What do you desire of the Lord?

Main Text: 1 KINGS 3: 1-15

Emphasis on 5&9
Introduction: We know about the story of Solomon, son of David and
Bathsheba.
1. Love for the Lord by - verse 3&4
i. Walking according to the instructions giving him by his father.
What instructions do you give to your children, will it benefit
them, what examples do you set before them?
Teach a youth about the way he should go; even
when he is old he will not depart from it.- Pro 22:6
ii. Solomon offered sacrifices to the Lord.

2. The Lord appeared before Solomon verse 5-9

i. Solomon acknowledged the mercies of God vs 5&6
Solomon acknowledge his weakness and mercies of God. He
acknowledges that him being a king is by the mercy of God.
How often to stop to take account of your life and thank God for
the mercies he has shown.
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his
mercy endureth for ever. Psalm 136
ii. But I am a little child vs 7&8
Though Solomon was a king and was not a child, he came before
the Lord with humility especially when realized the
responsibilities entrusted to him to lead the people of God.
Many at times, when we are entrusted with leadership of the
church or the people of God, we forget God, whose favored us.
Sometimes we pretend to be humble and serviceable until we
become leaders, deacons, deaconess. Solomon did not forget
who God is, or who made him a king over Israel. He realized he
can only rely on God.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not
unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways
acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6
iii. Solomon ask for a discerning heart vs 9
Solomon asked for more than great knowledge; he wanted
understanding, and he wanted it in his heart, not merely in his
head. What would have asked of the Lord, money, riches, land,
health and long life, lands, that your enemies die, or would have
asked the Lord that you may know him and the power of his
resurrection. Solomon asked for a discerning heart, a hearing
heart, and obedient heart that will distinguish good from evil,
right from wrong, injustice from just. What do you desire of the
Lord?, to serve him and his people well, to walk with him in
faithfulness?
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be
enlightened in order that you may know the hope to
which he has called you, the riches of his glorious
inheritance in his holy people. Ephesians 1:18
iv. The Lord gave Solomon more than he asked for vs 10.
Solomon was more concern about the people of Israel than he
was for himself. Do you show more concern for the people God
has brought in your life, the husband you prayed for, the
children God has giving you, the wife, the servant of God, the
members you have been entrusted with?
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly
abundantly above all that we ask or think, according
to the power that works in us. Ephesians 3:20
