Last Push to Bring New Seating
to the Hill
W

excitement
about critical
improvements
being made on
the Britt hill.
With the close of
another fantastic
season, Britt is
transitioning into what is sure to be
a busy off season. Beginning this
month, our old grey Britt bench seats will
become just a memory. Thanks to Jackson
County Parks, the 30-year-old decrepit
wood benches and
steel brackets are
in the process of
being removed.
The site work will
continue into the fall
to prepare for the
spring installation
of our beautiful new
hardwood benches.
The project will also include a new light
tower, safer walkways, new lighting
and a back-up generator system for
emergency evacuation. Our work should
be completed just in time for Jacksonville
Elementary Schools annual play.
The fundraising effort began in 2016
and to date we have secured $935,000 of
our 1.2 million dollar goal. We have just
received a $300,000 grant from the M.J.
Murdock Charitable Trust. The grant
initially provides $100,000 in outright
funds, with a $200,000 challenge grant
contingent upon a 1:1 match. To receive
the matching funds, Britt is offering a
bench sponsorship program that invites
Harmonizers Support Music in Schools
Imagine that you are a new music
teacher reporting for work and then
receive the following assignment: Your
class load is 160 split into five choirs
groups that are expected to perform
four to eight public performanceson
schedule! Twenty of the students have
had private lessons and are ready to
perform with some coaching. However,
because funding cuts have eliminated
elementary school music, sixty students
do not yet match pitch. The school
budget will not cover sheet music, music
folders and an accompanist for the
classes. You are expected to pay for those
out of your pocket. (Is it any wonder that
half of those who enter this profession
leave it within the first seven years?)
Study after study shows that, in their
later school years, students who received
at least school chorus music instruction
get better grades in subjects like math
patrons and businesses of the community
to sponsor one or more seats with
inscribed plaques that will be attached
to the seat backrests for a full decade.
Sponsorships are available from $250 to
$1,500. A dollar for dollar match is the
ideal way to leverage your support
your $250 gift will become $500! If you

As a group of local retirees, the goal of
the Rogue Valley Harmonizers (RVH)
is to help public school music teachers.
Our group provides a-cappella training,
techniques, coaching, a music library,
technology and daytime availability. We
have public support and membership
and seek more of both. Our major fall
show, Songs of Broadway, features
Vocal Spectrum, an a-cappella quartet
widely thought to be the best in the
world, with three international gold
medals. Proceeds from the show will help
support our public school work. For more

What? Biopics again?
O
kay, well admit it. We havent
reviewed much cinema this year.
Frankly, we werent inspired by
Hollywoods offerings in 2017. Yes, we
liked Wonder Woman (a lot) but many of
the other films left ushmmwe believe a peace treaty between England and
the correct word in the current parlance
would be meh. Look it up.
Until recently, even the trailers for
upcoming movies failed to move us.
But something strange happened last
week. We saw trailers for three films that
looked as though they might be good. In
fact, they looked sensational.
Disclosure: theyre all biographical.
As you may have noticed, were suckers
for a good biopic,
and all of these
were inspired by
Important Historical
Events. But before
you say History?
Meh! and move on
to a different page,
let us remind you
that those who dont
care to remember the

comedians in the country, performed
to a sold-out audience.
He was both raunchy
and hilarious. For me,
though, the raunch got
old. However, at one

was asked the other day while
working (volunteering) on the front
porch of the Jacksonville Community
Center (JCC)/Cedars on 4th, if as
President of the community center, do I
feel pressure trying to get the building
actually built and completed?
I thought for a moment and then kind
of laughed to myself, Pressure, what
pressure?
For 17+ years, with all of the people
and organizations trying to make this
happen year after year, now that was
pressure. I was just fortunate enough to
be in the right place at the right time. You
have heard the adage, Even a broken
clock is correct twice a day. I find myself
lucky to be working with such great
people in a great town.
I work with people who are patient
with me, as I learn the ropes and role of
being President of an organization. I am
having the chance to be part of our Board

Point, Sams Valley and Gold Hill. During
his teaching years, Mike taught social
studies, English, speech, journalism and
drama, coached basketball, cross country
and track, directed school plays, served
as President of the Oregon Language Arts
Association, co-founded a civic theater
group and became an avid runner,
completing numerous ten kilometer
races, as well as two marathons. As a
school administrator, he served on the
Jackson County Commission on Children
and Families, was chosen in 1992 by the
Oregon Association of Industries for the
Outstanding Secondary Principals award

for five years as an adjunct professor for
Portland State University.
Mike and his wife, Kandee, have been
married for 36 years and together have
four children and eight grandchildren.
A 34-year member of the Central Point
Rotary Club, he remains active in that
organization, as well as the Crater
Foundation, of which he is a co-founder.
Six years ago, the McClains made the
move from Central Point to Jacksonville
and immediately immersed themselves
into the life of Jacksonville. He is the
past president of the Jacksonville
Boosters Club, is a Board member of
the Jacksonville Boosters Foundation
and enjoys participating in numerous
hands on Boosters projects. He and
Steve Casaleggio recently completed
re-finishing the California Street benches,
a two-year project. He serves on the
Jacksonville Budget Committee and is
an active member of the Jacksonville
Presbyterian Church where he has
served as a church elder and for the past
two years has been the team captain for
the church-sponsored Mexico Mission
Yard Sale. He is an avid reader, a 20-
year journalist and enjoys travel and
the Jacksonville trail system of the
Jacksonville Woodlands and Forest Park.
In October of 2016, he was chosen to
become a board member of the Rogue
Valley Manor Foundation Board and has
now promised Kandee that he will not
take on any more volunteer work!

Wong Goons Haunted Laundry

ctober marks four years since we
excavated the burned dwelling
along Main Street in Jacksonvilles
Chinese Quarter. October also marks my
favorite holiday, and in honor of both, I
am going to tell you a ghost story.
Our story is set in the late nineteenth
century and features a young man named
Wong Goon. Wong was an immigrant
from southern China and a prominent
resident of early Jacksonville. Wong
owned and operated a laundry, which
not only provided an important service
to the city, and economic opportunity
for his family, it also functioned as an
important community hub. Wong served
as a labor broker for mining and railroad
interests and was well known both
within the Chinese Quarter and in the
wider Jacksonville community. The local
newspaper celebrated the arrival of his
son in 1885 and wrote with regret about
his death of consumption in 1887.
Less than one year after his death, a
catastrophic fire broke out and burned
the northern part of the Chinese
Quarter to the ground. This fire not
only destroyed the house excavated
by the Southern Oregon University
Laboratory of Anthropology in 2013, but
it also burned Wongs former laundry.
Properties damaged by the fire were
listed in an article in the Democratic Times,
including the wash-house formerly
occupied by Wong Goon, and haunted by
his spirit since his death.
While a haunted laundry certainly
grabs our attention today (especially
in the season of pumpkin patches and
haunted houses), ghosts in traditional
Chinese culture are quite different from
the spooks and ghouls of Halloween.
Ghosts are a common part of everyday
life and can be both good and evil.
Festivals and rituals often include
firecrackers, torches, bonfires, and
other elements meant to scare away the
spirits, and cities and roadways are also
constructed with ghosts in mind. As
ghosts are believed to travel in a straight
line, curves, short walls, and other
architectural elements are added to keep
unwanted spirits away.
If an individual suffered a bad death,
an improper burial, or if there are no
descendants to perform the necessary
rituals, the spirit can become unhappy.
Families often burn incense, paper
money, or other offerings to satisfy the
spirits and bring the surviving family
luck. It is unclear why Wongs spirit
was restless, nor do we know what
happened to his family after his death.
As to the haunted laundry, perhaps the
remaining Chinese Quarter residents
thought it wise to heed the ancient
words of Confucius: Respect ghosts
and gods, but keep away from them.

 Pioneer Profiles: Colonel John England Ross
Indian Fighter Part 3

In the mid-1800s, the promise of gold and free land lured fortune seekers and settlers to the
newly-formed Oregon Territory. They were soon followed by merchants who amassed their
own wealth selling supplies to the miners and farmers. This ongoing series shares the stories of
these pioneers and their times.
T
he previous two installments of
Pioneer Profiles recounted Col.
John England Ross exploits as
Indian fighter, treasure seeker, and
entrepreneur. We left him in the Klamath
basin escorting wagon trains across the
Cascades, providing protection from
ambush and murder by the Modoc
Indians. But by October of 1852, he
and his men were no longer needed

marriedthe second
wedding in Jackson
County and the first
in Jacksonville. Naturally, all the town
folk were invited. Elizabeth had a special
wedding dress made for the ceremony,
but Ross had nothing but his buckskins.
The ladies of Jacksonville fretted over
this lack of proper wedding attire.
Jane McCully offered Ross a white
shirt that belonged to her husband. Dr.
McCullys smaller stature meant the fit
was strained at best. When the nervous
bridegroom joined a jumping contest
with some of the men attending the
ceremony, Ross exuberance split the
shirt down the back. The ever-resourceful initially victors of the daily skirmishes.
Jane quickly poked holes down each side
of the split, laced it together with string,
and the wedding proceeded as planned.
With no church and no place large
enough to accommodate everyone,
Ross and Elizabeth were married on
the corner of Main and Oregon next
to the town pump, even though it was
early January. The Methodist preacher,
Reverend Gilbert, presided. The groom
was 35; the bride, 18.
The occasion was obvious cause for a
jubilee. A progressive supper went house becoming easy prey. The survivors who

After his marriage, Ross settled
down to being a farmer. He filed a
donation land claim a few miles north
of Jacksonville, and in October, after
the birth of their first child, he began
building a cabin at the corner of Ross
Lane and Hanley Road. The new family
moved into it in December. But this
bucolic existence was short-lived.
What had at best been an uneasy
peace between the settlers
and the Rogue Indians fell
apart. After a small band
of Indians murdered
a group of miners,
a mob lynched a
9-year-old Indian
boy who had the
misfortune of being
in town. Both sides
became convinced
that complete
elimination of the
other was the only
solution.
Ross was called
back to military duty.
Over 200 men enrolled in
the volunteer fighting force.
General Joseph Lane led one battalion;
Ross another. The troops proceeded
to the wooded headwaters of Evans
Creek where the Indians were primed
and ready. After several hours of heavy
gunfire and violent fighting, the Indian
respected, was the
leader of their enemy.
They requested a
ceasefire and parley.
The Indians, sick of
war, were ready for
a truce. A peace talk
was scheduled for
September 10, 1853,
below Table Rock. The
Indians demanded that
Ross be the interpreter
because they knew he
was fair. They trusted
him. Out-numbered
and out-armed, the
Indians accepted
confinement on a
reservation along the
Table Rocks.
Although the
settlers rejoiced in
the truce, it existed
primarily on paper.
Advocates of the Extermination
Policy continued unprovoked attacks,
burning Indian villages and murdering
women and children. The oppressed
Indians struck back, murdering
indiscriminately in return.
Ross was at home working his farm
and awaiting the birth of the couples
second child when he was recalled
to duty in 1855. This time he was
commander of a 20 company volunteer
army reinforced by regular Army troops.

many are breathing a sigh of relief.

But if youre a parent who plans to help
pay for your childs college education
one day, now is the time for action.
Because, well... do

are 3 of the biggest
mistakes parents
make as they save
for their kids
education:
1) Parents dont
start soon enoughThe earlier you start
saving, the better. But remember, its
their collegenot yours. You still have
retirement to keep in mind. So a more
realistic goal is to save up one-third of the
expected college cost. For an estimated
low end and high end of your savings
goals, refer to the chart below found at

2) Parents dont save at allThere are
a lot of families who havent saved at
all. With all the other costs of raising a
child, its completely understandable. So
if you havent started, youre not alone.
In fact, according to the College Savings
Foundation, just over half are actually
putting money away for their childs
education. Less than half have more than
$5,000 saved.3
However, the downside of not saving
enough is, you or your child may have to
borrow money which could delay your
retirement and/or saddle your child with
a lot of debt after graduation.
3) Theyre saving in other accounts
Some parents say they dont need a
529 plan because theyre saving in
a brokerage account. But one huge
difference between a brokerage account
and a 529 istaxes. With a 529 the money
grows tax free and comes out tax free.
Unlike a traditional brokerage account,
youll pay no taxes on any dividends or
interest you earn.4 Also, when you start
making withdrawals you pay no tax on
the capital gains as long as the money
is being used for qualifying educational
expenses. And in some states, youll get
an additional tax break on your income

 A Few Minutes with the Mayor

recently had occasion to remember
a political figure I listened to every
week on the radio. His name was
Senator Claghorn and he was a true
Southern spokesman. One week, when
objecting to the import and sale of apples
from the North, and being told thats
where apples grow, his solution was to
move the Mason-Dixon Line to Canada
and then the apples would be OK.
Senator Claghorn was fictional the
brainchild of one of the most brilliant
radio comedians in the golden days
of radio, Fred Allen. In many ways
Allen was the comic version of another
brilliant entertainer and sage of the
early 20th Century, Will Rogers. Each
was able to cut through the pomposity
and sometimes duplicity of the political
figures of the day. On the subject of
Congress, Rogers said, I dont make jokes.
I just watch the government and report the
facts. Rogers also took aim at the media
when he said, All I know is just what I
read in the papers, and thats an alibi for my
ignorance. One can only imagine what
these humorists would have to say in
todays political climate.
We need humor like this today with
a political environment growing so
fierce that our government is in a de-
facto civil war with itself. Washington
D.C. has become a battleground for
all the self-righteous, pompous, and
self-serving political leaders in our
nation. It seems the entire Congress is
becoming Senator Claghorn clones.
Lets concede that Republicans and
Democrats in Congress dont like
each other. Can they move on and
stop demonstrating their contempt for
each other and for us and stop their
empty rhetoric? Evidently not! Most
of them have degrees for some college
or university where they must have
attended an Empty Rhetoric 101
class. The rules in that class are never
talk to the average citizen but talk to
your base because that will keep you
in office, and always demonize the
opposition and keep the average citizen
ignorant of the facts.

Humor Needed
There are 100 senators in Congress.
Most are lawyers. Many are far wealthier
than we the people. Theyre so used
to clipping our wallets wed be better off
if we chose 100 barbers to replace all of
them. At least when they give us a trim
they stop before its too late.
Back in the 19th Century, American
humorist Mark Twain addressed this
problem when he said, Politicians and
diapers must be changed often, and for
the same reason. That sounds good,
but year after year, we keep voting the
same faces back in. We do this even
though we give Congress an incredibly
low approval rating of 16%. If people
felt that way about their automobiles,
theyd be changing cars faster than a
jackrabbit can run.
The Senate in ancient Rome was
not an elected body. Members
were appointed by the consuls.
Those appointed were often Roman
magistrates who had finished serving
their term in office. The appointment
was for life, though a senator could be
removed for misconduct. If we are going
to continue to vote the same people
in year after year, we are operating in
the same manner as the Romans did.
It almost gives truth to something else
that Mark Twain said. If voting made any
difference, they wouldnt let us do it.
The fact is, this country succeeds in
spite of politics and politicians. The
bus drivers, the school teachers, the
shop clerks, the mailmen and women,
the garage mechanics, and yes, all our
barbers and hair dressers, our heroic
police and fire staffs it is these and
others who make this country work. If
you dont think so, try doing without
them for a couple of months. It is their
hard work, and their ethics that keep
this country great, not all the degrees
from Harvard that live and work in high
places such as Washington D.C. This is
as true today as when Will Rogers said
in his day, This country has gotten where
it is in spite of politics, not by the aid of it."
Remember that when you turn the news
on and you wont feel so depressed.

This summers fires that required evacuations so close to home are a stark
reminder of our vulnerability here in Southern Oregon. With fires still smoldering
into fall and anticipation of winter weather, this is time to check our plans for
evacuation and sheltering in place. Even those of us who are tuned into Disaster
Planning and Preparedness appreciate reminders to check our plans and supplies.
Jacksonvilles most obvious threat is wildfire and the warning of the Cascadia
Earthquake Event looms. Each scenario is unique but being ready for any event
requires being informed, having a plan, communicating, and following through.
Fortunately, there is an abundance of information to help us plan for these
events. Our government has many sources. To find a source that works for you,
look at several. www.jacksoncounty.org/emergency is our local information site.
www.ready.gov/build-a-kit has easy-to-follow advice and checklists. FEMA.gov
is an extensive site to find disaster preparedness information and education.
Redcross.org is another good site. If you do not have Internet access at home,
the Jacksonville Library has computers and librarians to help you find the
information you need. The Jacksonville Fire Department has a good selection of
printed material in their front office to share with you, too. Many of the items
you will need, you already have around your home. A checklist, some thought,
and organizing your supplies is a good start.
If your place of employment or place of worship has disaster preparedness
plan or a team, consider becoming involved. If you want to learn more and to
be able to help your friends and neighbors with confidence, consider training

Coming Home

of spasmodic and fleeting delights, ecstasies, exultations, happinesses, interspersed with
long-drawn miseries, griefs, perils, horrors, disappointments, defeats, humiliations, and
despairsthe heaviest curse devisable by divine ingenuity; but death was sweet, death was
gentle, death was kind; death healed the bruised spirit and the broken heart, and gave them
rest and forgetfulness; death was man's best friend; when man could endure life no longer,

I
tried to condense that long darkish
muse but couldnt decide what to
leave out. Samuel Clemens (Twains
real name) was a humorist and cynic. In
a fallen world, cynicism and reality are
often fraternal twins. Mr. Clemens wasnt
completely wrong, just temporarily
weary from life outside Eden.
An old friend returned to Jacksonville
a short while back. He was a local kid,
grew up here and a reason we were able
to grow in the early years. My friend
knew everyone and everyone him. He'd
bring in friends
and introduce us
around. Back in
the day before
California fools
gold changed the
economics here,
localism was still
very prevalent.
If nobody liked
you it was a
frigid swim
across our little pond. We'll always be
grateful for what he did for us. I dont
recall ever thanking my old friend. Its
never too late for expressing gratitude.
There is something about simple
acknowledgement for good received that
heals the soul. Sometimes the healing is
for those doing the acknowledging.
Our friend has a unique gift. Hes a
fisher of men with abilities to cast deep
into the human heart to catch a mans
attention if just for a moment. Sometimes
it only takes but a moment. A big career
move took him and family up north some
twenty years ago. I saw him the other day
in the coffee house enjoying a breakfast
burrito and a great cup of coffee. Seeing
him gave me pause to remember why we
come home. Whoever said you can't ever
really go home clearly never lived here.
Our friend's mom passed away a
while back. She never left Jacksonville,
remaining here to the end. It's interesting
how the universe shifts upon the passing
of a human life. Mostly the shift is
imperceptible; discernible only to those
closest to the loss but sometimes the
shift is a clarion call. God is intentional
when establishing boundaries in death
to provide vast possibilities for change
in the living. Theres only one caveat
to this principle of grace. The window
of opportunity to respond to such
profound circumcision of heart (a very
descriptive phrase) is brief. The hearts
capacity to quickly callous over again
is equally as
profound.
We've all
experienced
the power of
a passing life,
especially a life
well lived. A son
finally able to
kick a lifelong
destructive habit
after losing a
father, or sibling forgiving a sibling for
seemingly unforgivable trespass. As I
age, occasion to say a final goodbye is
ever increasing. This presents unique
opportunity to see the unseen. As long as
one still takes breath there is still a chance
to change somebodys world.
In our friend's case, his mom's passing
brought him home to stay. The universe
shifted. I guess this small pond is not yet
fished out. Casting seeds of hope here Jacksonville FREE Movie Night
decades ago now affords privilege to see
the fruit in living color. How many of us 7:00 PM at Old City Hall
really consider the wealth in this kind of Friday Oct 20

m back home from a month in Scotland, and ready for fall to
arrive, as are most of us. This smoke and heat have got to go!
After settling back in, I knew Id have a few weeds with
which to contend, and was hoping some of my past articles
about puncturevine had hit home with some. So, this time,
Ill try to reiterate with a few photos how important it is to
control and eradicate this weed whenever its found.
All the information on control methods can be found in past
editions of the Review.
But let me start by asking what you think Jacksonville
would look like if puncturevine were left untreated?
This photo was taken by my son a few years back in Central
Point as we drove home from a days work in Evans Creek.
This is a solid mat of puncturevine almost covering the entire
sidewalk! Can you imagine?
The following photos were taken in Jacksonville 9/4/17.
Prior to setting out for a mornings work, I talked to Rick
Murdoch to see if hed be willing to give me a hand, (which
he always is) as well as show me sites hed treated while I was
gone. Keep in mind, Id treated this corner just before leaving
on vacation, so this plant is only 32 days old!
Thats ONE PLANT, with one central taproot. Rick used
a claw hammer to lever the root out of the ground. Shortly
after, I burned the ripe seeds that had become dislodged
as the plant matured, and there were thousands! Left
untreated, this plant was vulnerable to someone driving
over it, picking up seeds in the tires, and transporting them
elsewhere to start a new colony.
Please, I need help! If you find this plant ANYWHERE, take
a moment to pull it and put it in a garbage can. If you cant
or wont pull it, please call me. Ugh! There have to be more
concerned citizens in this town!

Regulating Marijuana
in Jackson County
T
he approval of Ballot Measure
91 in 2015 to allow the sale and
use of recreational marijuana has
made some dramatic changes to the
landscape of Southern Oregon. The
Countys limited farmland, especially
properties with irrigation rights, has
increased considerably in value and there
is a limited inventory of those properties
currently on the market. This increased
demand for farm properties has come
in large part from the State allowance of
marijuana production
and processing in
Exclusive Farm Use
(EFU) zones.
House Bill 3400,
signed into law
after Measure 91,
authorizes cities and
counties the ability to
impose reasonable
time, place and manner regulations on
recreational and medical marijuana
uses. It also grants cities and counties
the opportunity to prohibit recreational
marijuana producers, processors,
wholesalers, and/or retailers in their
jurisdiction. Although some jurisdictions
have prohibited marijuana uses, Jackson
County has chosen to impose time, place
and manner regulations for all marijuana
uses which include: recreational
and medical production (growing),
processing, wholesaling (for recreational
marijuana only) and retailing or
dispensing which are set forth in Chapter
3.13 of Jackson Countys Land Use
Ordinance. Provided a land use approval
is obtained, this section allows for:
1) Marijuana production in EFU,
Forest, and Industrial zoning districts;
2) Marijuana processing in the EFU and
Industrial zoning districts;
3) Recreational marijuana wholesaling
in the General Commercial and Industrial
zoning districts; and
4) Marijuana Retailing/Medical
Marijuana Facilities in the General
Commercial zoning district.

A Few Suggestions
I
smelled it before I felt it; that acrid,
nasty aroma of burning flesh. I didnt
feel it yet, but I knew the pain was
coming. Dick and I needed to make some
rebar dowels for a concrete job and the
tool closest was a cutting torch. Dick
ran the torch while I held the cutting
template and dunked the dowels in a
water bucket. I dont remember exactly
what distracted me but it was summer in
1971 and it may have had something to
do with a group of girls nearby heading
to the local public pool. Anyway, I sort of
forgot that I didnt have gloves on when
I took hold of the glowing metal rods. As
I grabbed the red hot steel, smelly smoke
seeping from my hands told me Id made
a big mistake. Fortunately, the thick
calluses I had took most of the damage
and the water doused my burning skin.
My hands healed up fine but I never
outlived the embarrassment. Every once
in a while, when I was picking something
up, Dick would quietly ask, Hot?

Oriental Lilies:
Not As Fragile As You Think

Fresh tears stood on her cheeks as does the honeydew upon a gathered Lily almost withered.

his passage makes it clear that
Shakespeare had closely observed
and appreciated the beauty of
morning dew on the petals of a lily, and
he also knew that the flowers freshness
does not last long. The romantic
symbolism of the lily that Shakespeare
develops during this scene of Titus
Andronicus is intentionally, and
shockingly, in contrast to the plays gory
theme; still, the passage represents how
Shakespeare often used the silky-smooth,
pure white petals of a lily (Lilium) to
symbolize female beauty and elegance, as
well as sweetness, innocence and purity.
In our 21st century gardens, lilies are
not as fragile and difficult to grow as
one might think. Indeed, with their large
silky-smooth petals and deep fragrance,
Oriental lilies, in particular, are beautiful
additions to gardens that provide the
right cultural conditions.
Lilies prefer their heads in the sun
and their feet in the shade, so the
ideal position in the garden is where
they will receive morning sunshine,
protection from wind, and shade from
late-afternoon heat. Keep in mind that
some lilies, like Oriental lilies, will grow
4-5 feet tall. Surround them with shorter
plants to provide shade for the lower
foliage of the lily; this help prevents the
bulb from drying out.
Lilies do best in well-draining soils
enriched with compost. They prefer
neutral to slightly alkaline soils (pH 7.0-
7.5); neutralize acidic soils with lime.
If youre starting out new, Oriental lily
bulbs are shipped in the fall. Then the
bulbs can either be planted immediately
in the garden, or stored in a dry unheated
location until early spring. Deer and
ground squirrels love lily bulbs, so
you may need to plant your bulbs in
containers rather than in the ground.
Plant lily bulbs in sets of three to five
bulbs in individual holes, 6 inches deep
and 8 inches apart. Mix 1 T. of bone
meal into the soil at the bottom of each
planting hole; the high potassium
content of bone meal supports a
healthy root system. Place one Oriental
lily bulb, scales pointy side up, in
the bottom of each hole, and then fill
the hole with a mixture of soil and
compost. Water thoroughly, and mulch
with shredded leaves or dried grass
clippings. Bulbs should be kept moist
but not wet year-round.
The bulb will send up a basal crown
of green foliage in the winter. Keep
the foliage cut back to help prevent the
development of fungal diseases that
overwinter in the greenery.
Early next spring, add a low-nitrogen,
high-phosphorous fertilizer to boost the
plants energy for blooming during the
summer. Oriental lilies will bloom in
mid to late summer after Asiatic lilies
have faded. Healthy lilies will grow
several flowers on each stalk, so remove
spent flowers.
Next fall, you can dig up your
Oriental lily bulbs and increase the
number of plants in your garden by
dividing the bulblets or propagating
the scales. (Check out my blog for how
to propagate lilies.) In fact, lily bulbs
should be replaced every three or four
years. Once you have enough lily bulbs
for yourself, share them with friends so
they will be able to grow lilies, too!
Those of us who admire lilies can
consider ourselves in good company.
Shakespeare appeared to like lilies a lot
as he mentioned them 28 times in his
plays and poetry, more than any other
flower except the rose.

At last Ross was able to assume the
role of solid citizen. He was chosen
to represent Jackson County in the
Territorial Council in 1855-56, served
as a member of the State House in
1860, and was elected a member of the
State Senate in 1866. When the Oregon
& California Railroad Company was
formed, Ross was elected a director.
Elizabeth meanwhile occupied herself
with the couples 10 children.
Ross was called to his final military
action in 1872. When settlers realized
the value of Modoc Indian land, the
Modocs were subjected to the same
treatment as the Rogue Indians.
The Modocs chose to make a final
bloody rebellion. Ross was named a
Brigadier General of the Oregon militia,
serving briskly and efficiently, but
younger officers treated him more as a
figurehead. At the end of the war, when
told to select the guilty Indians and
take them to Jacksonville for trial, he
refused. There had been enough killing.
Ross served one more term as state
senator during which he chaired the
military committee. In 1882, he retired
to his farm on Ross Lane, having served
the Oregon Territory and State for
almost 50 years. Ross died eight years
later, his mind clouded by dementia.

all is the best time to plant trees,
shrubs & perennials. Take a look

time to plant because it allows the roots

W F
atching a monarch
metamorphosis is mind-
blowing. Work deadlines,
family time, and personal care all take
a temporary backseat to what I view as
a mesmerizing marvel. The fact that a
single egg, only slightly larger than the
period at the end of this sentence, in four
days, turns into the tiniest milkweed-
munching caterpillar imperceptible to
the average eye, and then molts five
times, growing 30 times her original
size in 14 days, is already astonishing.
But the wonder doesnt stop there. A
brilliantly striped, plump caterpillar
attaches, upside-down to a fixed object,
forms a J-shape, then contracts, twists,
and writhes into a dazzling green
chrysalis with glistening gold dots, which
then, over the next 10 days, turns black
revealing orange wings. The butterfly
ecloses (emerges) from the chrysalis
shell like an acrobat swinging down
from a wire, desperately holding on. She
hangs there stitching her split proboscis
together, while her soggy wings harden.
Ive witnessed, dozens of times, the
metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to
chrysalis to adult butterfly, and I am still
unable to turn away. Its zentertaining
awe-incapacitation.
When I really think about itthe

Monarchs are gravely declining due
to the loss of native milkweedan

is a burgeoning grassroots movement
of citizen scientists planting monarch
waystations (gardens with milkweed and
forage flowers) and rearing monarchs
indoors. I believe this movement will
help save the monarch.

The great migration begins early fall
when the Western monarchs journey to
their overwintering sites along the central
or southern coast of California, and the
Eastern monarchs brave a difficult flight
to their overwintering sites in the Oyamel
Fir forests of central Mexico traveling
roughly 3000 miles. The monarchs that
leave Oregon now are considered the
super generation. Whereas as most
monarch butterflies live 2-6 weeks, the
super generation will live up to nine
months spending most of that time in
a state of torpor using only minimal fat
reserves at their overwintering sites.
Around Valentines day, they start
looking for love (okay, not love), and
by March or April the female begins the
journey north spending her final days
searching for milkweed upon which to
lay her eggs. The mysterious migration
north continues with each subsequent
generation arriving to a place theyve
never before been but from where their
ancestors came.
To date, Ive released more than
twenty monarch butterflies raised
indoors. Releasing each one brings about
both trepidation and joy, much like a
concerned mother sending her child out
to make her mark on the world. As they
fly from my fingers, I bid them farewell, a

Big Plans Need Helping Hands
irst off, the Friends of the
Arboretum would like to extend
many thanks to the individuals who
took the initiative this summer to take on
maintenance projects at the CC Beekman
Arboretum. With the heat, smoke, and
busy summer schedules, the organization
of formal clean-up days took a break.
The Friends of the Arboretum, and its
visitors, greatly appreciate your efforts
trimming trees, sweeping bridges, weed-
whacking, working on irrigation, and the
other countless tasks that make the CC
Beekman Arboretum a destination.
This fall, the Friends of the Arboretum
is excited to share the upcoming projects
that will further enhance the CC
Beekman Arboretum. They include:
1. Arboretum Shelter ProjectAfter
much discussion within the community,
there is a general consensus that a covered
picnic area in the Arboretum would
further enhance the space. Community
member Tony Hess has been working
closely with our co-chairs Kandee
McClain and Becka Kem, and the City of
Jacksonville, in the development of the
project. The 12x16 shelter will resemble
the shelter at the Doc Griffin Park in style
and structure, just smaller in stature. The
new shelter will have a concrete floor and
room for two picnic tables and perimeter
upcoming projects, we need volunteers!
parking area up behind the waterfall.
Construction is expected to begin this fall
after approval by the city. The Friends
of the Arboretum is looking forward to
community use of the space by school
groups, hiking groups, and picnickers.

ur friends,
the trails.
We
can see them
romanticallyfantastically leading us
away on adventures. Or consider them
purely utilitariana way to get from
point A to point B. Sometimes, we find
them a challenge to be conquered. And
yet there they are: paths leading away, to
be followed if we are so inclined, ignored
if not, maybe saved for another day. Just
a few inches of cleared tread, going there.
We trail folks would prefer our trails
to be unencumbered by brush and trees.
We enjoy a smooth path not littered with
loose rocks and branches. Its important
that trails go somewhere, yet we also like
to loop around when possible, to see new
things as we travel, instead of simply
heading out-and-back.
We are not fond of folks who abuse
trail integrity by cow-pathing, (creating
unauthorized trails) often to cut across
switchbacks. Nor are we amused by
inconsiderate folks whose vices spoil
our otherwise enjoyable walks through
nature, be it cigarette butts, beverage
cans, candy wrappers, or what have you.
We shouldn't expect to encounter bicycles
on hiking trails any more than wed
expect ATVs or dirt bikes on bicycle trails
or snow machines on ski trails.
Good trail etiquette asks that we be
respectful of others as well as respectful
of the trails we use. Much work and care
goes into trail maintenance and upkeep,
often done by volunteers. As trail folks, we
should endeavor to help keep our trails
friendlythat loose rock that fell onto the
path? Roll it aside. That tree branch that
fell in last nights storm? Set it aside. That
wrapper left by a litterbug? Pick it up.
Boosters bi-annual Home Tour to be held
in May 2018. With this exciting honor,
comes preparation. The Friends of the
Arboretum will be holding several work
days this fall, and again this spring to get
the area ready for visitors. This will include
planting of trees, spreading bark, weeding,
moving gravel, and the construction of the
pollinators garden (see below).
3. CC Beekman Arboretum Pollinator
GardenBees seem to be getting a lot
of buzz lately. Bees pollinate a third of
everything we eat and play a vital role
in sustaining the planets ecosystems.
With the dwindling population of
bees, this puts our food supply at risk.
It also puts the food supply for native
animals at risk. With the goal of the
Friends of the Arboretum being to
enhance the CC Beekman Arboretum
as a natural park and destination for
hikers, plant enthusiasts, school groups
and tourists, we feel a pollinator garden
is complimentary. We are working with
Kenda Swartz of Bee City and Kristina
Lefever of Pollinator Project Rogue Valley
to get this project underway. We are still
in the planning phase of this project.

4. Work DaysWith all of these

We Trail Folks
Our responsibility is to use our
trails wisely. Common sense tells us
not to attempt a challenging trail or a
lengthy trail if were not up to it. We
should travel prepared for unseen
circumstances. Things happen in the
natural world that we dont control.
It may be a flash flood from a sudden
storm that washes out part of our path.
It may be a yellow jacket nest that turns
us around, or a wild animal that makes
us uncomfortable. A skunk on your
path wont yield the right-of-way and
arguing the point is futile.
Those who choose to bring bicycles
onto trails have additional responsibilities.
Besides keeping themselves safe, they are
also to yield to other trail folks. If their
skill level is inadequate to safely maintain
a route of travel that protects the trails
integrity, they should find easier trails to
use. As in golf, those who come behind
are not anxious to replace the divots of
careless usage.
Sustainable trails do not happen by
accident. Careless and uncaring trail
renegades damage tread, creating
washouts, landslides, and other erosive
features. Misuse of trails leads to closed
or unmaintained trails. One rotten tomato
spoils the whole batch. Lets discard that
rotten tomato.
With fall upon us, trails will soon
soften. Puddles will form. Dust will
disappear. And our feet will point
forward again, making tracks. Use
care, going there with a gracious heart,
wherever your trail may lead.

each lap around the track and compete
for prizes for the most laps run, most

Shooting Star to Host Annual Apple Festival
Shooting Star Nursery focuses on the
health of the microclimate that is the Rogue
Valley. The well-educated team knows

They also produced a line of colored
cut crystal stemware that is stunning.
Murano, Italy, a Venetian island, has
been making glass since 1291. I think that
they have their craft well-honed. There
are two examples of Vintage custom-
made Murano stemware on my shelf.
They are both tall and decorated with
purple grapes and crystal leaves. One is a
wine glass and one is a martini glass.
The French are famous for Baccarat
crystal that was so vibrant that kings
and emperors around the world
commissioned glassware for their castles
and estates. We do have a few pieces of
this stunning glassware from time to time.
These companies produced stemware
not only for wine, champagne, cordials
and whiskey, but for water, iced tea and
sherbet. So, even if you do not drink
wine, there is no reason to not enjoy the
beauty and quality stemware.
Clink a glass of sparkling cider with
your family, serve the milk or juice in
something elegant and let the family
enjoy the feel and beauty of quality
glassware. With that comes the teaching
of gentle hand washing and drying so
water spots dont ruin the crystal.

history in a way that allows us to learn of
ourselves, others, and the wisdom of life.
After all, hindsight is 20/20.

f you are one of those lucky people
who knew who you were and what
you wanted to do from the time you
were seven years old, this column is not
for you. Furthermore, I dont ever want
to talk to you and please dont write
me. If, on the other hand, you have been
searching for your purpose and calling
all your life, or you have a good idea of
what you really love but have not yet
fully embraced it for
whatever reasons, read
on. You are my tribe.
I have been searching
for what I lovein the
form of a careerfor a
really, really long time.
To be clear, I know
that a calling does not
necessarily become a
career, and a career is certainly not always
a calling, but I have always yearned for a
true vocation: a spiritual calling to a work.
Motherhood provided a partial answer,
but it wasnt the whole enchilada.
Three decades ago, a degree from
a prestigious university in hand and
absolutely lost, I visited a career
counselor. She handed me a sheaf of
personality and aptitude assessments
which I dutifully filled out. Two weeks
later I sat in the shabby, dimly lit,
windowless office, ready to find my
future. The counselor sat silently behind
her littered desk, looking over my tests. I
waited expectantly, excitedly anticipating
the brilliant career path that lay on the
pages in front of me. The counselor
peered at me over her glasses.
You were raised to be retired, she
pronounced.
I sat, silent, waiting for more: There
was no more. Apparently, I had no
aptitude for anything. Remarkably, not a
single indicator had emerged from all the
possibilities. Nothing.
That was a long time ago, and although
I became a paralegal for some years
after that rather unhelpful revelation,
earned a graduate degree and became a
counselorwhich provided an identity,
an income and a worthy serviceit still
wasnt quite it. For years Ive tried to pick
up and follow the thread of whatever it
might be, following the tell-tale signs of
excitement, pleasure and engagement
that indicate the presence of passion. This
isnt always as simple as it might sound.
Our calling is always, well, calling, but
too often we dont answer. And I will tell
you why:
FEAR.
Most of us, consciously or not, lug

entrenched fears, beliefs and judgments
about what is acceptable, possible and
necessary.

this as being slow-verwhelmed.
When you are caring for someone, (a loved one with a
chronic illness, an elderly parent or spouse) and you are

Family caregivers have a tendency to give up their
own activities and interests in order to care for others.
When you focus too much on your caregiving role,
the rest of your life suffers. And when your social life
is gone, interest in hobbies tends to dwindle, you are
less physically active and leisure time decreases, or just
feels less leisure-like.
Combating Lethargy with Leisure You need to
make regular time for things that bring you pleasure,
whether its reading, working in the garden, tinkering
in your workshop, making art or crafts, enjoy cooking
new recipes, working on your Spanish, playing with
the dogs, or dates with the grandkids. Whether its a
bit of alone time or socially with others, leisure time
has a positive effect on mood and self-esteem and
decreases stress and loneliness. Introducing leisure
time back into your life will benefit you and the
person you are caring for, as you will be more rested
and less resentful of what you have had to give up.
Even a 30-minute or one-hour break a few times a
week will help replenish your energy and will help
you reconnect with others.
A tip for enjoying your newly-implemented leisure-
time: take a break from thinking about the person you
provide care for. For this time to be restorative, you
need to be able to let go of worrying and release yourself
to your own enjoyment. True, others may not provide
care exactly as you would, but your family member will
be cared for and their time off from you will be enriched
by interactions with new people. So, enjoy your time off
and come home refreshed!

great way to get out, share your troubles and find
people who are going through similar experiences.
And if you can't leave your house, there are also plenty
of online support groups.

ello there! I Its been ages since I
put paw/pen to paper, and Ive
heard my readers have missed me!
To catch-you upnot much has
changed. The smoke has hampered my
walks, for sure, but I still bop around my
large yard and roll-around in whatever
gross thing might be available (turkey
poop, moldy grass, rotten tomatoes).
The birds continue to be the bane of my
existence, and I always bark and chase
themeven if theyre flying high in the
skywho knows what theyre up-to
way up there?
Yesterday morning I got a bit of a
scareI was on my important, morning
patrol of the yard borders, when I spotted
two small, black bears next door! Right
therenext to the fence, hanging-out as
calmly as you please! I raced back-and-
forth and barked-up a storm to let my
folks know about the nervy intruders. It
was rather embarrassing to discover they
were actually decorative statues placed
there by our new neighbors. Oops.
Im also still the Un-Golden: I dont
like swimming, wont retrieve balls, hate
to be brushed, am not really a huge fan
of walks. I DO like my teeth brushed,
though, and I insist on bringing slippers,
socks, underwear (used preferred),
pinecones, or whatever I can find, to
greet you when you visit my home.
And yes, Im getting older. My 9th
birthday just passed, and Im feeling
my age a littlegetting gray around my
muzzle, and carrying few extra pounds.
My folks are trying to slim me down, but
how can you resist this darling face when
its begging for treats?!
The other thing that hasnt changed is
Im still sharing my home with the C.A.T.
(Cute Action Toy). Except, hes not so
cute anymore and he certainly refuses
to be my toycats are weird, I tell you.
He likes to swipe at me when I go by
because, of course, hes allowed to get up
on the furniture
Well, I hope this hot, smoky weather
hasnt hampered your summer, and that
youre enjoying life in our Small Town

hosting them at wineries is a somewhat new idea. Prior
to closing their tasting room this year, Trium Winery
in Talent was one of the very first to offer on-site yoga
classes. For Ashland-area yoga enthusiasts, Belle Fiore
Winery has planned yoga events this fall and is hoping
they become regular monthly events as is the case at
DANCIN. Also new this fall, Grable will be hosting
one-day mindfulness yoga retreats at EdenVale Winery
starting in late September.
With options for single sessions or full-day retreats,
and beginner to expert level yoga, Southern Oregon
offers it all. Grable says, I love that yoga at wineries
attracts a blend of seasoned yoga practitioners along
with students who have never practiced. Some regularly
attend monthly sessions while others come as an
occasional treat. In the past, there have been couples
that meet their friends at the events, women who come
from nearby towns for a day out with friends, and even
parents who bring their teenagers, who enjoy a non-
alcoholic beverage!
Having completed her yoga class at DANCIN,
Townsley sips her wine and reflects, Practicing yoga
together with others provides a sense of community,
connection and play. That fun, communal spirit just
naturally carries over when sitting down together for
a wine tasting. The whole experience becomes a social
event full of good conversation with old and new
friends in the most perfect spot imaginable!

2017 Oregon Wine Experience
a Super-Success!
Jacksonville can be proud of the fact
that the Oregon Wine Experience,
held each August on the Bigham Knoll
Campus, shattered all previous records
for fundraising this year! The record-
breaking results for the Oregon Wine
Experience, including more than $1
million raised for childrens healthcare,
show it to be one of the top wine and
culinary events in the country.
This year, there were 103 participating
wineries that entered 351 wines. A record
$1,024,525 was raised in 2017, bringing
the total to over $2.5 million raised in the
first four years since the event was taken
over by the Asante Foundation.
Another milestone reached includes
105 sponsors contributing $524,000, and
generous bidders, donors, and raffles
contributing more than $430,000. All
proceeds directly benefit Childrens

IN THE SOUTHERN OREGON WINE SCENE, innkeepers and hoteliers often play
a significant role helping their guests navigate wine country.
Perched at the Applegate Valley Wine Trails threshold, Jacksonville bed and breakfast
owners revel in their responsibility to promote the wine appellation just west of their town.
We live here; we are passionate about the area, says Karolina Wyszynska
Lavagnino, director of sales and marketing for Neuman Hotel Group. Its an authentic
love for the region.
Southern Oregons authenticity, says Jamie Kerr, lures no small number of wine
enthusiasts away from Californias Napa and Sonoma valleys in search of hidden
gems. Southern Oregon, adds Lavagnino, is poised to outshine better-known wine
regions that have become commercialized. And Southern Oregons unspoiled wine
country, both say, delivers plenty of new discoveries.
Most people express surprise at how much variety there is, says Kerr, who operates
Jacksonvilles TouVelle House Bed & Breakfast.
Variety doesnt just describe the grapes grown in Southern Oregon. From luxuriously-
appointed estates to rustic ranches, wineries offer a setting and ambiance for any taste. Kerr
and boutique hotel owner Cherie Reneau both laud DANCIN Vineyards for its breathtaking
views just a stones throw from downtown Jacksonville. Industry publications recently
singled-out the winery as the best, not only in Southern Oregon, but the entire state.
People can go there and just chill for an hour or two, says Reneau, who co-owns
Jacksonvilles Elan Guest Suites & Art Gallery.
DANCINs gourmet pizzas, salads and antipasti encourage visitors to linger longer,
say Kerr and Reneau. Widening their culinary appeal, more and more wineries,
including Wooldridge Creek Vineyard & Winery and Schmidt Family Vineyards in
the Applegate, serve house-made cheese, charcuterie, sandwiches and burgers. Winery
atmospheres run the gamut, from Wooldridge Creeks sustainable design features
with its recycled steel trusses and reclaimed wood to Schmidt Familys lush gardens
and expansive lawns to Red Lily Vineyards peerless riverfront appointment.
You could spend weeks and still not cover all of it there are so many now, says
Reneau. In that 20-mile corridor, there are as many vineyards and wineries, she says
of Highway 238, the primary driving route through the Applegate. And thats only a
portion of the other wineries that we recommend to guestsfrom Ashland, Medford
and into to the Upper Rogue areas, Kerr says.

Maps in Southern Oregon Wine Scene, along with its detailed winery profiles, often
are inkeepers go-to reference guide for guests. Kerr says the publication essentially
comprises several dozen brochures within its pages.
Its really easy for people to take along with them.
Once guests find their bearings around the wine region, Kerr usually poses three
questions: What have they heard about the area? What kinds of wines interest
them? Have they previously tasted anything from the region? Reneau says she
calls to confirm wineries hours of operations, or encourages guests to check before
embarking on a tasting tour.
Most innkeepers work as a concierge, says Linda Kilcollins, a former bed-and-
breakfast owner in Redding, California, whos stayed several times at TouVelle House
to taste wine and attend the Southern Oregon Lavender Festival. Kilcollins credits Kerr
with steering her toward Valley View Winery and Red Lily Vineyards, both of which
produce tempranillo, her favorite varietal.
For guests whose journeys may take them from the Redwoods to Crater Lake, Kerr
says she recommends wine in either direction. Options have become more numerous
over the years and ballooned in the past five, says Reneau.
Huge progress! agrees Lavagnino. You have a winery on every corner, including
urban wineries.
Increased visibility for wineries also arises at gala events, such as Oregon Wine
Experience, a weeklong education, appreciation and fundraising effort each August
in Jacksonville. Kerr touts exposure that comes with international journalists and
travel writers popping into town. Working as volunteer event staff, Neuman
Hotel Group employees gain more knowledge of the local wine industry, says
Lavagnino, whose company plans to reopen Jacksonvilles historic Nunan Estate in
spring or summer 2018. Field trips, she says, acquaint the hotel groups staff with
whats in our backyard.
That intimate knowledge of the wine scene confers hoteliers and innkeepers
with status as wine stewards, tour organizers and even managers of their own on-
site wine tastings. Its a level of service that entices guests like Kilcollins to small,
locally-owned accommodations.
Whether its food or wine, they play a big part.
