1.1. SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES :

GENERAL INFORMATIONS
To minimize risk of injury to people working near the winch and to prevent the equipment from
deteriorating, it is important to become familiar with the equipment and SAFE OPERATING
PROCEDURES.
Winches are designed only for lifting goods. Under no circumstance, whether for installation or for
regular or occasional use, may the winches be used to lift / transport people.
Operators may not use the equipment if they are not familiar with the way it works; if they are
not physically or mentally capable of doing so, or if they haven't been informed regarding safe
operating procedures. Improper use of the hoists involves certain risks that can not be prevented
through mechanical means. These risks can, however, be prevented through the intelligent use of the
equipment and by using common sense and being careful.
Safe operating procedures also include a regular inspection and maintenance program. Operator
training must include teaching operators about malfunctions / risks that require adjustments or
repairs and the intervention of a competent and properly trained individual.
Monitoring and management also play an important role in terms of safety, by ensuring that
maintenance is performed on time and that the equipment given to the operator is appropriate for the
type of work to be performed, to prevent the violation of rules applicable to safe operating procedures,
or common-sense operating.

DO and DON'T
(Safe operating procedures for winches)
The following information covers safety procedures for winch use. Always keep in mind that the main
rule is to USE COMMON SENSE. Taking a few minutes to read this information will make equipment
operators aware of what constitutes dangerous practices, and precautions for ones own safety and
that of others. Frequent and regular testing and rigorously following safety rules can save lives, time
and money.

FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY, FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS

AND OF THE EQUIPMENT, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE
PEOPLE USING OR CHECKING / TESTING THE HOIST BE
FAMILIAR WITH THE PRACTICES DESCRIBED IN THIS
MANUAL. THESE INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE GIVEN TO
THEM.

1.2. Dont :
IN GENERAL
The winch is designed for a very specific use : lifting.
Using it for other purposes can be dangerous.

TRANSPORTING/STORING

NEVER leave the equipment standing without the proper support, to prevent damaging the
components on the bottom of the unit (electric wires, lifting wire rope, wedge housing, stuffing box,
etc.)
NEVER lean the machine at an angle greater than 30 when handling it.

INSTALLATION/MAINTENANCE/INTERVENTIONS

DO NOT alter the winch without a prior study and authorization from the manufacturer.
DO NOT change the size of the fuses. Do not attempt repairing the electrical components, or
intervene on the winch without authorization from the manufacturer or a trained maintenance
technician.
NEVER bypass electric cutouts or preventive or limiting equipment.

WHEN USING IT

NEVER transport a load without first having staff leave the area. Do not move the
hook over staff, whether the hook is loaded or not.
DO NOT let an unqualified individual handle the winch
NEVER lift a load greater than the load indicated on the winch, the chains, wire rope, etc. An
overload can be caused by impacts received while the proper weight is being lifted or by the static
state of a load greater than the maximum allowed.
DO NOT block, adjust or disconnect the limit switches while trying to go higher or lower than the
switches will allow.
DO NOT use the winch to rip out, set objects free, pull laterally, etc.
NEVER transport a load while the winch is working.
NEVER leave a hanging load waiting.
NEVER use the wire rope for grounding while welding. Never allow a welding electrode to come in
contact with the lifting cable.
DO NOT use the load limiter as a way to measure the volume being carried.
DO NOT use the commands uselessly. Hoisting motors usually have a high torque and are of a
high-frequency type. Start-up is quite intense and will cause the motor to overheat or even to wear
out if the motor is started up too often.

The operator can and must start up the equipment carefully. Sudden bursts, jolts,
excessive use of the commands (excessive button pushing), excessive direction
changing and sudden stops should be avoided by operator, who should operate the
equipment with care.

1.3. To do :
IN GENERAL

READ and follow the instructions given by the manufacturer regarding installation and
maintenance.
During repairs or maintenance, use only parts and materials recommended by the manufacturer.
READ and follow the directions and preventive information for the winch and give this information
to all operators who will be handling the equipment.

TRANSPORTING/STORING

HANDLE the winch by its main body or its support legs, or by its original wrapping / pallet.
STORE it so that it will be protected from dust and humidity.

INSTALLATION/MAINTENANCE/INTERVENTIONS

HAVE equipment installed by staff that are properly trained and competent for both electrical and
mechanical work.
DEMAND respect of the safety rules (harness, clearing work areas, having staff leave certain work
areas, etc.)
DISCONNECT the sources of electricity.
ESTABLISH an inspection program and record all maintenance performed on winches, and
especially that of hooks, wire ropes, brakes and limit switches.
After replacing a main part, we recommend that you TEST the winch
(As instructed by the law established 9 June 1993)

FOLLOWING A LONG INTERRUPTION OR UPON A ROUTINE INSPECTION :

CHECK that the brakes are working properly.

CHECK that the limit switches are working properly.
CHECK that the hooks, wire ropes are not damaged.
CHECK that wire rope is clean and properly lubricated
CHECK that the wire rope is not out of place, twisted, knotted, worn, or showing any other kind of
defect.
CHECK that the naked ends of the wire to the control panel are not broken. If the wire is too
damaged, it must be replaced.

WHEN USING IT

SET the load in a balanced manner, secure it with the proper accessories (slings, etc.).
MAKE SURE that during use, the load being transported is far enough from machines, materials,
shelves, etc.
PLACE the hook at the vertical top of the load before lifting it. Do not use the winch to pull at an
angle.
MAKE SURE that the load is high enough to avoid any obstacle on the ground during
transportation.
PREVENT the load and the hook from swinging when using the hoist, by keeping the number of
jolts and starts low.
MAKE SURE that the current user is able to control operations at all times by staying near the
equipment.
MAKE SURE that the load is properly hooked onto the hook and that the safety catch is properly
closed. Make sure the load is properly balanced before transporting it. Use adequate accessories
(slings, crosspiece, etc.)
MAKE SURE when lifting begins, that every strand of the wire rope becomes extended normally.
KNOW AND USE the preventive hand signals used while maneuvering the winch.
