If they turn back, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them,

And take not from among them a friend or a helper.

Then seize them and kill them wherever you find them;

And against these we have given you a clear authority.

3 In Graveyard of Bitter Memories

Lacrimosa

In graveyard of bitter memories,

Days so long, nights longer, numbing cold

In darkness of eternal dark

You shall forever rest.

Who is that carrying that mass of broken flesh?

Dripping blood from gory holes

Grazed and filthy in humiliates

Our clean white flesh and chokes us

Eyes nearly closed, staring,

Fixed, gaze mournfully,

33

Sleep then, you who are weary

And your pain will ease away

Mighty ally,

What questions must be asked?

What words uttered

Before you can see?

How much more blood do you want?

How many more corpse of the brave?

How many more pictures like this must you see?

Before you come to your sense?

4 They Desire That You Should Disbelieve

They desire that you should disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that
you might be all alike;

Therefore take not from among them friends until they fly their homes in
god's way;

But if they turn back, then seize them and kill them wherever you find
them, and take not from among them a friend or a helper.

Except those who reach a people between whom and you there is an
alliance,

Or who come to you, their hearts shrinking from fighting you or fighting
their own people;
36

And if god had pleased, He would have given them power over you,

So that they should have certainly fought you;

Therefore if they withdraw from you and do not fight you and offer you
peace, then god has not given you a way against them.

5 We prescribe to the children of Israel

We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul,

Unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though

he slew all men;

And whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men;

And certainly our messengers came to them with clear arguments,

But even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.

We prescribed to them in it that life is for life, and eye for eye, and nose
for nose, and ear for ear, and tooth for tooth, and that there is reprisal in
wounds;

But he who foregoes it, it shall be an expiation for him;

And whoever did not judge by what god revealed, those are they that are
the unjust.

6 It may be that god will grant love and friendship between you and those whom
you hold as enemies.

It may be that god will grant love and friendship between you and those
whom you hold as enemies.

And God is Powerful; and God is Forgiving, Merciful.

God forbids you not,

With regard to those who fight you not for your religion nor drive you out
of your homes,

That you should show them kindness and deal justly with them.

Surely god loves the doers of justice.

7 Nor can goodness and evil be equal.

Nor can goodness and evil be equal.

Repel evil with what is better:

Then will he between whom and thee was hatred become as it were thy
friend and intimate!
42

And no one will be granted such goodness except those who are
patience and self-restraint,

none but persons of the greatest good fortune.

And if whispers from the devil reach thee then seek refuge in god.

Lo! He is the Hearer, the Knower.

Peace be upon you.
