CVE 322 Steel Design

Spring Semester, 2014
Homework Assignment #1

For a 6 5/8 unequal leg angle locate the centroid relative to the axes shown below (the U
and V axes in the figure), and then find the maximum and minimum values for the moment of
inertia with respect to the centroidal axes. The centroidal axes are located at the centroid, but
the axes associated with the maximum and minimum moments of inertial are not parallel to the U
and V axes shown below. Find the radius of gyrations associated with the maximum and
minimum values of the moment of inertias, as well as the orientation of the maximum moment of
inertia. Ignore fillets and rounds in your computations.

Find the reactions for the flat roof truss depicted below using vertical loads only. Compute the snow
loads at the truss joints based on projected roof area.

Conduct an analysis of the truss and identify the maximum axial load and which truss member the
load acts on.

Snow + Live Load = 35 psf Estimate rafters & purlins @ 5 psf

Clay tile roof @ 9 psf Estimate truss @ 5 psf
inch plywood sheathing @ 1 psf Bay spacing = 30 ft
Insulation @ 2 psf A992 steel Grade 50 ksi
