What is

Scaffold consist of a plank made of wood or

metal, uses tubular in order to stand on its own
and use as a platform by workers during construction, cleaning
purposes or maintaining a building..

As a Safety Professional, it is vital to know the main

cause/s why scaffold collapse to prevent accidents.

We need to create a scaffold inspection

checklist to ensure we will not forget anything
during inspection and assessment.

1
We need to inspect every details of
the scaffold to ensure we connected it
properly and it is safe to use. Also we
need to assess the possible hazards of
the structure and put all necessary
controls to prevent accidents.

Sample:
A. Overloading
B. Excessive Height
C. Inadequate Access

2
Overloading

Erroneous load capacity on

scaffold tag is the main reason
of overloading and cause of
collapse. It is common
nowadays that scaffold tag have
higher load capacity value than
its actual threshold.
Based on the the survey
conducted in social media, out of the thousands safety officers here in the
Philippines only 20% know how to calculate the capacity of the structure
accurately.
With this scenario, it will be an immense chance that the safety will not
see the overloading hazard, which are the causes of frequent accidents

Sample Scenario
If you have a 9 meters height of scaffold, with 3 platforms
and length of 4 meter and 2 meter in width.
How will you determine the load capacity of the scaffold is
tally with the scaffold tag?

3
How to calculate scaffold capacity

Step1: Determine the duty rating of the scaffold

A. Light duty
B. Medium duty
C. Heavy duty

Step2: Get the base dimension.

2X4 base dimension

Step 3: Multiply the area of the scaffold with duty rating.

8X480kg=3840kg

Step 4: Divide total scaffold capacity by 4 to get the 4x intended load.

3840kg/4=960kg
960- Is your first platform capacity

4
For the second platform, Deduct 20% (called dead load) of the first
platform load capacity.
960- 20%=768kg 2nd Platform

For the third and final platform, deduct 20% of the second platform.
768kg-20%=614.4kg- 3rd platform

The capacity with the highest platform is called Safe Work Load (SWL)
Capacity

Excessive Height

Having a high platform but narrow

base dimension of a scaffold is one
of the hazards being checked by
safety officer in order for him to
analyze if it safe to use. By doing
this we can prevent the collapse of
the structure.
We can use tie off or connecting the scaffold to a wall/building using hook or out
rigger in order to widen the base dimension and make the structure much balance.

Sample:
If the height of the scaffold structure is 9 meters, 2 meter width and 4 meters in
length. What is the minimum base requirement of your structure?

5
Step1: Get the 4:1 ratio of the
9m/4=2.25m- base requirement.

Step2: Subtract base requirement with given base width

2.25m 2m = 0.25m out rigger.

If your structure really needed to have an outrigger both sides, divide your
outrigger by 2.
0.25/2= 0.125
