Parents, teachers and health care professionals often deny prevalence of adolescent depression.

Adolescent depression greatly depends on psychological factors. For instance, child-parent relationship
changes with the passage of time, i.e. from protection-dependency to care, equality and respect. This
leads to shape personal identity and values thus culminating to autonomy and independence. Usually
parents are reluctant to embrace this change that ultimately disregards adolescent child, hence a
momentous break between children and parents occur.

Psychological changes witnessed during the puberty are mainly caused by growth in genitals and gonads
in addition to secondary sexual characteristics cause by changes in hormones. For example, nocturnal
emission in boys and menstruation in girls disturb their routine lives, in fact, this may cause fear and
loneliness feeling. It is pertinent to mention that such changes have significant impact on females than
on males. This infers that females are more likely to re-adjust this phase of life and due to dramatic
challenges they weather from time to time. Researchers have different views pertaining the specific
causes that make girls more inclined to depression. Female hormonal changes are considered the
fundamental cause of the problem.
