Model and NC code Generation for simple profile using
Milling operation
Aim:
To model and generate a NC Code for a simple profile using milling operation
in Master cam.

Software used:
Mastercam-X6

Pre Lab Questions:

1. What is the use of sketcher in Master cam
Sketcher is the suite of Master cam functions that create basic geometry
dynamically, that is, by moving your mouse and clicking in the graphics
window. Basic geometry includes points, lines, arcs, spines, fillets, chamfers,
and primitives.
2. Write the Short cut key to bring operation manager in Master cam
Alt+ O
3. What are the cutting methods to choose a roughing pattern for the tool
path?
Constant overlap spiral, Zigzag, true spiral, parallel spiral, morph spiral.
4. Write the Short cut key to show/hide coordinate axes in Master cam
F9

[Type text]
Procedure:

i) Open the software Master cam X6.

ii) Icon bars and Menu bars appear on the Screen.
iii) To select Metric or Inches go to settings configuration select Metric or
Inches.
iv) To represent the cross-hairline Press F9.
v) To represent the Axis Press Alt+F9 (X and Y as default)
vi) To create Milling Profile, we can select corner reference or middle reference.
vii) Better to take middle reference and draw the sketch as per the co-ordinate
values.
viii) To draw the rectangle Select rectangle option click at anchor to center
and enter the length and breadth of the rectangle of 117 and 40.
ix) To draw the circles take 0,-42 and 0, 42 as center points, draw two circles each
side with radius of 5 and 12.5.
x) Complete the profile with suitable co-ordinate values.
xi) Press Alt+ O to get the operation manager window.
xii) Go to Menu bar select machine type select Mill default.
xiii) We can see machine group-1 in the operation manager window and under this
properties and tool path group -1 will appear.
xiv) Go to properties Files select the controller which we want select the
output machine name to NC.
xv) Go to tool settings enter program name select feed calculation from
material click at boxes like assign tool numbers, warn of duplicate tool
numbers, adjust feed on arc move, clearance height, retraction height, feed
plane, select starting and incremental sequence number.
xvi) Select material from the Library.
xvii) Go to stock setup Reference point select all entities will get exact X and
Y value and enter the Z value only select ok.(X,Y,Z and stock for facing
etc.,)
xviii) Go to Menu bar Tool paths select the operations select the tools in
sequence.
Operations selected Tools selected

Face 50mm Face mill cutter

Contour 10mm Flat end mill cutter

xix) Face: Select the outer most boundary of the profile cutting method (one-
way or zigzag), Top of stock, depth of cut to be entered.
xx) Contour mill: Select the second boundary Multipass option, cutter
compensation, top of stock, Depth of cut to be entered..
xxi) Finally go to operation manager window select all operations regenerate
all operations Verify the operations.
xxii) After simulation is over select G1 in the operation manager window
generate the NC codes Save in any one of the drive.
xxiii) Write down the codes generated.
xxiv) The generated NC Program consists of Program number, material selected,
operations selected, Tools selected, various interpolations used, syntax used
for different operations etc.
Post Lab Questions:
1. What does minimize tool burial do?
The minimize tool burial is provides tool path optimization that helps avoid
tool damage when cutting around pocket islands with particularly small tools.
This option applies only to Zigzag pocket tool paths and helps to avoid
burying a tool in too much stock around islands.
2. Write the Short cut key to grid options in Master cam?
Alt+ G
3. What is plunge rate parameter?
The plunge rate parameter controls the speed of the plunge movement of the
cutter. The plunge rate applies to tool movements in the negative Z direction
only.
4. Write the Short cut key to shading on/off in Master cam?
Alt+ S

Result:
Thus, the model and NC Code is generated for a simple profile using Master
cam milling operation.
