The Course Description:


This course is designed to facilitate the students to have a more thorough and comprehensive
knowledge in the area of language assessment and skills in developing instruments of language
assessment. More particularly, it is deliberated to help the students: (1) make a distinction among
evaluation, assessment and testing, (2) comprehend the principles of assessment in the context of
English teaching, (3) design classroom assessments, (4) develop instruments for assessing
listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and the components of language (pronunciation,
grammar and vocabulary). In an attempt of attaining the objectives, the students are motivated to:
(1) search and read references on the assigned topic, (2) learn to select and use the relevant
references for assessment project, and (3) prepare their assessment project for classroom
discussion. The contents cover: (1) The concept of evaluation, assessment and testing, (2)
principles of assessment in the context of English teaching, (3) the design of classroom English
tests and assessments, the instruments for assessing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills,
language components.

The Course Objectives:


By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
1. make a distinction among evaluation, assessment and testing,
2. comprehend the principles of assessment in the context of English teaching,
3. design classroom English assessments,
4. develop instruments for assessing English skills and components,
5. comprehend the use of classroom assessment

Learning Activities:
1. Reading and reviewing the relevant course materials,
2. Being present and actively participating in class,
3. Doing some tasks (reviewing relevant sources for preparing academic paper on EL
assessment),
4. Taking a midterm test,
5. Taking a final test,
6. Writing an academic paper on EL assessment.
