VERVIEW

The Deans Award for Community Service was initiated in 2008 by students to recognize and promote
dedication to community service amongstudentsandfacultyattheUniversityofMarylandDentalSchool. The
program acknowledgestheimportanceofcommunityserviceactivityamonghealthprofessionalsforthebenefit
of the community and the professional and personal enrichment of the participants.

Students enrolled in the D.D.S. program that average 16 hours of community service per semester will be
awarded the Dean's Award for Community Service at the end of their Junior year. Students who average 20
hours of community service per semester will be awarded the Dean's Award for Outstanding Community
Service at the endofJunioryear.Studentswillbeencouragedtoentertheawardontheircurriculumvitaewhen
applying to postgraduate programs. At the time of graduation, students who have averaged sufficient
community service hours to receive the Deans Award will be recognized at graduation.

Students in the dental hygiene program will receive the DeansAwardforCommunityServiceforaveraging16


hours of community service per semester and the Deans Award for Outstanding Community Service for
averaging 20 hours of community service per semester. The students receiving the awards will be
acknowledged at graduation.

Starting the Fall 2009, faculty members will receive the DeansAwardforCommunityServiceforaveraging16
hours of community service per semester and the Deans Award for Outstanding Community Service for
averaging 20 hours of community service per semester. The faculty members receiving the awards will be
acknowledged at graduation.

There is a limit of 8 hours of community serviceforanyoneevent. Communityserviceeventsthatarepartof


an externship are not eligible to count towards this award. Any hours applied to coursework requirements are
not eligible to count towards the Deans Award. However, hours served in excess of these coursework
requirements may be applied towards this award.

GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTABLE HOURS

The following events are eligible for hours towards the Deans Awards:

1. Preparing or serving meals at homeless shelters or soup kitchens.
2. Coaching youth sports.
3. Tutoring or volunteering at non-profit schools or organizations.
4. Volunteering at a nursing home or hospital.
5. An unpaid, non-credited internship that takes place at a non-profit organization.
6. Services performed through church groups for non-profit organizations to serve a broader
community, such as a park clean-up or serving meals at a soup kitchen.

LIMITATIONS FOR ACCEPTABLE HOURS

The following events are not eligible for hours towards the Deans Awards:

1. Service completed for a for-profit organization.
2. Volunteer work on political campaigns.
3. Volunteer work done solely to promote a particular religious point of view. For example, teaching
Sunday School will not be considered for the Deans Award.
4. Any hours applied towards coursework requirements or externships.
5. Participation in charitable fundraising walkathons, runs, or other events of this nature will not be
considered as community service.

REQUIREMENTS F
OR T HE P ROGRAM

1. Students must fill out the attached Community Service Experience form in its entirety forformstobeapplied
towards the award. An explanation of the event and signature must be present.

2. The GROUP form must be used when multiple students are at the same event, filled out by the event
coordinator.

3. Students will be required to submit the Community Service Experience Form totheirclasscommunityservice
chair, SDA, or SDHA representative. Forms are NOT to be turned into the SDA office on the 6th floor.

4. Faculty members will be asked to submit their community service hours to the SDA office on the 6thflooror
via email to Iti Agarwal, iagarwal@umaryland.edu.

5. At the end ofeachacademicyear,thecommunityserviceclassrepresentativesandSDHArepresentativewillbe


responsible for providing the listofstudentswhohavereachedthebenchmarkstotheSDAcommunityservice
chair. This list will be passed on to the deans office and class presidents.
