Christmas Boxes 2017
Weve done a fantastic job in Watton in sending over 120 boxes last
year to children overseas living in poverty and so would have nothing
for Christmas. Last years' boxes were delivered to children in Central
Asia from Watton, delivered by the charity Samaritans Purse.
The Methodist Coffee Morning at the Watton Christian Community
Centre in the High Street is again acting as the collection centre for
Watton and the surrounding villages. Leaflets with details can be
collected on Wednesday mornings at the Methodist Coffee morning
and completed boxes there too. The last date for handing them in will
be mid-November; watch the November Wayland News for the
actual date. How about doing a box with with a friend or in a group?
Choose the gender and age group: 2-4. 5-9, 10-14. Suggestions for
filling - soft toys, games, soaps, flannels etc. Stationery: pencils,
coulouring books a full list is in the leaflets. Please avoid any war
related toys, powders or liquids. We hope you enjoy filling your box!
Christmas Market

Learn about
local wildlife
Thanks to funding from the National
Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund
(HLF), the community volunteering charity
TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) is
running a series of free short courses giving
people in central Norfolk the chance to
learn more about a wide range of different
flora and fauna, including bats, fungi and
mosses - as well as discovering how to take
great wildlife photos, and how to help
wildlife in the garden.
Some of the activities will take place out
in the field, starting with ecologist Rob
Coleman leading an evening bat walk at
Foxley Wood, giving people the rare
chance of exploring Norfolks largest
ancient woodland at night this takes
place on Wednesday 4th October at
6.30pm. Then at nearby Bawdeswell
Heath on 13th October at 11.15am there
will be a Mushroom Foray led by county
fungi recorder Tony Leech, giving people
the chance to find out more about these
curious organisms, and eat them if they
dare! Inside at Bawdeswell Village Hall
Jerry Kinsley will be showing some of his
stunning wildlife photos and sharing the
secrets of his success this is on
Wednesday 11th October at 7.45pm,
whilst back outside on Friday 10th
November Robin Stevenson will be
helping us find and identify some
fascinating if oft-forgotten plants, the
mosses: this last event starts at 11.15am
back at Foxley Wood.
We have been very lucky to get some
real experts who are also great
communicators to lead these sessions
said TCV project officer Mark Webster,
who will also be sharing his many years
of experience with a talk on wildlife
gardening at Bawdeswell Village Hall at
7.45pm on Wednesday 18th October,
so we hope that as many people as
possible can take advantage of these free
opportunities to learn about their local
wildlife.

Last Grand Second
Hand Book Sale of
the year
The final Grand Second Hand Book Sale
of the year at Griston Church will be on
Saturday 7th October, from 10am until
4pm. With the festive season in mind the
theme is Gifts & Crafts. We will have
unique and individual handmade gifts
for sale including clothing, household
items, and jewellery, plus all you need to
make your own such as beads, ribbons,
and card blanks. There will be a teddy
tombola at 50 pence a go with a prize
every time, and we are raffling a lovely,
fluffy, polar bear a stuffed one!
We are also offering for sale beautifully
packaged new and pre-loved gifts,
starting at just one pound, and lots of
new crafting kits to inspire you. All this
as well as HUNDREDS of second hand
books, with no book costing more than
1, and all a different selection to last
time, with a larger than usual choice of
crafting and seasonal titles.
There will of course be refreshments and
whole cakes and savouries for sale, plus
fresh filled rolls. We aim to cater for all
dietary requirements, including low fat,
gluten, and dairy free. Seating will be
available, so come along and have a
mardle in lovely surroundings, with a
hot drink and a good book. More
volunteers are always welcome, so
please get in touch if you could give us
an hour or two of your time. All

A Quick Look
Round

As October looms before us I can
look back on what I think was a pretty
good summer, with plenty of
sunshine, though with only an
occasional sound of the age-old old-
age cry of Its too hot for me.
Perhaps I am lucky to live in one of
the drier spots of the country because
the national papers tell me that the
summer was actually much wetter
than average over most of England,
though we all know that rain comes at
odd times at odd places, and often
when you are enjoying a lovely sunny
morning, the next village may be
enduring a deluge.
But weather apart it has certainly been
a colourful few months, with the reds
and greens of the temporary traffic
lights that have abounded, protecting
the great spate of road repairs, new
building sites and drainage
replacements schemes all around us.
It has also been a great time for
Festivals, the Watton one of which
you may have attended, but have you
noticed that the word has suddenly
become fashion-able, in many cases
replacing the words Fete, Show or
Exhibition, etc. ?
Not too long ago most of us only
knew it from the annual church
celebration of the gathering of the
harvest, though nowadays festivals of
music, drama, sport, films, and so on,
are on every calendar, sometimes with
the modern reversal of the
terminology with such events as Car-
fests, Rail-fests, etc.
Many readers will recall what was
probably one of the most spectacular
of all the Festival of Britain, which
told the world that Britain was back in
business after the Second World War.
Much public feeling has been
expressed over the cessation of the
bongingof Big Ben during the
period of repairs, and in the usual
British manner there was a crowd of
thousands gathered at Westminster to
hear the last chime. This national trait
is revealed whenever a last event
occurs, such as the closure of a
railway in the Beeching days, when
the very last train would be besieged
by hordes of people the very ones
whose desertion of the service helped
to cause the closure in the first place.
(Actually Big Ben may still ring out
arguments are ongoing).
The recent Bank Holiday produced
the usual crop of tales of woe from the
motorists who were held up in
enormous traffic jams, apparently
caught by surprise ! Surely by now
the nation must be aware that to travel
by road, rail or air at such times is
going to be beset with problems, the
answer being to holiday at home
wherever possible, and leave the
travelling to those who really have the
need, or where possible avoid the
motorways. A few years back wise
folks who really had to travel at such
times would set out in the early hours
when the roads were clear, but those
days are long gone and often jams
now occur in the middle of the night.
Unfortunately there is little that can be
done to alleviate these problems while
the supply of new cars each year
continually far outstrips the rate of
scrappage of older one, other than to
construct more lanes to existing
motorways and bypasses round
blackspots. But these measures take
years to complete and merely give a
temporary relief, at enormous costs.
Bypasses are the answer where traffic
overwhelms villages which are served
by roads built for the passage of
horses and carts, but proposals for
them are always the subject of
protests as the effect on existing
properties is considered.
At this moment a petition for a bypass
around Swaffham is being considered,
though while the through traffic is
always certainly very heavy, actual
jams rarely occur, and the other local for a new ADventure.

Of course an obvious way of dealing
with these problems would be the use
of tunnels, though impractical due to
the enormous cost, although one such
scheme has at last been sanctioned in
Wiltshire to replace the section of the

years, and will alleviate the delays
that have affected the area for so long,
the main objections coming from
archaeologists who feared a tunnel
could cause subsidence which could
lead to the 5000- year- old monument
to fall down.
It would also mean that it would no
longer be seen by the thousands of
holiday-makers on their way to Devon
and Cornwall, and mean that anyone
wishing to see it will need to pay at
the Heritage centre, which is rather
amusing to me personally, since it
brings back war-time memories of
early morning runs from the nearby
artillery camp, which used the famous
stones as the southerly turning
point and no fee to be paid !
Actually perhaps the excavations may
bring to light many other ancient
remains, which will keep the
archaeologist happy for years.
Other national news suggests that
more budgetary cuts will mean even
fewer bobbies on the beat in future.
But is that really such a bad thing ?
For after all the police are always in
touch by radio and can be raised at
short notice, and a
beat copper is always in plain view,
so that a wily thief will simply wait
until he or she is out of range. It
would appear that the only real use is
one of giving a show of presence to
boost public confidence.
As I look elsewhere my attention falls
on the notices that precede every
television drama to warn us that This
programme may contain bad
language.
This notice seems superfluous as
these days EVERY drama is so
constructed that it has so many words
that not long ago would have
completely un-acceptable in most
circles. I am sure we all are guilty of
an occasional rude word, but one does
not have to be a prude to find the
current offerings a bit too much. Or
am I getting too old ?

Perhaps there will be people whod
like to consider St Marys Choir now
that the organ has been rebuilt and
restored to a state of the art
instrument, through the generosity of
church, community and grants.
Maybe budding musicians or some
who have laid down their instruments
would like to consider picking them
up again.
ADventure is a great place to make
new friends, have some fun in
learning and growing together. On our
first Sunday 1st October, Harvest
Thanksgiving gifts will be going to

The impact of
World War Two on
Wayland
Another Exciting Research Project Planned
For Wayland
Now that our team of researchers from across
Wayland has rested from their exertions
discovering the impact WWI had on Wayland,
we are putting together a plan for a new project.
This time a bid to Heritage Lottery Fund to
help finance a follow on project discovering
what impact WW2 had on the Wayland area.
It is over twenty years since we began studying
the history of Wayland, beginning with
Unlocking Our Histories, the Churches of
Wayland which was funded by European
funds, Heritage Lottery and others. Rather than
repeat the sort of information found in many
other publications, we focused on what made
each church unique and the people and stories
which helped make them unique. We not only
produced a beautiful glossy book on eighteen
local churches, published in 2004, but held a
series of church tours, hosting as many as 53-
seater coaches full. We still get asked to
conduct tours, most recently as part of holiday
breaks at Barnham Broom, with a new one
taking bookings for 2018. The books are still
available for viewing in each of our churches
and are on sale in the Dragonfly Gallery. The
project attracted a number of awards, beginning
with winning local and then regional heritage
awards, and finishing by becoming runners up
for a National award when we were invited to
attend a very prestigious event in Ramsey in
Hampshire. Not at all bad for a group of
volunteers!
During the project we had quickly realised that,
of course, none of the churches existed in
isolation and that the location in
village or town was a key part of
the history. As with all research
projects, we had been left with a
wealth of information we couldnt
use in the book as well as avenues
we had not been able to explore.
People on the tours often ask
questions about the wider history
and, although we had often
uncovered many of the answers
we could see that more research
was needed. This led to the
working up of a new bid to
Heritage Lottery. The aim of this
second project was quite
ambitious. We wanted to tell the
story of each village and Watton
from as far back as we could,
hoping to show how and why each
had developed and changed over
time but also, once again, focusing
on the people who had shaped
their community. We planned a
book on each community and the
employment of a heritage officer
to co-ordinate it all. The result of
our bid was to be awarded
124,000 from Heritage Lottery
funds for a three year project. We
planned to create a printed record
backed with information events
and talks. The end result was 13
books, one on each village, under
the banner of Capturing Our
Wayland Heritage. We researched,
wrote, printed and bound the
books ourselves and continue to
reproduce them. The project was
completed in 2011 with a major
exhibition at the Wells Cole
Centre. Once again we are
tremendously proud of what a
group of local volunteers can
achieve. So, if you want to learn
more about the area in which you
live these are good sources of
information. Each book contains a
DVD of additional information,
maps and photos which could not
be included in the books. As with
the church books they are available
on sale in the Dragonfly Gallery or
reception at Wayland House.
Once again we were left with some
topics which we felt needed more
research than our remit had allowed.
Heritage Lottery announced a fund
for research into aspects of WWI.
They had made it clear that they did
not wish to fund endless repetition of
research into solely the men but
wanted bids that reflected something
different. Our approach at looking at
what shaped our area and the impact
of people and events was exactly
what they wanted. We applied for
and were granted 10,000 to research
the impact WWI had had on
Wayland, which was then a very
isolated and close-knit rural
community. Taking advantage of
modern technology we published the
books with an online publisher. We
held a very successful two day
exhibition and commemoration at the
Sports Centre which culminated in one of the
most moving commemorations I have attended.
We uncovered some fascinating information
and insights into life here at the time as well as
the experiences the men who served endured.
The books, The Impact of World War One on
Wayland are on sale at the Dragonfly Gallery
or Wayland House reception.
We are aware of two approaching
anniversaries: in 2019 it will be 80 years since
the Declaration of War in 1939 and, in 2020, 75
years since the end of the war in 1945. It seems
an opportune moment to look into the impact
this world war had on Wayland. We shall be
looking at the differences in impact this war
had compared with WWI, but once again we
also expect to look at the impact on women,
families, children and education, food and daily
life, farming, the experiences of the men,
attitudes to the war, and more as it emerges.
Although we had an airfield (built in Carbrooke
but named RAF Watton because almost all
RAF bases were named after the nearest
railway station) we do not intend this to be a
focus solely on the history of the airfield but to
be a wider look at what a second world war
meant to the people of Wayland.
When looking back on the more recent
achievements of our local heritage group we
should also be mindful of the research and
publications which have also been produced by
local people and which add a great deal to the
picture of Wayland, and especially Watton,
over time. I am sure many can add more titles,
but we can name a few here. Grandads
Watton by Cecil Chapman looks mainly at the
period from 1920 to 1935 and so fills the gap
nicely between the wars as to what Watton was
like at that time. This book is available online
for a very interesting read. Another interesting
read also available online is Watton Through
the Ages by George Jessup which looks at
Wattons wider history. In addition to online
publications the Pentecostal church website has
a wonderful collection of articles with
photographs of Watton in the past for those
who are interested in what Watton used to be
like. Also online is the excellent website
devoted to RAF Watton which can be found on
www.rafwatton.info In Saham Toney Robin
Brown wrote Shadows on the Summer Grass
and in Thompson Rev G Crabbe wrote Some
Materials for a History of the parish of
Thompson published posthumously in 1892
but can be read online. All of these
publications and others have been used as
valuable sources to help the Heritage Group
and those of us living here in later years to
understand the area.
In recent months a number of our Wayland
churches have been in dire need of restoration
and several have successfully bid to Heritage
Lottery, while others are still in the process, for
the funds needed. It is a requirement of such
funding that heritage activities take place
alongside the building programme. We hope
that the experience of working on such a range
of heritage projects has helped to give members
of these Wayland communities the confidence
to pursue such ambitious and successful
undertakings.
We plan to add to this long record with The
Impact of World War Two on Wayland. We
especially need those interested in researching
life in Watton at the time to join us. If you are

Blossom & Yarn 2017 Watton Country Market

With over 3,500 people attending the
2017 event, the second was even
more successful than the first one
which was staged in 2015. People
came from far and wide, including
coach parties, children, in fact,
people of all ages. They all delighted
in in the theme of this years event,
The Creation.
Each of the six churches was a mass
of colour with creative knitting,
crochet work, inspired craftwork and
all complemented with fresh flower
arrangements. No one could help but
marvel at the craftsmanship that went
into every single item on display,
from the Octopus to the Angels, from
the Meerkats to the Strawberry beds,
many of them crafted from 10cm
knitted squares. There were over
15000 knitted squares, all of which
had then to be transformed into a
character, an animal, a tree, a flower,
or something equally as creatively
wonderful.
The main objective of the event was
to raise funds for each of the six
churches Breckles, Caston, Great
Hockham, Stow Bedon
Thompson and that was achieved
with the generous participation of
those who attended, our sponsors and
advertisers and those who gave their
time and energy towards the large
total raised as a consequence.
Very soon, in readiness, for
Christmas, there will be 2018

Chloe Jennings, Senior Education Officer from Banham Zoo came
to our August meeting together with her Royal Python. She gave a
fascinating and informative talk about the work at the zoo. Banham
Zoo has been here for 49 years. She told us of the areas the zoo was
involved in. One being the conservation of endangered species,
some taking place at the zoo and some outside. The snow leopards
successfully bred at Banham zoo have been introduced into India.
They are working on supporting lemurs which are critically
endangered. To assist the conservation of cheetahs in Botswana the
zoo is working with farmers helping to protect their livestock by
buying them guard dogs. These are to protect the farmers stock
from the cheetahs thereby stopping the farmers from hunting the
cheetahs. Two more areas the zoo is concerned with are research and
education, having over 2000 children a year visiting the zoo.
Banham Zoo has over 125 species which is over 3000 individual
animals and insects but this includes 1500 cockroaches! Chloe
concluded her talk by introducing her python to anyone who wanted
to get up close to this beautiful creature. The speaker in October will
be Leonard A. Priestley with tales of a removal man.
The No 1 pub lunch group will be going to The Red Lion at
Hockwold on Thursday 12 October. The No 2 pub lunch group
will be going to Little Melton on Tuesday 31 October.
At the meeting it was announced that the holiday venue for 2018
will be Paignton.
A group of members visited Kirstead Hall at the beginning of
September. We were shown round part of the house and the
ancient dovecote in the grounds finishing with a cup of tea and
cakes.

Two interesting speakers in the past few
weeks: on 31st August, Mark Webster,
coordinator of the mid-Norfolk group of
countryside & wildlife volunteers, was
introduced by Mike Botting, himself a
conservation volunteer. Mark gave a
spirited talk on his work involving many of
our nearby woods & ponds. Some are not
well known to the public and, although
accessible, can be quite difficult to find. At
our meeting of 14th September, we were
visited by Rotarians from Swaffham and
Felixstowe Rotary Clubs and we were all
entertained by a fascinating illustrated talk
by Geoff Ray, the pharmacist director and
founder of the excellent Total Health
facility near Watton Medical Practice.
Geoff described his preparations for, and
participation in, this year's Marathon Des
Sables, which involved over a 1000 souls
running across the desert in Morocco over
5 days in April. A full report on his
adventure was published in an earlier
edition of this paper. We were pleased to
present Geoff with a cheque for 200 to
add to over 7,500 he'd already collected
for Cancer Research through sponsorship.
On September 3rd and 9th the club was
involved with the Carnival and Military
Vehicles day. The first day was about
fundraising with our ever-popular bottle
straw draw whilst, the on the 9th, we were
showing what Rotary does - including a
demonstration of a ShelterBox tent and
contents. Some 85 million people have
been made homeless by natural disasters
this year, and, as I write, there are 1,000
ShelterBoxes & ShelterKits on, or en route
to, the devastated Caribbean islands; the
logistical hurdles in these undertakings are
enormous, and its all done by volunteers!
The club is donating the cost of a
ShelterBox from our Trust Fund; the net
profits from our early September activities,
317, will help to pay for it. A little bit of
that sum was achieved through maggot
racing on the Military Vehicles day - every
little helps! Pictures can be seen on our

Thursday 12th Oct 11 am to 6pm. Bowls equipment

The club has seen an increase in members entering leagues
this season and a increase in Roll Ups. Regular coaching
sessions for beginners are regularly organized plus
Advanced courses.
We have a active Junior section which meets every Friday

Carbrooke Concert in the Church
A beautiful fine summer evening
welcomed everybody as they arrived to
enjoy the concert on Friday 25th August..
Guests, as they entered the church
grounds, were welcomed by a piper in a
fine kilt playing a selection of Scottish
tunes. The piper ushered people towards
the main West Door of the church where
they were greeted by two mounted police
officers each sitting on magnificent
horses. They were supported by a
further officer, but nobody could work
out why they were there.
After enjoying Prosecco and canaps,
people had begun to make their way to
their seats, only to be stopped and
requested to make a large clearance
around the font. The police officer, in
full uniform, marched into the church

Eirlys Johnson, Funeral Director, was
our speaker in September. We were so
pleased that she was able to visit us,
along with her son Ben, despite her busy
schedule. Eirlys gave us an extremely
interesting talk beginning from when she
began working in her Father's heavy
plant hire business in Saham Toney,
through to how she began her own
Funeral Company. Eirlys has now been
a funeral director for 25 years and her
eldest son, Ben, is about to follow in her
footsteps starting his apprenticeship in
his Mother's business soon. Eirlys
answered many questions from our
members and was warmly thanked by us
all.

October 9th 10.15 am, at the Pentecostal
Church, Watton (whom we thank for the
generous use of their facilities). Please

Playgroup
Sunday 3rd September was Carnival day
in Watton. It was a lovely dry day and
we had a stall selling unused and
donated toys trying to raise funds for the
carrying the St John Ambulance Service
Maltese Cross to the front of the font. He
was followed carefully by the two large,
majestic mounted horses which placed
themselves each side of the font. People
were astounded at the spectacle and soon
became aware of its relevance. The police
horses were enacting the right for a Knight
to take the Maltese Cross around the font
once a year; a right which probably had not
been exercised for about nine hundred
years. This is linked to the Knights
Hospitallers and the Order of St John, part
of Carbrookes eleventh century history
and, in recent years, evolved into the St
John Ambulance Service that we know
today.
After that excitement, everybody enjoyed a
stunning concert. Prior to Emma Nuule,
playgroup. We managed to raise a grand
total of 79.80 which will go towards
purchasing presents for the children at
Christmas.We run from the Youth &
Community Centre, Harvey Street,
Watton, 8.45am to 11.45am, Monday to
Friday term time only. We still have
places available for anyone who is
looking for somewhere to send their

West Norfolk
Aviation Society
Paul Jackson was the speaker at the
meeting of the West Norfolk Aviation
Society this month. His two hour talk,
entitled Britain's Nuclear Deterrent, was
a cleverly interwoven piece of work
which captured the political and
technical developments during the
period just after WW2 and, up to the
present day. For those of us who have
lived through this period we should
perhaps consider ourselves extremely
fortunate that we remained blissfully
ignorant of some of the details
surrounding military and political
ineptitude. The picture Paul painted
suggested that it was only by a great deal
of luck that any of us survived..Fate
is the Hunter. Pauls incredible research
into the history of these events is
our star soprano taking the stage, she was
supported by the Harmonettes. These are
a group of five ladies singing Acapella and
took the crowd by storm with their range
and repertoire. Emma followed and took
full advantage of the wonderful acoustics
of the church with her powerful rendition
of many popular classics. After three
encores, she was eventually able to end her
wonderful performance of what was a very
successful evening.
The concert had been organised jointly to
celebrate the granting of Heritage
Lottery Funds to Ovington Church
during the year, and the hoped-for funds
for Carbrooke, who are awaiting the
HLF decision. There was a call for a
further concert the same time next year.

Cartoons
The Inner Wheel Club of Watton are
putting on one of their popular afternoon
events in the Queens Hall on Friday,
October 20th from 2.30p.m. when Mark
Reynolds alias MARKO will be talking
about his life as a cartoon artist. Mark is
a great raconteur and the afternoon will
be full of fun, with demonstrations,
anecdotes, impressions and plenty of
name-dropping. See how cartoons can
come to life with very simple lines!
Markos talk will be followed by a
splendid afternoon tea with plenty of
homemade scones, cakes and other
goodies provided by the ladies of the
Inner Wheel. Tickets cost 8 and can be

in July and the first meeting started
off with a great treat when new
President Lesley Cowling
introduced Jane Clamp as her
music teacher 'extraordinaire'. Jane
entertained the assembled
members and visitors on the piano,
flute, clarinet and saxophone. Her
repertoire was varied from little
known classical pieces to very well
known songs. A rendering of the
Moonlight Sonata lost many in the
feeling and expression of the
moment.
Jane's reminisences of her
childhood piano lessons was
amusing and told of her journey
from pupil to the music teacher she
would become. A clamour for an
encore brought the playing of
Misty on the saxophone which she
described as her favourite
instrument

Garden Club
The 2017 AGM was David Green's last as Chairman and,
as such, his annual report was a reflection of the last 7
years. Many in the audience of 58 were not members
when David took up the post in September 2010. At that
time the membership numbered about 20 and the Club
had just moved from Ashill Community Centre to The
Pavilion at Holme hale. This move appears to have been
instrumental in the growth of the Club which now has
over 90 members, 80% of whom live outside the Ashill
and Holme Hale boundaries. David took the opportunity
to thank all those who had given their time and expertise
to the various tasks which have helped to make the Club
such a success. This includes not only the important posts
of Treasurer and Secretary but also catering, plant sales,
the flower show, raffle, outings, speakers, newsletter,
publicity and web site.
David paid a particular tribute to John Vincent, who was
founder and first Chairman of the Club. We are delighted,
therefore, that John has agreed to be our first President.
The election of a new Chairman was not so straight
forward. In the absence of any other nominees David
Priestley agreed to take the title of Chairman in addition to
being Treasurer. When necessary he will be assisted in the
running of meetings by various members of the
Management Committee.
Following the AGM, the winners in the Vegetable Show
were announced. Best in show went to Wendy Churchill
for five mixed vegetables. The most unusual entry must
have been five striped grape sized fruit which are,
apparently, a cross between a cucumber and a melon. The
day ended with an auction of the entries. Richard
Leighton, aka the auctioneer, did a great job whipping up
competition between the bidders and raising some
additional funds for the Club. David Green was presented
with a gift in recognition of his hard work for the Club
and we look forward to his continuing involvement as a
member, who, no doubt, will sit at the back and heckle!

the Wayland Memory Cafe in
Watton. The Music was provided
by The 2 Johns on violin and
piano accordion. Singing for those
living with memory loss is a way
of joining in with others. Also
gives a feeling of wellbeing and

Well I dont know where the
summer has gone this year but
winter now seems to be on the
horizon and its time to get those
outside job finished before its too
late, this week some of the guys
have been up on the workshop
roof clearing years vegitation that
has been allowed to grow out of
control and causing some damp
in the walls with this now done
its one less thing to worry about,
well done lads a job well done
and dusted.
Its hard to believe its been nearly
a year since we moved into The
Old School House in Church
Walk, when we moved in the
building was begining to look
very tired and run down but over
these past months its seems to
have come alive again with all
the coming and going, the
activity and the banter when the
members get together the old
building seems to have a new
lease of life and long may it
continue.
On the 9th September we attended
the "Military Day" at St Marys
Church,Watton, luckily the weather
held but it was overcast with sunny
spells,we had our stand there and
our mini Marquee (just in case!)
sadly it was not attended as much
as we hoped with so many people
putting in so much work it would
have been nice to have more
support from the local population,
at around 3pm with it becoming
quiet we decided to call it a day no
sooner had we packed everything
away than the heavens opened,we
were lucky but some stall holder
were caught out in the open and at
the mercy of the weather.

Chips half way thru) Malcolm
organized earlier in the year proved
to be very popular so another one is
being arranged for the 20th of
October this time we will be
limited to 30 people as last time
pvoved to be too crowded when we
had 40 people attending.

be very popular with several
members attending each time, we
meet up at 12.30 -1pm on
Wednesdays the next Luncheon is

of the Royal
British Legion
This last month has been quite a busy
one for the branch. Some of our
members attended a Branch
Information day at North Walsham
where they heard from speakers from
many sections of The Legion telling
us exactly how The Legion helps the
armed forces community. The
Legion is not very good at blowing
its own trumpet and all the good
work they do is left to peoples
imagination. It is really about time
that The Royal British Legion told
the country what they did to help the
armed forces community.
Some of the services are the
provision of care homes for the
elderly, break centres, financial
advice, transitioning into civvie
street, respite and recovery,
employment, remembrance and
campaigning for change. Some of
these services may be delivered by us
or things such as breaks by our
partners such as Haven or Centre
Parcs. Although our members were
aware of what The Legion can
provide some of the facts and figures
were astonishing.
Looking at the figures published for
the year end of 2016, The Legion
spends approx. 49.3 million pounds
each year on welfare services. This
does not include the 26.1 million
that is spent on care homes and break
centres. The amounts are staggering
and I dont think the general public
realises just how much money is
involved. This is where the money
from the poppy collection every
November goes. Did you know this?
On a different more social note our
lunch club went for Afternoon Tea
with our Padre at The Vicarage. The
tea, sandwiches and cake went down
a storm. The weather was just right
and the vicarage garden a lovely
setting. We give our thanks to Revd
Gerry Foster for the very pleasant
afternoon. Our next outing will be
on Friday 27 October to The
Richmond Park Golf Club. Let me
know if you would like to come.
We had a stall at the Military Vehicle
event at St Marys church on the 9
September. The rain held off until
near the end so we were very lucky.
This is the first stall we have had in a
long time. We were not there to
fundraise but to raise the awareness
of the local populace that Watton and
District branch is still here,
fundraising comes later!!
Slowly but surely we are getting new
members. There is still a long way to
go for us to be classed as a thriving
branch. The more members we have
the more we can offer them. If you
are interested please come along and
join us. You do not need to be a
serving or ex serving member of the
armed forces; anyone can join as
long as they would like to support the
aims of The Legion. We really are a
good bunch!!! We meet every 3rd
Tuesday of the month. If you want

In Your Garden
with Lotta Potts
Well September turned into November rather
quickly didnt it? Last year we had a very hot
spell - 34deg. C on 12th and this year
overcoats at the ready and wondering about
the proximity of a frost. They always say that
if you dont like our weather just give it a few
minutes. So what can we expect/hope for in
October? Anything at all I suppose. So all
we can do is make a bit of a plan and see
where it gets us. At the moment I feel a good
plan would be to raise the drawbridge
(figuratively speaking) and hibernate. Come
the beginning of October it might change to
everybody outside in tee shirts and have a
picnic.
Even more depressing than the weather is the
prospect that most of the next few months in
the garden will be dark, damp and very likely
cold. The clocks go back this month as well
so if you have to work long hours your time in
the garden will be very limited. Oh dear.
Come on Lotta things will be better than that!
Concentrate on October.
It can, indeed, be a golden month with tree
foliage in full glorious flight as the plants shut
down for recuperation in the winter. Acers are
the best example of this as they really show off
in all colours of the yellow to red range. The
glory of these is they come in all sizes to suit
small gardens (even in large containers) up to
the biggest estates. Other plants that shine are
those with berries. Perhaps the best-known are
the pyracanthas with yellow, orange or red
berries after beautiful spring blossom. They are
also known for their vicious thorns but these
might be the reason birds tend to leave the
berries until late in the year, benefiting the
owner with a longer display. The tangutica
varieties of clematis are still going in October
although their best month is supposed to be
September. Look out for them in nurseries as
they have small yellow flowers with purple
middles and huge seed-heads. Many people
grow them for the show of seed-heads as they
are spectacular silky explosions of white and
they very often come alongside the flowers.
Theres quite a variety of flowers to grow this
month. Check back on September as many
plants flowering then will carry on through
October and maybe longer. Michaelmas daisies,
colchicums, cyclamen hederifolium, dahlias,
sternbergia lutea.
Perennials should be cut back after flowering so
they dont trail all over the place and make a
mess. Its quite astonishing how much compost
can be had from one or two geranium plants.
These may still produce the very occasional
flower but its really not worth keeping all the
messy bits for the sake of them. Roses should
be half-pruned to prevent wind rock. Just
reduce the stems by about a third and leave the
technical stuff until March. Shrubs like tall
lavatera and buddleja will benefit from a prune
as their whippy branches will flail about in
winters strong wind and worse, will split
allowing disease in. Pruning them will also
reduce the need of sweeping up their leaves. On
the subject of leaves, these will come down in
large numbers once we have a good old autumn
gale. This lets us have the childhood fun of
scuffing through the heaps of them but they
wont do the lawn any good. Rake them up, put
them in bin bags, pierce some holes in the bags
and leave well alone until next year when you
will have lovely leaf-mould. Once youve
rescued the lawn remove any leaves from the
crowns of perennials as if left rot will set in.
Leaves can be left on borders as this will give
the worms a bit of exercise and will improve the
soil.
If you didnt manage to do the autumn
maintenance on the lawn in September, now is
the last opportunity to do the raking up of thatch
and moss, spiking and topdressing on a fine day.
There shouldnt be any need to mow now so
although the lawn will look awful for a while,
once the topdressing has been washed into the
holes made by spiking the grass will carry on
slowly until spring. Of course if we have an
exceptionally mild winter it might be necessary
to keep mowing right through but not frequently
thank goodness.
It used to be the case that border renovation
was carried out in October removing entire
clumps, splitting and re-planting but these
days as there are so many plants that keep
going until first frosts its now quite
acceptable to leave this task until spring. The
downside of this is that there are so many
things to do in spring it can get left until the
clumps are so over-grown they dont flower
as well as they might. Guilty as charged on
that one. Maybe compromise is the answer
and do some now by dealing with plants that
are over for the year and leave the still-
productive ones until spring. One good thing
about gardening, its very flexible. Not all
plants need to be dug up and split every year
but keep an eye on them. When the clump is
too big there will be a gap in the middle and
the outside will be falling away. Dig it up,
split it by either putting two garden forks in
back to back and pull them apart. If you dont
have two garden forks (not many people do)
just drive a spade through the middle and cut
this part away and dump it. The rest can then
be split into however many pieces you want as
long as they have plenty of feeding roots the
nice fine ones and a bit of shoot. Give them a
decent planting hole to encourage them to get
their roots out into the surrounding soil but
save the fertilizer until spring. You dont
need thin sappy growth now as any sort of a
frost will kill it. If you create a gap, have a
look round the sheds or nurseries to see what
plants are available. Some may still have a
sale of perennials going on so take advantage.
Keep planting bulbs. The daffodils should
have gone in in September but can still be
planted in the ground or containers and late
October is the start of the planting season for
tulips and hyacinths. If you have heavy soil it
might be as well to plant in containers.
Back to the housework. October is the time
we are recommended to clean the greenhouse.
You need old clothes, a bucket of warm water
and some disinfectant Jeyes Fluid is
reliable. Wash down the glass and make sure
to scrub the glazing bars and places where
glass panels overlap as these areas collect dirt
and insects looking for a cosy place to spend
the winter. Then wash down the outside. I
think it goes without saying that a nice, fine,
dry day is required. As a bonus give the pots
a wash as well. It is recommended that as a
final touch you should fumigate the
greenhouse by lighting a sulphur candle and
closing the door quickly. Leave it for several
hours until the smoke has subsided and the
fumes dispersed before opening up again. I
have to stress I have never, ever, tried this; I
am just passing on advice from my guru Mr.
T. If you have plants over-wintering in the
greenhouse it might be as well to use bubble-
wrap to insulate it. There is a horticultural
version as opposed to the industrial type but
have never seen the difference.
For vegetable growers, harvest just about
everything now. The main crop potatoes
should be dug up and stored before the slugs
get to them but carrots and parsnips are better
left in the ground and dug fresh as required.
However, if you have a heavy soil or its very
wet its better to dig them up by the middle of
November and store. Ah, pumpkins and
squashes. Wait as long as you dare before
harvest. This is a hold your breath exercise
as they will continue to ripen but a proper
frost or very damp weather may well ruin
them so get them under cover. The big thing
about planting in October is alliums: onions,
shallots and garlic, although this last can wait
until November. Well worth doing.
So now theres a lot of bare soil winter
digging time. If you dont do this every year
or have raised beds then just turn it slightly
and mulch with compost or spent grow bags
or compost from containers you have emptied.
Even if you have dug or mulched you still
need to keep weeding.

God and the Christian faith. It doesn't matter if
you go to church every week or have never
stepped into a church in your life; we will all
learn something new.
What? Alpha is a series of sessions exploring
the basics of the Christian faith.
Run over ten weeks, each session looks at a
different question that people can have about
faith and is designed to create conversation. Its
just an open, informal and honest space to
explore and discuss lifes big questions
together.
Our Alpha evening will begin as all good
evenings do, with food and a chance to meet
others on the same journey of exploration. After
big issues around faith and unpack the basics of
Christianity, addressing questions such as Who
is Jesus? and How can I have faith?
After the video we will have the chance to share
thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply
discuss it in a small group. Theres no
obligation to say anything and theres nothing
you cant say. You will not be judged and you
can even say that you don't believe, it's your
chance to be who you are whilst learning about
what others believe. Its a wonderful
opportunity to hear from others and contribute
your own perspective in an honest, friendly and
open environment.
When? The course is only 10 weeks long, every
Wednesday evening from and including the 4th
October 2017. We begin with supper at 7.00pm.

evening in aid of the Mitrofanoff Support
Group, has been arranged at The Wells Cole
Ctn., Saham Toney IP25 7HD. It will be hosted
by Penny Francis from Saham Hills and Chris
Jacobs from Stamford, Lincs. Both are
International Mediums and will be giving a
demonstration of Clairvoyance for all to enjoy!
Penny and Chris are both giving their time in
aid of this charity for free. Due to popularity

There will be a raffle with donations from local
people and businesses, the bar will be open and

The Mitrofanoff Support Group was formed as
a registered charity in 2010 by Kyla Rogers to
give support and back up to those with
congenital bladder problems, nerve damage
and prostate or bladder cancer once having
under gone this very complex operation known
as a mitrofanoff. A young Watton resident,
who is doing well, underwent this surgery last
year and the money is being raised as a Thank
You for all the support that was received both
here and in other cases locally.
The support offered is to all involved in
whatever capacity and they do so by telephone,
social media, Skype and meetings. This
support is invaluable and unobtainable
elsewhere. The Society has had backing from
fund raising and various companies over the
years but after 7 years they are now begining to
struggle financially.
There are many posters within Watton shops
and Library for further information. Tickets are
already selling, so we hope to see you there!
The HAPPY Project
Well! The summer holidays for most people
are over, the children are back to school and it
will soon be Christmas!
The HAPPY Project is still very busy and I am
enjoying delivering the service. I was sad
however, that I missed the date for publication
in September because I was on Grandma
duties. We looked after Katie and Thomas
whilst their parents attended a wedding, I had
just relaxed one evening, having had a busy
day with the children. We had completed the
night time routine of bath time, stories and
cleaning teeth and into bed when a little voice
called Grandma, so off I trotted upstairs and
this little boy with wide eyes, said Grandma,
what do Scorpions eat? I said Do you mean
you have brought me all the way upstairs to
ask that, we will talk about it in the morning .
. . so answers on a postcard, please.
Less of my diverse ramblings, what have we
been up to with The HAPPY Project? We had
a very busy time at The Wayland Show, lots of
people enjoyed making bracelets and
decorating sun visors and masks. It was such a
fun day.
The Watton Carnival was also a wonderful day
we chatted lots of folk and all in all had a very
good day. The Town was buzzing with people,
we were challenged by the windy weather that
threatened to blow the Gazebo away, but we
survived!
The Family Art and Craft Group unfortunately,
didnt operate in August because the HAPPY
Helpers all had commitments so we do
apologise for that hiatus, but we are back in
business now. The next meeting will be the
second Saturday in October in Ashill
Community Centre from 10:00 to 12:00, we
hope to see you there. We have some
interesting ideas of autumn crafts to try as well
as some suggestions from the children. In
September, the children enjoyed making
amongst other things, Gingerbread men, they
also celebrated one of the childrens birthdays
with chocolate cake, thank you for that
Rosemary!
I dont often talk about the Mens Shed
because Richard keeps everyone informed of
their events, but two events I must mention
were the first aid courses that I arranged for
them. Both sessions were very different but
such fun watching them put one another in the
recovery position and rifling through first aid
boxes to decide what the correct components
were. Thank you to Mark from First Aiducate
for delivering those two courses and to Babaco
who provided us with a delicious lunch. The
Shed members now have the knowledge to
deal with an emergency should one happen.
Please remember that the Bereavement Caf is
still taking place on the last Thursday in the
month at Babaco on the High Street from 4:00
to 6:00 if you feel you would like some support
after the death of a loved one.
There are some exciting new developments in
the Project. We are planning to start a new
craft group at The Grange in Great
Cressingham, once again open to all. If you
knit, sew, crochet, make cards or any craft at
all, come and join us for our first meeting on
Thursday 5th October 2017 from 2:00pm to
4:00pm, we will be discussing what we would
like to do and how often the group will operate.
It is free, there will be cake as well as tea and
coffee. Come and stay the whole two hours or
just drop in for a short period of time.

Bowls Club
Watton Bowls Club have completed another
season with mixed results. Playing in three
leagues, the County EBA, the Ashill & District
Mixed League and the Age Concern League,
they finished in last position in all leagues.
Although with the membership of 33 there
were occasions when, unfortunately, it was
difficult to field a full team.
At the end of August there was the annual
charity day of bowling followed by a BBQ.
The grand total of 300 was raised for EACH,
the childrens hospice. This included the
money donated from Rons President day.
The club competitions were completed as
scheduled. In the Anniversary Triples, Pat
Prior, Jim Adams and Graham Vellam won all
three of their round robin matches and with the
best shot difference were the declared winners.
In the 2 Wood Pairs played during July there
were winners of the two leagues which resulted
in a play-off final on the BBQ day. Pat Prior
and Kevin Simpson came out as the winners
against Jim Adams and John Hunter. Finals
day in September started with the Open
Singles. Charles Newman champion in 2010
could not on this occasion overcome the
younger man Kevin Wilson who won by 21-
10. The 4 Wood Pairs saw the holders Kevin
Wilson and John Hunter retaining their trophy
by beating Sonia and Richard Exley 25-9.
Bradenham proved the better team over the
two legs played home and away in the Ashby
Shield. They had resounding wins in both
matches and thereby held onto the shield for
another year.
The season is finally ending on Sunday 24th
September.
The Saturday 10.00 am coffee mornings started
on the 16th September and will continue
throughout the close season until April 2018. A
warm welcome awaits anyone new to the area
or to anyone thinking of maybe taking up
bowling. The health experts recommended this
sociable sport for both physically and mental
attributes.
The Annual General Meeting is being held in
the club room at the Sports Centre on Tuesday
17th October at 2.00 pm. The Presentation
dinner is at Broom Hall on Saturday 28th
October at 7.00pm

Society
Our annual Autumn Show was held on
Saturday 2nd September and what a glorious
day it was. At this point I must thank Les for
making our set-up very easy and stress-free.
Once the hall was ready we had 18 people
through the door with 156 exhibits. I dont
need to trawl the archives to know that that is
definitely a record. It was particularly
satisfying to see that quite a few new members
had entered and long may that last. As a judge
once said to me without the village shows
there would be no Chelsea. That doesnt bear
thinking about! The lovely weather also
brought in a larger number than usual of guests
who joined us for tea and a look round at the
exhibits. If any of you are reading this please
come and see us on a third-Thursday-in-the-
month meeting. We do try to make these
evenings (7.30pm start) as interesting as
possible, with a mix of gardening and social
events. We are winding up this year for open
meetings, the next (and last for 2017) being
16th November when we shall be treated to a
travel talk, which may or may not include a
few garden visits in far-flung places.

Watton Evening WI
How enchanting to see so many turn
out for this years Carnival. The
costumes were terrific and it was
delightful to see families enjoying the
beautiful sunny day. We had a great time
speaking to all those who visited our stall
manned by members, hopefully winning
tombola prizes and the childrens bran
tubs all prepared by the Craft Group. The
Craft Group are now preparing gifts and
prizes for the Festive Market and
learning new skills along the way.
Murder came to Watton in the guise of a
Murder Mystery Trail at our last meeting.
Teams wandered the streets following
clues to discover the murderer and
weapon used all culminating in a prize
draw and refreshments. Those members
whose mobility was impaired used an
adapted version using photographs of the
clues. Our committee provide us with an
extremely varied programme and
members are intrigued as to the topic of
our next speaker, the title being Miss
Whiplash on 12th October.
Congratulations to the victorious team
who represented our Branch at the
challenge match of Boules against
Thompson. The practice sessions
certainly paid off. So thats, one win to
Thompson for the Rounders and one win
to Watton for the Boules. Wonder what
the next challenge will be?
Members visited a new venue for the

Gardening Club
West acre Gardens: On Wednesday
August 24th we managed to have our
(re-scheduled) visit to West Acre
Gardens near Kings Lynne. On this
occasion the water was not coming out
of the sky in buckets, although the sun
didnt show until later on.
West Acre gardens was originally the
kitchen garden of West Acre High
House, but for the last 25 years has
been operated as a separate enterprise
by John and Sue Tuite. West Acre High
House was built in 1756 and was
bought by the artist Anthony Gormley
(Angel of the North) about six years

On arrival we were greeted by John
Tuite who took us on a guided tour.
The wall of the garden is in the layout
of the letter D with the straight
element running east/west. Walled
gardens allow plants to be grown
outside all year round that would
otherwise be killed by the British
winter; however, walls of these
proportions might be better described
as fortifications. The wall in itself was
Lunch Club this month, Kings Caf,
Shipdham. Afternoon Tea was enjoyed as a
late lunch. Im sure we will be repeating
this in the future - the staff were very
friendly and the Afternoon Tea delicious.
Always nice to visit somewhere different to
broader our horizons.
The Walking Group are progressing along
the Peddars Way and have now moved on
to Swaffham. There were 6 members this
time so it was a pleasant group, walking
and chatting while keeping fit too.

At various points the wall gives support
to some exceptional climbing plants
exhibited in their full maturity. Parts of
the enclosure are given over to an
informal layout exhibiting many more
mature plants, many of them quite
unusual. Its always a wonder that, no
matter how many gardens you visit,
you will invariably discover plants you
have never seen before. This was
another of those occasions. Other areas
of the garden were given over to the
propagation and retail side of the
business.
But by far the most important area of
the garden was the tea and cake caf.
This had only been opened only a
couple of days earlier and we would
have missed it had we not been rained
off two weeks previously. As we
arrived back at the car park for the
journey home, the sun came out.
AGM: We also held our Annual General
Meeting during September. There was a
(reasonably) good attendance and we
were able to discuss various issues of
concern to members.
Lets face it, an AGM can be boring, but
we always try to get the necessities out of
