athletic taping, which often involves
wrapping a joint for support and compression, kinesiology tape is placed in a variety of
patterns depending on the injury, It is pulled to differing degrees of tension to create
the desired effect and is typically worn for two to five days, unlike standard tape, which
is used mainly during an activity. Kinesiology tape can be used to pull back a shoulder
that is hunching forward, or to reduce swelling in a joint, tape can be used to pull up the
skin and create an area of low pressure where fluid can move and drain. Some clinicians
believe the tape provides stimulation to skin cells that affects pain pathwayssimilar
to rubbing a spot that hurts. (Summarized from the Wall Street Journal Apr 27, 2010)
What is Acu-taping?
This is a relatively new treatment method, but not exclusively for the treatment of
pain. It is a development of Kinesio-taping and was developed by two German doctors,
Hans-Ulrich Hecker and Kay Lieb-Chen. The method has its roots in traditional
Chinese medicine and acupuncture, but also in osteopathy. Acu-taping differs from
Kinesio-taping in that any western symptom can be translated into a Chinese clinical
picture, and then managed with this therapy. Thus more complaints can be treated

using Acu-taping, including internal problems such as bowel disorders, menstrual
problems, and many others. The expected effects of Acu-taping can be summarized as
follows: pain reduction, reduction in muscle spasm, improved tone of weak muscles,
anti-inflammatory actions, improved immune state, decongestion and improved blood
circulation.
Acu-taping is especially useful in the realm of sports medicine.
The tapes are either 5 cm or 2.5 cm wide and 5 metres long.They are made of specially
designed stretchable fabric with an acrylic adhesive.The tapes do not contain any other
chemicals or medications. They are presented in 4 colours: beige, black, pink, and blue.
The different colours are purely for personal preference, and are not intended to have
different functions.
Suggested Instructions for Use

Always shape the cut ends of the tape in such a way that they are curved with no sharp
corners. This helps to reduce the problem of the corners catching in clothing, causing
the tape to become dislodged. To correctly apply the tape, first measure the required
length while the backing tape is still in place, then shape the corners as outlined above.
Position the area to be taped so that the underlying muscles are fully stretched. Remove
the backing and lay the tape on the skin sticking it in place. Do not stretch the tape,
simply lay it on the skin. As the affected muscles relax the tape will take on a slightly
corrugated form. Acu-Tape should stay in place for 3 to 7 days. The exact length of
time will depend on how greasy the skin is and how much the subject perspires. It is
possible to shower carefully, keeping the tape in place.
The area should be patted dry and not rubbed. If the tape then feels unpleasantly damp,
the area may be dried using a hairdryer on the lowest heat setting, held some distance
from the body.
