DCLM VII.1. Legend/ Origin of the 1.1 ALLEN
Place Allen was first settled by Learners in this place take Express appreciation and
Capulenos long before the last pride and ownership of the respect to the place and
quarter of the 17th century. The legend people
first couple who organized
Allen a sitio of the principality Promote culture and heritage
of Capul in 1975 were Juan
Cabacang and Cosmania
Cajandab together with few
Capuleno families. They called
the sitio Manipa-a meaning the
place nipa palm. However,
settlers associated the name to
a thigh-knee-deep Sabang
river which they usually wade
across.
At the beginning of the 18th
century, migration influx to
Samar increased from Capul
island and the Bicol region. The
first couple to reach Manipa-a
from Bulusan, Sorsogon were
Lorenzo Gallego and Maria
Cabahug with some of their
relatives.
As the sitio flourished the
inhabitants petitioned for
township in 1867 which the
mother municipality of Capul
granted through the
permission of Spanish Politico
Militar Governor of Samar.The
name of Manip-a was changed
to La Granja, meaning the
home of beautiful dalagas but
was most closely associated to
mean the place of persecuted
families. (During the
revolutionary Period) La
Granja, was predominantly
people by capulenos and
Bicolenos. Famous family
pioneers from Capul were: The
Cabacangs, Cajandabs,
Floreses,
Salgados,Magdaraogs, Suans
and many others: while the
pioneering Bicolenos weret the
Gallegos, Cabahugs,
Formarans, Vacunawans,
Eulins, Puasos, Manooks,
Ricartes, Gubats, Gabiosas,
Galarosas and other.
In 1898 Don Lorenzo
Gallego, the third executive of
La Granja donated to the
parish church the patron saint,
Sr. Santiago de Apostle from
Bulusan. Believed to be carved
during the 16th and 17th from
Spain.
In 1903, the name La
Granja was changed to Allen in
honor of Gen. Robert Allen, the
military Governor of the
Visayas, who liberated the
Visayan Island from the
Spaniards.
Allen as a sitio in 1775
became one of the most
progressive municipality in the
province of Northern Samar in
the span of 193 years. Allen for
its record was administered by
51 town executive and was
ministered by Roman Catholic
parish priests and assistant
priests. Allen now becomes the
commercial
And for almost two
centuries, Allen now becomes
the commercial center of the
entire Balicuatro area.
Although Allen was reduced
twice in land area and
population, due to the
conversion of its two big
barangays (San Isidro in 1954
and Victoria in 1971) the town
has steadily progressed and
played its rule as the
commercial center in the
region.
1.2 CATARMAN
The historical development Respect the culture and Take good care of the records
of Catarman, started from its heritage of a place of generations
conception as a tribe before the
coming of the Spaniards until
to date where it looms to recent
technologies and even more
progressive than anyone could
have ever expected.
Catarman derived its name
from Turkish word atar which
means oil of the roses and
inman or aman
synonymous for muslim holy
men. It was one of the
thirteenth pueblos established
by the Spaniard in the province
Ibabao (Samar), and was of the
settlements on the northern
side of the island. The pueblo
was named Calatman and
was recorded as one among the
pueblos in the Islas de
Pentados referred to as the
Island of Samar and Leyte.
Catarman was once part of
the Provincia de Ibabao which
extended from what is now
Allen down to the municipality
of Guluan, Eastern Samar. The
first missionaries belong to the
Society of Jesus, brought the
Gospel to the people of
Catarman in 1649, and then to
the rest of the established
settlements. For a long time,
Catarman had no resident
priest. It was under the care of
the mission center of Palapag
which then covered the area
from Biri to Borongan. When
she became a visita of Bobon,
Fr. Raymundus Claramont,
based in Bobon, ministered to
Catarman, particularly in
1697.
The tragic location of the
Catarman and its
comparatively better socio-
economic activities played an
important role in the direction
it is taking now. When the
provice of Smar divided into
three provinces by virtue of
R.A. No. 4221, dated June 19,
1965. Catarman was chosen as
seat of the provincial capital.
When the province of Northern
Samar was established as a
separate diocese from Samar
and Eastern Samar, again it
was chosen as the seat of the
diocese.
The yearly August 28-29
fiesta of Our Lady of the
Annunciation of Catarman is
the ultimate of mini-fiestas-
celebrated in honor of religious
figure protector beginning with
the Three Kings after an all-
night Years Thanksgiving down
to the Sto. Nino, Holy Week,
Perpetual Help, the
Assumption, and all the other
minor saints celebration. Fiesta
celebrated in the belief fostered
by the Roman Catholic that
each town has to have a saint
protector and acts as bridge
between God and Man,
intercedes for the towns
interest and generally acts as
would be a diplomat act to
secure the municipal or barrio
interest. The fiesta celebration
is celebrated with dance.At the
dance hall the vivacity of the
curacha performed with verve
and vitality, takes a new
significance as one recognize
the steps of the rigodon de
honor in its opening steps, the
pandango, pantomina, lubi-
lubi, tinikling and the coy
oriental fan dance. Curacha
honors the prominent
personalities present at the
fiesta dance hall.
1.3 GAMAY
How the town came to called Promote local stories Learn to appreciate different
as Gamay is told in legends and places and languages
stories. One prevalent story
believed by most of the
townsfolks related to an alleged
conversation that took place
between a Spaniard and a lady
abaca-loom weaver. The
visiting Spanish man was
reportedly asking the weaver,
by what name the place is
called?
Without understanding the
Spanish language, the weaver
responded surprisingly in local
dialect, she said gamay as her
answer to the question with the
thought that she has been
asked what she was doing.
Gamay is a native word that
refers to the finest abaca
strands distinguished from
urubayon (medium) and
kadagkuan (thicker abaca
strands.
As the time went by,
Binongtuan became a
flourishing Christian
settlement and a growing
community. Their religious
belief adopted from
Christianity strengthened their
faith in God which made them
the courage to resist against
the Muslim marauders
(popularly identified as Moros).
Yet, the frequent Moro raids to
the place called Binayaan (a
place where the first settlement
dwelt) forced the inhabitants to
finally abandon the place to
avoid and escape from the
abduction and slavery by the
Moro bonds. They settled near
the mouth of the river- a
strategic location to defend
themselves against the Moros.

about a buried stone that especially in MAPEH and ESP.
became a tree.
In a certain unknown sitio of
the barrio an old man buried a
stone three feet deep on the
ground and which he failed to
visit for two weeks. There were
no people residing in the place
so that he alone know the
buried stone was.
After two weeks, he visited
the stone and to his surprise in
its place was a tree with long
and slender branches. The tree
produced itself and from it, the
people believe all the trees

Historically Mapanas was Feeling of responsibility and Draw some beautiful places

As to how the place named
Mapanas the old folks relate
that the place was noted of
beautiful multicolored birds
which in time became instinct
because of the existence of the
poisonous snakes that killed
them. The presence of the
snakes prints was locally called
as panas so whenever
someone saw snakes prints
they immediately shouted out
may panas which means
there are snakes prints. Then
as years go by may panas
became MAPANAS as its official
name.
Because of the desire to
become an independent
municipality the residents thru
the 11 key men with the help of
some local officials made a
resolution requesting Mapanas
to became municipality and
this was finally approved by
former President Ferdinand E.
Marcos last June 18, 1966
under R.A 4762.
1.10 ROSARIO
In the early 1580s a group Feeling of pride of culture and Appreciate the beauty of
of Bicolanos from the Province locality nature
of Sorsorgon was seeking for a
new home. Most of these
people fled from their beloved
birth places for fear of the so
called Quentos requirement,
citizens were obliged to join the
Spanish Army and to serve as
laborers in the ship-building
industry and construction of
the Spanish fortresses. In order
to lose their identities,they
changed their identities by way
of omitting or adding a letter to
their surnames or adopting
new ones.
This group of emigrants
first settled on a peninsular
point of the present town. They
called this place Visita (to
visit but later they moved to the
present site, used to be
abounding with Mamban, a
plant whose rattan- like stem is
used for sewing nipa thatches).
Mambans therefore, become
the name of the settlement. As
time went by, the place become
thickly populated by additional
emigrants and was finally
turned into a barrio under the
Municipality of Bobon,
Northern Samar.
The dominant numbers of
inhabitants were farmers and
fishermen. The farmers
cultivated the fertile soil
around the nearby lowlands for
rice production while the
fishermen went about fishing
and catching kinis that
abound in the vast mangrove.
There was great abundance of
food, thus, the community was
relatively progressive.
In one occasion, a certain
Francisca de Vera went on a
vacation to her hometown in
Gubat, Sorsogon. In her return,
she brought an image of the
Holy Rosary (Nuestra Senora
del Rosario). Being the first
image brought to the
settlement and thirsty for
religious festivities, the
inhabitants told the owner that
they were very much willing to
build a chapel for the image to
have it for public worship. Mrs.
De Vera being a generous and
considerate woman offered it
readily to the people. In that
same year, the barrio was
named Rosario in honor of the
image of the Holy Rosary and
celebrated its first grand fiesta
on the 8th of October.
