ABSTRACT

Introduction
For millions of people on a daily basis, motor impairments diminish quality of life, reduce independence,
and increase healthcare costs. Assistive mobile robots that autonomously manipulate objects within
everyday settings have the potential to improve the lives of the elderly, injured, and disabled by
augmenting their abilities with those of a cooperative robot.

Problem statement:
This project is based several IEEE papers published during the past 2 years. Due to ageing population and
scattered families old age people and handicapped people are living without their children lonely at home.
Also due to costly servants and non availability 24 X 7. The need for a robot to assist them in their daily
life is felt across the globe. This is the reason almost all top universities have established research on
service robots to enhance the living conditions of aged people. This problem is more severe in western
countries due to better medical facilities people live longer but unable to perform daily activities without
support from their children..
Proposed solution:
Within this paper we present the simplified version of EL-E (pronounced Ellie), an assistive mobile
manipulator that we are actively developing to help people with motor impairments in everyday tasks
People with motor impairments have consistently placed a high priority on retrieving objects from the
floor and shelves (Stanger et al, 1994), so a robot capable of performing pick and place operations within
human environments would be valuable. Moreover, it could serve as a foundation upon which other forms
of assistance could be built.

Assistive mobile robots that semi autonomously manipulate objects within everyday settings have the
potential to improve the lives of the elderly, injured, and disabled. Within this paper, we present the an
assistive mobile manipulator EL-E Research platform of Georgia tech university USA. the focus is
on the subsystem that enables the robot to retrieve objects from and deliver objects to flat surfaces. Once
provided with voice recognition capability the robot is guided to the location and then either grasps the
nearest object or places an object. We describe our implementation in detail, while highlighting design
principles and themes, including the use of specialized behaviors, task-relevant features, and low-
dimensional representations.
Power supply: This project uses either mains derived supply or battery depending on the requirements.
